FYI: The Swedish Flag

A super cool store on 262 Mott Street in the LES/NYC---got us motivated to make time at OR to see the 50 years old Swedish label, FJÅLLRÅVEN...entire collection for next season.

For the clueless...we were...the history of the brand began with a 14 year old -Åke Nordin---crafting his own carry-all (KANKEN) for hikes except his boasted an aluminum frame that allowed for better support. Inspiration ignited....and ten years after in 1960---the first iconic backpacks and comfortable/functionable outerwear under the Fjållråven moniker, debuted.

Now---the label is available around the globe---at hip boutiques (Opening Ceremony) and serious outdoor/camping stores.

This year, in addition to the vintage flavored backpacks-with shoulder straps, handles, two open side pockets, a zipped main compartment, a front zipped pocket, and a removable foam pad---for laptops and to sit on --- all in hoppin' colors. ($65+)

Made of Vinylon F fabric---a special nylon made in Japan and exclusive to Fjållråven...that's made to last.

There is some terrific outerwear including our favorite item---the Luhkka Cape (also available in red and black)-----a piece inspired by the classic design worn by the indigenous Sami people that dwell above the Artic circle.

The outdoor ready G-1000 material is prominent throughout the collection...

A durable blend of cotton and polyester----its 2x tougher than denim-so we were told-and even highly water resistant when waxed

The classic Expedition Jacket---intro-ed in a 1974 Himalayan Expedition----has two layers of down to trap heat...
O-VIK JACKET

A more compact vision of this---the Ovik jacket ($599)-pictured above----also down and with  G-1000.

SLED PULLOVER PARKA

The VED jacket----insulated with velcro and zip closures, lots of pockets---and the women's Vilt jacket (longer, belted) made with the G-1000 material.

PLUS:

Apparel---men's and women's....

Nice thick lambswool scarves ($79), hats, beanies...
