SLC/UTAH
Seems the world's one big massive Instagram/Pinterest/selfie stage…with smartphones, point+shoot/DSLRs and GoPro cameras as commonly used on a daily basis as a toothbrush these days.
Actually...more.
At the Outdoor Retailer F/W 2014 tradeshow- adventure/everyday luggage specialists as well as those names more commonly acclaimed for their backpacks or bike racks-all showed new protective haulers for those carrying an image snapper (or two).
Details like weather tough, abrasion resistant fabrics, side access DSLR padded compartments-that can be removed and put in a hotel safe, organization pockets/ padded laptop sleeves pocket options…and customizable padded dividers…are multi-tasking features.
FYI-hard case rolling camera bags---like the ones from Pelican---that seem to be the equipment container of choice for all the professional photographers we know that travel and shoot the fashion shows…is a kinda different demographic. What we saw would be more urban friendly-and for the traveller who likes to take pictures…not the hard core pro with five cameras and ten lenses and three ever-ready assistants in tow.
What's New
From Thule-a company that is a master at churning out more ways to haul our stuff-so urban chic-our luggage dresses way better than we do.
Their new urban targeted Thule Covert Line looks smart…with nifty features like removable camera pods, interchangeable divider systems...
The New Covert DSLR Messenger $149.95
we were completely taken with this Covert DSLR Rolltop Backpack $199.95. Like the above-room for a prosumer camera and wide angle lens, a 15" laptop/notebook
...there's a SafeZone removable camera pod system with a dual density padded bottom,
-an origami like divider system that folds around all size of equipment for fit and protection, more customizable storage for 2 lenses and a flash, spacious roll top divider for personal stuff…plus that can zip out for one roomy compartmental purposes.
Smaller sizes too- Covert CSC Sling-good for compact camera-up to four lenses/flash-with a cross-body sling with reversible left/right carry- or lumbar pack carrying option $99.95- and Covert DSLR satchel-a 2-1 with SafeZone removable photo gear protection $124.95.
THULE : ETA August 2014.
EAGLE CREEK's Pack-It™Protect-It™ system of durable/functional padded zipped cubes, lined with fleece--are so practical and had us systematically thinking we need to re-think the way we just shove our electronics in our take-on bag and pray we're not snagged as we try to board an airplane.
From Mountainsmith-and available now-a series of "camera carry solutions" from $29.95- $269.95 for hardcore, multi-accessable Parallax backpack with room for 3 DSLR cameras, lenses, flash, tripode, laptop etc. Lots of hauling capacity…made possible with YKK® zippers, bar tack reinforcements and serious 500d S-Kodra High Tenacity Nylon with 210d Liner and cushioning Atilon foam-load adjustable carrying features--like the ones we see on hard core backpacks. Impressive.
From the Kickstarter world of just do it-Snow Lizard is quite the success story. We admired there entrepreneurial drive-(3 campaigns-all successful)…and their camera protective offerings, available now.
Hard core fabulous-with a solar panel charger SO SMART. We expect these to be carried all over when they start ramping up production.
IMO-what our nieces really need when in Africa and South America…not those blingy covers that protect against nada. After all, they can BeDazzle them for some sparkle.
