West 15th Street, NYC

New York Fashion Week

Yara Flinn’s status as an emerging designer is old…as we thought the quasi runway/presentation we saw was polished, well edited---and a continuation of the label’s signature MO…

all characteristics of a seasoned pro.

Fitted, artful silhouettes, strategic sexy cutouts that seem architecturally inspired, not voyeuristic, and solid black, white and cobalt blue palette of the hip looking, mostly dresses…

All really draped, seamed and pleated to perfection.

We liked the asymmetrical frocks, a zip-front scuba dress, and the feminine tie front skirt and shirt dress---the latter in a blue that reminds us of Yves Klein claim to tonal fame.

This is the label for modern gals, sleek attire in chiffon, crepe, mesh and waxed cotton. We were happy to see the venue packed with the spill-over crowd from practically next door Milk Studios…that had a bunch of shows/presentations that night with a similar edgy vibe.

FYI: NOMIA is a Greek Nymph

When we enter the Wenger (“Maker of the Genuine Swiss Army Knife”) exhibit space that’s always front and center at the Salt Palace Convention Center…we feel like we enter guyville... as our focus is on the men’s kickers---a good looking line-up of shoes divided into sub groups.

New for us are the nautically natty Marine collection…a result of Wenger’s partnership with "The Alinghi”---a Swiss sailing team. The Windward ($50) a casual canvas upper lace-up,

Clipper ($80) and Catamaran ($85) slip-ons---all with grippy rubber outsoles,

and the Alinghi-a handsome leather mesh upper with 3M Scotchguard and a Vibram outsole. ($125).

Bumped up thongs in leather ($50-$60)—one style--- Poif Pilf ---(flip flops spelled backwards) part of the Basecamp line.

As is the desert boot style Midway with a crepe sole ($100).

Value wise, Wenger offers a lot for those wanting more of a technical shoe—with style.

AT the high end, the Bomber ($400) is a highly technical shoe for the extreme conditions…with Primaloft Insulation and Nubuck leather, Outdry Extreme Waterproofing, Rubber randing, and Vibram soles.

The San Rocco, and a carry over, Diavolo ($360) are made of primo Anfibio Leather from Italy, with waterproofing, and tough Vibram outsoles…and with the Purchase ($140) made with breathable mesh and suede---are all good for challenging day hikes as well as overnights off the beaten trail.

The Xpedition ($110) with Nubuck/Ripstop Nylon is a hybrid kicker--- part of the Trail group with OutDry Extreme Waterproofing and outsoles that grab.

The Ablion comes in a high and low ($90, $85) versions of suede and breathable mesh with waterproofing that can go from trail to street with ease…given the trend for more technical shoes for everyday

We thought of trail runners with the Cirque ($75) and Appalachian ($60)…have the looks of the best lifestyle sneakers but a lot more durable.

A refreshed watch that captures the military look par excellence---- is this slick black matte AeroGraph Cockpit---an aviation themed time keeper in a PVD case, with a NATO green dial and silicon strap = rugged good looks. ($300)

Also new is the highly functional, cutting edge, tech-wise Nomad Compass Watch--- ($375) that features a specialized Swiss movement and a seamless LED digital day, date, time and compass display module.

And although we don’t cover knives per se, we liked the eco story of the EvoWood premium knives…made from recycled Swiss walnut wood handles and Wenger’s signature premium blades and tools. Each one is unique.

Deliveries for Spring 2011 Merchandise start January/February 2011…

Tremor--with Outdry Extreme Waterproofing, Hypergrip/EVA Outsoles, Full Grain Leather or Suede Uppers ($110)

Prana (ancient Sanskrit for breath, life and vitality of the spirit) has evolved “steadily and naturally” from its very humble beginning based in its founders’ garage…to morphed into one of the larger brands we cover in the performance/lifestyle wear world.

We had some familiarity with the brand, as it's DNA is in the climbing world. Along the way, it has emerged with a  “present” mantra subplot…with clothes “aware of every move you make

For travel, everyday, yoga and other activities. Spring/Summer 2011 takes a turn through Barcelona with the bright color pops throughout the collection for gals.

The lifestyle line-up has the stylish fabrics (burnouts) and details with unique patterns and prints, saturated colors, and sublimation artwork techniques that bump up the tees and dresses from the basics to pretty.

For tops we favored this Elina Halter (pic above) with ribbon trim, and multi-colored smocking at hem.

The Soul T is made form 100% organic Cotton Africa---- and is a Fair Trade Certified™ T-Shirt that is made by the Liberian Women’s Sewing Project that gives thousands of women a chance to make a living.

The cute Gigi is a retro style---made of a cotton silk India blend.

And this breezy printed Jaselle Top with feminine butterfly sleeves with underarm slits and pom pom ribbon details along the sleeve and bottom hemline…is as appropriate on the beach as on a street anywhere.

The print is terrific.

Also available, cargo skirts, hoodies, cordless self-drawstring shorts, capris, jeans and comfy knickers made form French terry and organic cotton /spandex blends.

The Mahida Collection is focused on easy knit dressing and layering, composed of organic cottons and recycled fabric contents.

Feminine silhouettes in Capri leggings, Harem knickers, and the wearable, elegant lightweight fabric of the Malia Capri with a flattering mock wrap overlay that ties at the center.

Other tops have internal shelf bras for low impact ---with criss-cross back straps (Leyla), tonal sublimation prints in the front in back on a stretchy tank (Marisol Top) and a racerback (Abi Top)--- a step above typical workout wear with unique prints and graphics.

A Sophia Bra top, good on its own or under un-buttoned button-ups. Practical and sexy.

What Else: A Performance line that’s made with a new Veeda fabric that breathes, drapes well, and stretches---plus provides enough support for moderate pursuits. We loved the retro floral prints too.
