Sierra Designs has successfully merged their technical heritage with a new lineup of warm and eco oriented outerwear…that got retailers, and us…buzzing.
First off we reviewed the new Flex Down™ Jacket that uses the expandable baffle technology used in the company’s sleeping bags. Translated that means that the 750 Fill jacket has a body and upper sleeves constructed so as to eliminate constriction and improve thermal efficiency by hugging the body and eliminating air pockets. ($249)
The Green Effects Program now five years old---includes desirable garments made from the odor resistant, durable knit/all-natural, UPF strong, and sustainable Cocona™ fabric, and recycled poly shell (PET from soda bottles… Primaloft® Eco (down plus 50% recycled polyester), post consumer recycled Climashield™ Green insulation, solvent free laminates, and PVC free seams. Well sourced!
ANd the admirable materials (and there are more not mentioned), fortunately, are made into some of the better fitting, and smart quality apparel out there.
We liked the men’s and women’s version of the hardshell, Cyclone™ Eco Jacket ($189)-that’s waterproof, breathable with a fully adjustable Fast Pack Hood™ that’s helmet compatible, PVC free seam taping, and pit zips. There’s a matching, versatile full zip pants too…and an earbud portal in the jacket’s chest pocket for full coverage that rocks.
For men and women, the Kenosha™ jackets function like stylish wind shirts with Cocona™ lining that wicks away moisture while retaining heat. Pockets are cool too… invisible zipped hand and chest pockets for small keeps.

There’s also a complete grouping of base layer separates-the Ember ½ Zip, Ember Crew and Ember Pants made from the fast drying Cocona™ fabric that features techy details like extreme stretch, flatlock seams, and thumbholes at cuffs for the tops.
The Barricade™ Hybrid hoody, jacket, vest and pants (with ankle zips and storm flaps)—set to launch in August 2009, are waterproof/breathable pieces courtesy of hard shell Drizone™Green (100% recycled polyester) in exposed areas like the shoulder and chest panels. With sets for guys and gals we are very impressed with the functionality of these layerable separates…that have assorted ex and internal pockets, YKK® reverse coil zippers, earbud portals and can work while climbing, hiking, snowboarding and hiking.
There is also a line up of insulated, waterproof and breathable, seam sealed Booties made from the Drizone™ that “are the best, warmest, most comfortable bootie known to mankind.”
AND THE RAINBOW WORTHY COLOR SELECTIONS ARE THE ON TARGET!!!
