Plant Based 'Milk' Trending NOW

Back in July-we wrote up several nut -plant based dairy  subs, from the Specialty Food Show.

Two new to us companies Elmhurst Dairy and Planet Oats are now fairly widely available...

Elmhurst  1925 (formerly Dairy)- originally a milk producer from YES  Elmhurst, Queens-has relocated- and now serves up nut + oat 'milks' in various versions-all without the undesirable  additive carrageenan found in some other brands.
WE TRIED: Milked Oats-made up of water, oats, and salt---equivalent in thick-texture to non-fat-2% dairy cow milk. Elmhurst uses more oats (20grams/whole oats/serving)-instead of the aforementioned thickner.
Generally speaking-oat milk has a creamier taste than almond milk -which is probably why the former is REALLY fast growing in popularity. The color is more-brown tinged-because duh-it's from oats.Elmhurst 1925 Oat Milked is also VEGAN, non-GMO certified and free of major allergy trigger-tree nuts, peanuts, artificial colors or preservatives, dairy, soy, lactose, and gluten.
ALSO---we asked what makes a "Barista" version as such-we've seen this from other brands too...but Elmhurst 1925  Oat Milked version have only five ingredients (filtered water, whole grain oats, cane sugar, dipotassium phosphate, salt)...and no  plant oils (like sunflower) in it-unlike other brands. FYI-Barista versions are made specifically to foam well-for espresso drinks.
ELMHURST 1925 Milked products are in  Target and local stores plus online.
PLANET OATS- is strictly oat based milk-a separate venture for HP Hood. The original (90 calories/serving), extra creamy (120 calories/serving) and vanilla (90 calories/serving versions have no added sugars, all are non-GMO certified---and with a 'milk' liquid texture-can be used cold or hot-to sub for the cow dairy version. (Serving=240 mL=1 cup-8.11 oz)
We tried the original in a cup of decaf-and it had the consistency of non-fat -2% milk-which factored in with how much needed per cuppa coffee.
It does have a slightly different taste than almond milk when mixed in-which is what we usually use in AM Java-with a similar nutrition profile...meaning respectable source of Vitamin D + calcium, no cholesterol.

The original ingredients c/p

OATMILK (FILTERED WATER, OATS), CALCIUM CARBONATE, DIPOTASSIUM PHOSPHATE (STABILIZER), SEA SALT, GELLAN GUM, VITAMIN A PALMITATE, VITAMIN D2, RIBOFLAVIN (VITAMIN B2) AND VITAMIN B12.
Planet Oats 'milks' are all free from major allergens...tree nuts, peanuts, gluten, lactose, artificial preservatives/flavors, soy, dairy, Available in  52 oz size containers-$3.99 -at big grocery chains like Harris Teeter, Acme, Shoprite etc-and online at Amazon Fresh
