WALTER Baker showed a smart, urban and fun collection for gals atop the Empire Hotel...a nice setting, for any Spring 2012 Presentation.

There was a lot to like-the city suits-paired with hip length jackets that will work with jeans, long sheer dresses paired with short, form fitting leather jackets and vest (versatile items too), cropped pants-...

In a winning palette of the basics, bold color blocks...and prints including a pretty abstract camel one.

Uptown polish for the city girl with a downtown sensibility---sophisticated and modern pieces-all really well made---construction is top quality---and we got up close to see it all too.

Nice Touch: Separates named after women----

We barely got to any seat in time for the Zang Toi runway show---and put ourselves on the first spot we saw free-seconds before the show began.

And it was clear to us-we were amongst a row of very happy (and well-dressed, of course) Zang Toi customers-up in the Big Apple from Texas-to our left-and Connecticut -to our right.

Uptown Girls of a certain age -and financial means, we thought-who has no idea where "downtown" is-driven around the city via town car or limo---of course, who wants only discreet luxury and elegant modern not trendy clothing, most likely fussed over by the well-liked Zang Toi himself-at a Nordstrom Couture trunk show.

It just reminded us that there are several high end fashion designers who get so little editorial print acknowledgement-but just know their customer-and her wardrobe needs-and designs accordingly.

The female models walked the runway-as if all regal Queens-in a polished parade of perfectly fitted dresses, gowns, and finely tailored pants suits-in the finest fabrics (Loro Piana Cashmere, Italian Dupioni Silks...)....in a palette that reminded us of an exotic North African desert locale as twilight sets.

We thought it was lovely-and perhaps more importantly-the ladies surrounding us were simply gushing with enthusiasm!

CARLOS MIELE is one of those talented designers crafting apparel just made for the Spring/Summer runway shows---and has been showing body conscious  evening wear in wonderful lush prints and festive bold colors-since forever...inspired by Brazil in one way or another-including the catwalk music-a special remix of the 1970's song by Vinicius de Moraes and Toquinho-A Tonga da Mironga do Kabulete.

FYI: Only this year did we see bold color/prints --- as a status quo for NYFW's Spring 2012.

Beginning with the sheer flowing looks-kaftans in goldfish, oyster, reef and sea cliff silk chiffon kaftans --- exotic tropical patterns (our top pick) that opened the show---to the more structured, mermaid hem ball gown-a vivid blue silk taffeta-wih light blue silk faille detail- that was the last look-there wasn't a style we didn't give two thumbs up...including some 70's chic daywear.

Hair by Rodeney Cutler for Cutler-was slick back-hanging straight- simple-the apparel was the focus...as if the gals were fresh out of the ocean-off a far flung Brazilian beach-and managed to effortlessly get it all together for a night out in Rio de Janeiro. A delight from start to finish.
