Canali Spring/Summer 2008

It still amazes us (and many a lass)… that cost per sq. inch of high end men’s clothing, particularly two- piece suits, are significantly lower than the female equivalent...but significantly higher in quality.

It used to be that the most ladies’ garments were of complicated construction- darts, seams etc for a more fitted silhouette. At least that’s the argument dry cleaners still use to explain the out of whack price differentials to clean similar clothes of two different genders. But most upscale clothing for men now feature sophisticated designs and couture like details. Hmmmmmmm!





COLLECTION ENVY



On a recent preview of the updated classics of Italian menswear line, Canali…we were reminded of these sentiments. The everything made in Italy superb quality of the precisely cut, natural fibered (silk, wool, cotton), hand finished suits was obvious. Even the casual follower of tailored modes can spot the polished structure of Canali’s traditional boxy and/or modern fitted shoulders (composed of wadded, pre-shaped cotton and horsehair -inserted just prior to stitching the sleeve), the functional and well finished four inside pockets, the clever underarm shields hand sewn separately from the lining, and stitched on label facings.








The innovative and performance perfect sportswear (especially a reversible leather/ cotton canvas bomber jacket) were ship to shore must haves for men who demand the best. Elegant footwear for all occasions in dark leathers, more than satisfied the old adage shoes make the man, have been joined by updated driving loafers and two toned, laced sport shoes in casual, lighter hued palettes.









Equally dreamy was Canali’s expanded line of exotic skinned accessories such as brown croc trimmed, nylon or canvas briefcases, as well as timeless woven mesh and silk/24K gold threaded ties.






Naturally, the entire collection elicited wistful longings for a women’s line. We imagined ladies secretly wondering if the smaller sized garb would fit them. Luckily, the oversized, white canvas travel satchel, stylishly trimmed with dark brown leather (and other carryalls) can work for everyone.

















Founded in 1934 by brothers Giovanni and Giacomo, Canali is still family owned and operated by a third generation. The descendants hold each item with their name on it… to the most exacting standards. No wonder such fashionable icons such as George Clooney are outfitted in Canali’s garments- in films requiring a look of self assured, monetary success.

And he probably kept the movie wardrobe...we would!
