TEMPERLEY LONDON’s FALL 2009 RTW

“EXPRESS OF THE ORIENT”

April 2, 2009, SOHO-NYC

Words, Images Judith Ecochard

We missed the initial staging of designer Alice Temperley’s Fall Collection back in February…but love her artistic knit dresses that remind us of whimsical color field paintings-

So we hauled it downtown to the showroom, StarworksNY that reps this British creative talent on this side of the Pond.

IMHO: Yes, the Orient theme is elegantly played out in a opulent red rose, black and white print …as in a Aubrey Beardsley illustration… as in cocoon shape “Quilted Geisha Coat.”

BUT -The stunning evening gowns and cocktail dresses with glittering gold, hand embroidered/beaded hieroglyphics… really stole the show (we assume). Red carpet knockouts or for us mere mortals, investment pieces!!!!

And we feel confident that never, ever, ever will we see cheaper knockoffs of these gloriously ornamented items. That’s why that even in this economy, one goes for the real deal.

Temperley delivers a complete collection, full of hip daywear (mini skirts, fitted blazers, lacey blouses, skinny and harem-esque high waist pants, wide belts with jackets) and sophisticated, glam bridal too.

The buttery leather separates…biker jackets and “waistcoats” are hot, hot, hot…edged with gold zippers and feminine-shaped via detailed seams.

Highlights are Temperley’s posh accessories. Her jewel-like evening bags are standouts-with her signature Apple Bag and Orient Spheres. It’s perfect for the gal who only needs a lipstick, keys and maybe her credit card or a few Euro notes for a night out.

We are haulers, however…and really felt the leather satchels (in python print, lizard patterns) are roomy enough for gals going from office cubicles to happening restaurant banquettes. What distinguishes Temperley London’s hobos, totes, clutches, and handbags are the just right amount of TASTEFUL metal bling trims and embellishments. Well done and missing from so many other accessory lines.

WHAT WE WANTED NOW:

The corset like, draped leather cincher, named the “Lalita Lotus Belt”…a knockout!
