Woolrich Footwear Debut F/W 2014-by Portland Product Werks

Not too many MLB players have hit 2 grand slams in a game, let alone from both sides of the plate (that would be one, exactly)----and that batting accomplishment hit us as an apt metaphor- when previewing the staggeringly fabulous WOOLRICH footwear collection by licensee Portland Product Werks (PPW).

         And it wasn't just us all abuzz---we ran into shoe reps at another tradeshow a few weeks later- who were also mightily impressed.

 Woolrich has been around since 1830 (Woolrich, PA)---and as "The Original Clothing Company" has had several iterations---including apparel collections aimed at the high end (John Rich&Bros.)….and the outdoorsy-travel customers, under the umbrella of the more accessibly priced Woolrich Woolen Mills-PLUS  home furnishings, and OF COURSE- made in the USA wool fabric.

WITH 'iconic' and 'heritage' already in the mix, the company is more focused now (IMO)--- and smartly launched the Woolrich footwear - deftly featuring those aforementioned ingredients -somewhere in each pair.

PLUS the 100% woven in the USA wool - the flagship Buffalo check, heritage plaid and tweeds, timeless stripes, and solids…are used in styles that wearers can wear in several environments…casual play time, and dressy work time…and 3 seasons worthy too with stats like water/stain resistant finishes,  treaded durable/grippy rubber Vibram outsoles, Talon zippers (founded in 1893), felt flex midsoles for comfort/support, EVA cushioning footbeds with shock absorbing PU in the heels…and odor absorbing, naturally moisture wicking, thermo insulating genuine Woolrich wool linings.

We were not familiar with licensee PPW----but led by CEO Sean Beers and Creative Director Carl Blakeslee---these seasoned shoe industry veterans (Nike, Sorel, Columbia Sportswear, Korkers) certainly took a très chic fashion forward turn when conjuring up this amazing debut collection…balancing function+comfort= on trend style--- with the brand's legacy, flawlessly.

PLUS: A premium collection of men's shoes---made in the USA constructed---featuring high end domestic Horween  leathers (Chicago based), and handcrafted details like Goodyear welt construction (tell by looking at them-and resoleable being a character trait, fyi-nice)… priced $300-$350, which is very reasonable.

PS: The only bummer for us was that the women's samples were all in a size 6. Maybe our cat wears that…and the PR rep. No worries though, we expect WOOLICH footwear to be picked up by all the usual suspects of retailers …for men thinks where labels like Frye, Walkover, Wolverine 1883, Red Wing are sold.
