CONSTANCE WHITE: A CONVERSATION WITH eBay’S STYLE DIRECTOR

eBay SUITE: ROYALTON HOTEL, WEST 44th STREET, NYC

FEBRUARY 18th, 2009

Words, Images Judith Ecochard

Our conversation with eBay’s knowledgeable and au courant Style Director, Constance White was a highlight of this past NY FASHION WEEK's activities.

We met up with this guru of all things sold with flair-on an afternoon where we looked forward to, CRAVED REALLY- an engaging conversation without any ear splitting music rockin' the background.

Ensconced in the spacious bright penthouse of the recently refurbished Royalton Hotel, we found White chatting with pals R.Scott French and Meredith Garcia (The Fashion List) and PR maven Linda Gaunt.

Revived with a quick jolt of java, we joined the conversation to find out White’s take on Spring fashion picks and eBay’s Green initiative.

LYRA MAG:
What do you think will be the hot eBay picks for the upcoming season?

WHITE:
What people are bidding on for Spring are (1) statement necklaces from prestige names like Kenneth Jay Lane and Tom Binns, (2) skinny jeans, (3)chunky heal shoes like platform and wedges, (4) footwear from big designer names like Christian Loubintin, (5)across the board sunglasses for men and women in styles like aviators, and by big designer names like Dolce & Gabanna and Marc Jacobs, (6) bags including clutches, chain handle or carry bags for day and evening, and (7) anything with the fringe look and the color fushia

LYRA MAG: What surprises you about what sells?

WHITE: Fur surprises me…how much is selling including chubbies, scarves, and fur lined coats. Also boyfriend jackets are selling.

LYRA MAG: What about the effect a young celeb has on online traffic when photographed in an emerging designer?

WHITE: eBay tracks the ascent of these celeb driven pieces ie what a Lindsay Lohan, Nicole Ritchie or Nicole Kidman wore to the Golden Globes. New labels that are not well known start cropping up, maybe 2-10 pieces by sellers.

LYRA MAG:
Any names?

WHITE:
Jason Wu and Rag & Bone.

LYRA MAG:
How has the Fashion industry changed?

LINDA GAUNT:
Social networking’s importance. You can’t just shoot a campaign and create the collateral…the channels are different-that’s where the change is.”

WHITE:
Fashion was TV driven and endorsed by magazines. Now there are so many ways to “pop.” Michelle Obama, she’s a celebrity.

The public relations strategy is/helps the business strategy…and overall educating the public… strategic information.”

LYRA MAG:
What about capsule collections…as soon as Victor & Rolf’s H & M collection hit, pieces were already online being bid up beyond their initial prices?

WHITE: It’s not as frenzied as it used to be…the older ones were nuts…Comme Des Garcon and the Karl Langerfeld’s collections (for H&M).

We also noted that it is a challenge selling clothes and shoes online but that eBay has sizing helpful charts... and sellers provide details and measurements. We also discussed fakes---and White brightly pointed out that by using PayPal, “you can get your money back, buy from sellers with good ratings.”

eBay’S GREEN INITTATIVE

What could be more eco than buying vintage, recycled or gently used clothes on eBay. Shoppers can even buy organic clothing or items made from sustainable materials by entering the search field accordingly.

From the press release we learned:
•Shopping online—through sites like eBay—produces less greenhouse
gases than shopping at the mall. Choose ground shipping for the most
planet friendly delivery option.
•The sale of used laptops on eBay in 2007 alone saved 69,000 tons of
C02—which has the same effect as saving 437 acres of forest in the
fight against global warming.
•The sale of used handbags on eBay over the last three years has
reduced greenhouse gases in an amount equivalent to planting
2.4million trees.
•The sale of used golf clubs on eBay over the last three years has
reduced greenhouse gases in an amount equivalent to taking 22,000
cars off the road for a year.
•eBay Inc. has the largest commercial solar panel installation in the city
of San Jose, CA and has been a carbon-neutral company since 2007.

FOR SALE:
The eBay suite was elegantly attired itself---with poshly clothed mannequins featuring vintage outfits from three popular sellers-Denise Zeide (Magnificent Vintage), Linda Lightman (Linda’s Stuff), and Ricky Serbin (Ricky's Exceptional Treasures).

We thought the YSL getup (a purple brocade jacket with palazzo pants from Ricky’s Exceptional Treasures was (is) a bargain, tagged at $500.

SEATTLE’S TATOO ARTIST LIVEN UP STANLEY BEVERAGE CONTAINERS

Words Judith Ecochard

Oudoor Retailer Market, SLC

We applaud all attempts at recycling plastic water bottles. Even the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week-Bryant Part Tents had recycling bins.

What’s really eco-chic though is carrying a re-usable water bottle filled with whatever…so we were jazzed to see the urban cool display at the iconic brand Stanley exhibitor’s stall…that proudly served up a “Not Your Grandpa’s Stanley.”

The new generation of drinkwear gear, Nineteen13 is “made for the mobile life…from city streets to the outdoors.”

Five cutting edge styles: a recycled and recyclable 16oz mug, a 24 oz BPA Free Water Bottle, a 24oz Stainless Steel Water Bottle, a 16 oz Stainless Steel Vacuum Bottle and a 16oz Insulated Travel Mug---- all sport urban edgy graphics (snakes, winged skulls) in shades of, brown, beige, grey and black (of course)…with slashes of bold orange and red.

We think, this is the hippest way to go and felt positively happenin’ carrying our BPA Free Water Bottle around.

As noted in the press release:

“We have taken all that we have learned in the last 100 years and applied it to make a product that is relevant to an active lifestyle” explains Ken Mitchell, VP Marketing and Product Development.

A fitting tribute.

1909 VICTORINOX: MEN’S FALL/WINTER 2009

“VERRECHIA L’OFFICIEL HOMME”

February 18th, 2009, Midtown Manhattan

Words, Images Judith Ecochard

We greatly admired/coveted the upscale VICTORINOX’s RTW separates we previewed at the Outdoor Retailer Show in Salt Lake City. The designer for this menswear label- Pierre-Henri Mattout, handsomely captured the “fashion meets function” mandate for the clothing line of the iconic Original Swiss Army Knife brand.

The 1909 VICTORINOX show in the Big Apple that we saw during New York’s Fashion Week “is for a very different customer than the other collection,” enthused Mattout---who graciously gave us a few minutes of his time after the runway display.

To our eyes, these garments are for a younger, hipper customer, one with an ‘American’ need for modern sportswear fused with streetwear edge plus dabs of European traditional slim silhouettes.

According to the program notes, Mattout was inspired by some Amish clothing unearthed in a vintage store and a serendipitous encounter with Amish teenagers in Times Square on a “rumspringa” year of livin’ the contemporary life away from home.

This translated into wearable looks in techy fabrics…like in a car coat length trench in wax cotton, padded slim fitting purple ski pants, and some tailored pieces in “mineral grey tones for utilitarian suiting…”

The second part of the collection turned casual in a blaze of autumnal colors as in heavy jersey trousers, with the cool detail of field padding emerging from the waists, long johns under long athletic shorts like old school skate/snowboarders, patchwork tees made from leftover scraps of fabrics, (yeah-eco)… and a very chic take on the American classic Varsity jacket that reminded us of the wares from the French label Hoon that is sold in Paris’ cutting edge boutique, Collette.

Accessories included wool caps and extra long scarves that we think will end up in gal pal wardrobes.

THE CROWD: Lot’s of French men of course, and fashion guru/pal Marc Jacobs.

AN OBSERVATION: We’ve been backstage plenty of times, but we have never seen so many men AND women go weak at the knees when meeting the debonair Mattout. Très amusant!

EMERGING LUXURY FOR INDIVIDUALS

Édité Showroom, Garment Center NYC February 25th, 2009

Words, Images Judith Ecochard

London based Vassilisa is a timeless romantic collection of elegant gowns and separates designed by the graceful Nadja Solovieva.

For Autumn/Winter 2009 Solovieva is inspired by her rich native “Russian Orthodox architecture, and golden icons…and the shapes are like garments that Russian women wear under saraphin jumpers.

“I don’t look at trends…I look at fairy tales, mythologies, art, architecture…and bits and elements I find at flea markets,” Solovieva notes.

We loved the elegant gold fabrics that are used in cocktail length frocks and a Goddess like long gown with a lovely woven bodice.

“I design for two categories…young socialites in their 20’s…and clients in their late 30’s/40’s who want to look like no other.”

It’s clear Solovieva admires YSL because her painstakingly HAND SEWN clothes while luxe, have a definite bohemian edge.

DEVI KROELL: FALL/WINTER 2009

REFINED TAILORING/KNOCKOUT CARRYALLS

Words, Images Judith Ecochard

Devi Kroell’s sophmore outing is all about dressing the executive New York/DC women that work in corporations, the halls of Congress, or serve on charity boards.

For versatile day to evening looks there are several appropriate attire options…a silk wool boucle jacket, a boxy black silk suit with origami flourishes, ruffled collars, and slim cigarette style pants paired with a chic shrunken jacket that had us thinking Gucci/Tom Ford. Our initial reaction was wow- this is how grown-up women dress.

For cocktail affairs there are a lot of rich shimmering jewel toned silk frocks with gentle draping/gatherings…both strapless and sleeveless.

The bags are stunning (duh) as in an oversized python shopper and foldover clutches.

The highlight, shoewise is the Joker Bootie “crafted with a hidden platform, a fierce and chic metal encasing detail on the architectural tubular heel…”

Kudos to the airbrush perfection of Temptu makeup artists.

MARC BY MARC JACOBS: FALL/WINTER 2009

New York State Armory, Lexington Ave. NYC
February 17th, 2009

Words, Images Judith Ecochard

Marc Jacobs proper is a highlight of Fashion Weeks anywhere. Period.

His more youthful second line Marc By Marc Jacobs is also watched as it is a coveted label to wear by like every tweener on up---that we know--- who wears clothes and cares about effortless cool style.

For us, it was kinda a trip on the wayback machine in terms of the garb. The vivid colors (teal, wine, red, lava black), prints (plaids, paisleys, bold striped scarves) textures (wool, tweeds, silks, cords, velvets) and general pulled together styling of the layered ensembles for gals/guys was exceptional---no wonder fashionistas drool over this collection. But it definitely took us back to the mid eighties for sure.

Like back to our school days in a lot of the looks---with some of the feminine silhouettes.

Especially the wide belted shaped not shrunken blazers …and knits with gentle ruffled hems, wool trousers, oversized shawls, long sleeve dresses with belted waists and little peaked puffed shoulders, lace up boots with colored tights/leggings, and warm top button overcoats that are gracefully nipped in slightly at the waist…and puff out in a slight A-line (like the ones we grew up in from Best & Company)… and lastly, the felt hat toppers.

Interestingly enough we wore tons of Perry Ellis by Mr. P.E himself...a label Jacobs worked for. Bummer we grew two inches in a way, we’d still be wearing the separates.

THE MEN:

We didn’t know what to expect as no guy we hang out with/family members wears or even thinks about donning Marc By Marc Jacobs. But we think they’ll reconsider. We saw very handsome polished, tailored looks including terrif pullover sweaters and cardigans, wool blazers, an always need dark brown trench, overcoats that’ll work over a suit as well as a tees/denim, cuffed wool and cord pants, and tweed jackets. Without a thought to the label… guys will wear these clothes ...they're well made, elegant--- AND not old-fashioned.

An insane amount has been written about the event Marc Jacob’s--- but we saw a RTW runway show…that started on time…and was flawlessly executed. No drama except where it should be…on the models struttin’ down the runway.

GRAEY: FALL 2009

ARTFUL INFLUENCES IN SILK

February 13th, 2009

We always make a point of covering emerging designers…and Janet Kim. A Harvard grad certainly is one.

Walking into an apartment development’s PH-we kinda felt like we were at a college reunion as we met alum from our alma mater Columbia, as well as other ivory tower schools.

Which means nothing in fashion.

What we liked best was the bold use of solid colors, clearly influenced by Kim’s knowledge of light and tone…maybe via all those Art History classes.

The capped and sleeveless frocks with color semi-circle shapes are our favorite. We think though, someone else should have sewn the samples…as the circles puckered along the rims and some other hems weren’t properly finished. And even under the GUNN Project Runway contestants know better than that.

A talent to watch….

LEIFSDOTTIR FALL 2009

Garment Center, NYC February 18th, 2009

Words, Images Judith Ecochard

The girly frilly Leifsdottir gal has gone moody romantic for Fall 2009.

She had help too---in the clever staged tableau vivant settings that featured banquet tables laden with precious lace and rich tapestries, candelabras, exotic sweets, fruits and objets trouvé…lit by overhead glowing torches.

Amidst this setting, the strolling, coy models looked as if they stepped out of the large ancestral canvases, Harry Potter style-----that line the oversized staircases of medieval castles…perfectly coiffed and glowingly made up in keeping with the theme of mysterious splendor.

But the clothes, naturally were for the 21st century.

We had a lovely chat with Executive Design Director Johanna Uurasjarvi who cited her trip to the ancient monastery of Mont St Michelle, off the coast of Normandy, and the gothic architecture of old castles in general, full of gargoyles and griffins, as the jumping off point for “the magical quality” of her collection.

As usual, the details and embellishments are outstanding including loads of finely woven lace –as on a onyx black dauphine lace dress, well stitched pleating, ruching and trims on lovely silk blouses and wool skirts, ruffled flares on finely knit cardigans, griffon printed inner linings, colors derived from old oil paintings and tapestries… “alchemy gold, crimson berry, bold floral prints” …and little brass buttons.

“There is a feminine element but with more of a modern attitude,” Uurasjarvi notes.

“Though my favorite part of the show was doing the hair…like the styles in oil paintings…really cool.”

FYI: Leifsdottir is part of the Anthropologie mothership---and available at higher end boutiques, Bloomingdales. Bergdorf’s and Nordstrum’s.

BAND OF OUTSIDERS: FALL/WINTER 2009

BAND and BOY LOOKS FOR MEN and WOMEN

Lower Manhattan, NYC February 15th 2009

Words, Images Judith Ecochard

Scott Sternberg’s finely tailored suits have garnered a feverish following among a lot of guys we know-the ones with real jobs BTW---because the threads are polished perfect with a bit of American swagger. And fit beautifully with slim silhouettes fused with sharp American shoulders.

For this season-33 layered ensembles on models staged in amusing/ironic prop populated vignettes allowed for a leisurely stroll/look see in the spacious, sun filled loft. And IMHO…Band Of Outsiders nailed it.

The Band looks (for guys) has plenty of those terrif blazers/jackets- B of O’s signature pieces- including a nifty black worsted wool tuxedo jacket with a silk satin lapel (paired with lux grey shetland wool/cotton terry tuxedo sweatpants!), and a gray waxed cotton corduroy suit. Overcoats are handsome-we saw several winners --- a brown wool Donegal tweed car coat, a camel hair and grey wool overcoats (to throw over suits/oxford cloth shirts), and a navy wool melton toggle coat.

There are upscale separates for the leisure gentlemen too…in comfy fabrics like a washed denim workshirt, a rust cotton corduroy schoolboy blazer, and wool flannel trousers. Even the knit newsboy hats and guys’ shoes-Band of Outsiders for Sperry Top-Siders struck the right note about what’s the best of American fashion…comfortable, well-tailored sportswear without the fuss.

The Boy (women’s) looks were equally winning and should make this label a must on many retail buyers wish list.

Like the men, gals have some well made blazers/suit jackets…a black worsted wool double breasted blazer, a navy military style one, and a black/white/grey Donegal tweed wool/silk blend double breasted jacket with matching shorts.

There are some warm stylish sweaters too-available in several lengths…both long black cashmere…and shorter-a mohair blend cable knit sweater in a grey stripes, and a blue/green striped one with a backward v neck.

And we also totally appreciated the description: “Hyoni wears a mohair blend colorblock sweater…err…thing”

So well put.

Leather lace-ups stilettos in assorted colors made our mouths water…and no wonder…they’re by Manolo Blahnik for Band of Outsiders. Yummy.

We’re glad we made the trek downtown for this collection---and feel this label should have major legs overseas too. (If it doesn’t already).

VITTADINI: FALL/WINTER 2009

SEASONLESS DRESSING WELL DONE

THE INTERNATIONAL PHOTOGRAPHY CENTER 43rd/6th Avenue
February 16th, 2009

Words, Images Judith Ecochard

The legendary Adrienne Vittadini outfitted generations of American women in sensuous, affordable, and comfortable, well made of knits.

The company is now headed up by lead designer Kristiina Salminen and execs that “have a DNA understanding and can make modern…what Vittadini is about.”

We took in the presentation of 24 looks in galleries that appropriately featured exhibits on Fashion photography –the old (Edward Steichen) and the new (Weird Beauty: Fashion Photography Now).

We noticed right away the light and medium weight textured knit dresses and layerable separates adorning mannequins throughout --all in lovely Fall colors of forest greens, peacock blues, and grey…and a few light taupe pieces. Signature cardigans and coats (including a hand crotchet gray tweed knit sample) in cocoon shapes, and dresses in luxe fabrics like panne velvet and satin crepe--- reminds us how this modern classic label is evolving - working with an assortment of fabrics and not just knits.

And…how Vittadini still appeals to a wide swath of women because the label gives them what they look great in…and ‘ups’ it with embellishments that subtly stand out. And know your customer is always a good (sellable) mantra.

The attention to detail ---the ruching, inverted pleats, feathered epaulets on the softly draped pieces- are extra flourishes that add interest to the basics.

MARCHESA: FALL 2009

GEORGINA CHAPMAN and KEREN CRAIG =ANOTHER KNOCKOUT COLLECTION

February 18th, 2009

It’s a bit absurd reviewing a Marchesa collection…it’s all so fabulous.

Whether it’s layers of tulles, detailed embroideries and dreamy sequins, confections of airy chiffon ruffles artfully put together, cascades of silk, ribbons and feathers, etc, etc…well no wonder half these gowns were probably on a plane by 6PM, headed to LA for the Oscars.

Colors were pastel pink, scarlet red, a smoky lavender, plum purple, pewter, black and gray. We also liked how the silhouettes were varied giving real women (not just Red Carpet strollers) wearable options that are age appropriate. We could see as a formal alternative-for an Ellen Barkin type (or us) a strapless scarlet wool jumpsuit or the “sculptured black silk wool jacket with a cut out star shoulder detail” and narrow tuxedo pants.

And in a nod to chilly temps…there was a fantastic plum suede fitted coat with a great embroidered belt that harked back to something fantastic that Veruschka would have worn.

And the Christian Louboutin shoes…Oh Mon Dieu.

GENERRA: FALL/WINTER 2009

TRENDY Men’s & Women’s Layered Warmth

February 17th, 2009

Words, Images Judith Ecochard

Generra reminds us of a Euro-chic version of the GAP…meaning stylish, interchangeable separates, well made basics we never seem to have enough of…and a certain cool that seems to flow effortlessly when topped by a knitted cap. Like the getups of streams of Generation Y-ers and Millenniums individuals- i.e. our Manhattan born and raised nephews and nieces. They always got it going.

In a midtown space the presentation featured 27 guys and gals with piled on multi-textured garb that managed to be smartly put together and NOT MICHELIN MAN BULKY. Fall perfect, we can see a light heather aluminum grey mohair/wool cardigan becoming a cold weather staple in many wardrobes. Here the long sweater was paired with a feminine ruffle neck top under a grey ribbed tank… over a mini girly shadow flower plaid pleated hem skirt.

Other separates we loved included a knobby wool Bordeaux bouclé plaid hooded poncho coat, lots of skinny pants and leggings offsetting more substantial tops including some puffers, ribbed turtlenecks, and a few cute dresses like a zig-zag print ruffle front one. Layered on/over- of course.

Guys got some terrific, handsome pieces including belted and toggled sweater jackets, flat front grey or black chinos, a black Sherpa-collar barn coat, country gentleman ready blazers, and the seen everywhere carbo techno puffer vest.

MODELS’ HAPPY: The Sorel footwear, one of our fav outdoor performance brands…way more comfy that just about anything else these mannequins wore on their feet all week.

G-STAR RAW MEN’S & WOMEN’S FALL/WINTER 2009

400th ANNIVERSARY OF DUTCH ARRIVAL IN NEW YORK HARBOR AND THIS YEAR’S COLLECTION BY NETHERLAND’S HIPPEST BRAND=SOMETHING TO CELEBRATE

We’re beginning to think that the Dutch orchestrate the ultimate in 21st century events à la the Big Apple since they sailed up the mighty Hudson River- four centuries ago.

Maybe all that practice makes perfect.

In a week full of wonder (Grace Jones on the catwalk)…we were staggered into silence by indie actor/Oscar winner Benicio Del Toro’s reading of “CANDIDATE” by the “only band that matters,” Joy Division (OK-the Clash too). Naturally he was attired in custom G-STAR RAW…and paying tribute to the label that supported his staring role in the film “CHE”----

And the label that chose those lyrics in turn also honored the Dutch photographer/director Anton Corbijn who shot G STAR’s Spring campaign. The arresting images displayed on oversized placards surrounding Bryant Park this week (smart)… is just one indication of this multi-faceted talented man who directed/produced the B/W 2007 flick “CONTROL” about the post punk band’s tortured lead singer Ian Curtis.

Nothing torturous about seeing this collection. We were frankly surprised at how sophisticated the au courant denim brand’s clothes are.

THE COLLECTION:

The Fall/Winter G-STAR Raw collection that strutted the Hammerstein Ballroom’s tri-runways…was an‘event’ RTW show as far as we were concerned. Last year’s outing at the Park Avenue Armory…an inventive extravaganza… effortlessly blended artistic choreography and a great end poverty cause---a blend that those dwelling across the pond just seem to “get.” No trauma over what is ART...just an effortless blend of culture by G-STAR RAW that started with actor Dennis Hopper a year ago. And this latest collection lived up to the cool tradition.

THE SHOW:

Behind a gauzy stage curtain, two musicians played classical music on grand pianos…that we thought was an arresting contrast to the industrial urban attire that we saw. And a nice break from all of the tinnitus inducing ‘tunes’ we have been subjected to in the past few days.

Another surprise--- G-Star’s design team use of mixed textiles like silk, cashmere, and leather for a visually striking interplay of soft and hard edge, shiny and matte surfaced garments.

For women, the long cutaway NY RAW NOA jackets in wool, a hipster worthy leather “Ledge Zip Jacket,” and a warm coated denim parka are winter perfect and we think---will sell beyond Amsterdam’s borders. We also liked a capped sleeve dress and a romper in techno slick fabrics that bumped this label to cutting edge beyond any denim brand we follow.

The guys got plenty of well-tailored long jackets too (reminded us of Broadway’s Spring Awakening’s wardrobe) akin to formal eveningwear attire. There is also some technically appropriate pocketed, multi-strapped overcoats atop warm layers of knit sweaters, and dropped crotched pants that worked with the overall ensembles----IMHO under less skilled design teams this would have looked silly.

Special mention also goes to the lace-up boots/stompers… of G-STAR RAW FOOTWEAR.

FYI: The Dutch generously announced the building of the New Amsterdam Plein & Pavillion, a gift presented by The Netherlands Government to New York City, designed by Dutch architect Ben van Berkel of UN Studio, Amsterdam. The 5,000 square-foot Plein & Pavillion, a tribute to 400 years of friendship, will be permanently erected at the tip of Manhattan’s Battery Park hopefully in time for the September 8th through September 13th Harbor Day celebrations. LACOSTE: FALL/WINTER 2009

Bryant Park Tents, Mercedes Benz Fashion Week

February 14th 2009

Words, Judith Ecochard

Lacoste’s RTW runway show is always a hot ticket…as the elaborate staging of Men’s and Women’s garb is a festive affair. Oui, Oui.

Christophe Lemaire, Lacoste's designer's--- outing this time was received with mute applause, at least where we were ensconced. Maybe it was the fact that people were tired/hungover or that the usual Lacoste bag given to attendees---was mon Dieu...not there.

We liked what we saw however, and felt the more sophisticated upscale Black Collection had many utterly wearable separates.

And will do well in brick and mortar retail stores where consumers can get up close and personal with the lineup.

The strong points were the warm, comfy overcoats in double faced wool and ponchos for gals that were ribbon wrapped/piled on Annie Hall style, chic cropped high waist trousers made with luxe Italian jersey wool and a easy wear draw string pocketed gray knit jumpsuit with cowl neck. The monochrome pastel palette of a robins egg blue, dove gray, and ivory will offer some pop in winter…though we felt the mustard yellow (or egg yolk shade) is tough to wear with some skin tones.

There are some playful pieces too…including mini knit skirts with leggings and long pocketed wrap worthy sweaters, well made slightly shrunken sporty blazers atop long sleeve button downs (love the looks paired with a feminine ties à la Diane Keaton)…and the signature cozy cap/scarf toppers to ward off the cold.

Guys looks are sharply tailored-especially the creamy oatmeal shaded blazers, waistcoats, grandpa style cardigans, and pants that are properly fitted (not that insane shrunken look). Plus the argyle and geometric patterned knit sweaters…will have women borrowing them from their boyfriends to wear belted as tunics.

The crocodile logo was invisible to our eyes ---we sat way up in the stratosphere---but are on every piece, as always we assume…in the same color as the solid toned separates.

C’est tres jolie.

ELISE ØVERLAND: FALL/WINTER 2009

“SHIMMER”

West Chelsea, NYC September 14th 2009

Words, Images by Judith Ecochard

Norwegian Elise Øverland likes her music very, very loud, and her clients' attire full of tour ready, sexy separates.

A former leatherwear tailor for rockers like Aerosmith’s Steve Tyler, Øverland really shook it up textile wise- in this late night Valentine’s Day outing. Deep dark tones, plus what we think of as mardi gras purple…. and the interplay of light off the hard/soft…matte’shiny surfaces of fabrics in the tableau vivant presentation---was striking. Indeed…we were thinking “My Bloody Valentine” by pop rockers Good Charlotte ---the whole time we were there (not the 3D slasher film remake). Romantic, sad, yearning and uplifting optimistic feelings all bundled up.

And as noted in WWD, her inspiration was “…a sushi book I was given. The sexy dark, macabre Japanese fish.” Nothing like a palette we would want to eat with the Yakuza.

Amidst Øverland’s signature hip chick ready leather leggings (in dark grey), dresses (in a white stretch version that looked amazing)…and jackets (like a very wearable cool purple leather blazer with strong shoulder, and an algae green biker), are shimmery silk pieces we would wear with everything- like a black silk georgette tank, a sensuous detailed oyster silk charmeuse dress…. and moody velvets-as in a high waist smoked oyster sample and fitted leggings.

Pant silhouettes were clingy fitted, not loose-y pajama style---- a trend that seems to spill over from Spring 2009 that we don't think will sell so great. Øverland’s contribution from what we could tell- are dropped crotch jeans that managed to look on trend not a Hammer time redux. There are some metallics too- as in a super sexy silver lame top and a bronze lame and black silk bustier dress.

Special kudos to the MAC makeup artists, supervised by Nadine Luks who had the ladies' rimmed eyes dark smokey green and glowing.

MODEL COMPLAINT: The black patent leather spiked heel Trannie shoes that had the models feet throbbing. Turns out----Øverland got them online for $22 apiece.

RAG & BONE: FALL/WINTER 2009

West 26th Street, NYC February 13th, 2009

FYI: There is a modus operandi during NY’s Fashion Week where many rsvp to every show/presentation…and then work out their schedules, depending. Hence empty seats for theoretically over-subscribed shows.

Rag & Bone is not one of those collections. Every one who scored an invite to this clothing house’s showing wants to see it. Hence if one was a tad late for the 5PM start, tough luck/love getting said assigned seat, spot on the media riser, let alone getting in.

Well, it was certainly worth the ‘drag and bone’ squeezing in because this outing by Marcus Wainwright and David Neville was terrific…we think… their best ever.

A quick military strut by fast paced models heralded one great layered, mostly gray or black ensemble after another for this “armor”---“samurai” inspired collection. For guys…the subtle volume above the knee (ninja style) was balanced by cinched below the knee and ankles silhouettes. So not Hammer time TG.

On top, tough but buttery smooth black leather jackets, a practical hooded city (car) length gray jacket guys can wear over suits over casual garb, long military coats with crested buttons, a handsome chunky knit… and a look we love, a waistcoat (vest) even made an appearance. The interplay of textures was smart. We also like the suits including an evening outfit-that were sewn in the best way possible---with British tailoring and what looked like luxe Italian wool fabrics.

Women could wield their own weapons with cutaway-fencing style jackets and black leather jackets with arresting zips, layered over warm chunky knits with leggings or mini pleated kilts (we love the solid black).

And a one shoulder LBD was spot on.

The collection will please the already faithful…and get major play in retail stores IMHO.

THE NAME: We learned from Wikipedia that the rag and bone man was a British traveling ‘junk’ peddlers in England…who circled the country bartering for, “old rags, (for converting into fabric and paper), bones for making glue, scrap iron and other items.”

Nothing junk about this outing.

MAKEUP: The female models, from the neck up…looked naturally (not) saccharine) sweet to us. Pink glowing cheeks, glossy “Mori Red” lips and a subtle, no mascara eye did the trick--- letting the good looks of the models shine through, not spackled over. Not a bit smoky black eyes that we have seen practically everywhere else, so refreshing---- though Revlon is introducing their Black Matte Collection…(the eye pencil is wonderfully durable, we tried it). Gucci Westman, now Global Artistic Director at Revlon crafted the looks…and she’s married to David Neville.

HAIR: Samurai style top knots.

MORGANE LE FAY: FALL 2009

February 13, 2009

Morgane Le Fay Boutique, 67 Wooster Street, NYC

Words, Backstage Images

RTW Images courtesy of Morgane Le Fay/Marie Saeki PR.

We missed part of Morgane Le Fay’s RTW show as we had a long trek after the Heart Truth show at the Tents...

But we’re glad we made the effort to see as much as we could of Designer Liliana Casabal’s collection. We had an amazing ankle length gray silky raincoat that was cut as intricately as a Commes Des Garcons/Rei Kawakubo piece...that we left on an Amtrak train by mistake. Needless to say, this treasured item of clothing was never given over to Lost and Found.

THE LOOKS:
It was terrific, full of wearable fluid feminine layers of chiffon and intriguing bird hoops/wired skirts/dresses that we can see some young celeb wearing to collect her Grammy award. The color palette of white, black, a dusky purple, and a royal/turquoise blue is flattering on all skin tones.

Le Faye gets tagged with the adjective “ethereal” ...and it does fit this lineup of intelligent moody garb in the same way as Vera Wang’s latest RTW collections. After all Morgan Le Fay is the enchantress in Arthurian legends. Fortunately--like the benefits of modern times including indoor plumbing, Casabal's clothes are very comfortable to wear...which helps the attired feel confident too. This was one of the few shows we have been to where the models didn't rip off the shoes/garb as soon as humanely possible.

Added plus: we feel her trumpet style skirts, long sleeve button sheer blouses, and dresses, particularly a delicate Grecian style blue cocktail confection...with swaths of wrapped chiffon strips flowing on the model as she walked...is a good choice for a wide range of women and body types.

We also liked the equestrian style black leather boots that we have now seen at several shows. Backstage, the models were thrilled to get Doc Marten samples.

e.l.f. AFFORDABLE MINERAL MAKEUP:

GET THE LOOKS WITHOUT THE CHEMICALS

February 13th, 2009

Words, Judith Ecochard, Images from the company

We actually read email blasts…hoping to get the scoop on beauty brands that work, apply well, smell decent... and are inexpensive.

e.l.f. Cosmetics –a line sold at Big Kmart, Target and online…is paraben free, without chemicals …and is a mineral makeup line that everyone can splurge on.

Hot looks for Fall 2009- that are essentially classics by now--- are either the smoky eye neutral shiny lips, or bold red lips and dark feathery eyelashes.

To achieve the looks either start with a neutral shade (like Natural) or any other nude shade, and brush it all over eye lids, then, take a darker shade and apply it on the lid, only up to the crease. Achelle Dunaway, the brand’s creative light likes e.l.f. Mineral Eyeshadows in Royal (a dark purple) and Partier (a royal blue). “They’re different from black, but still dark enough to give a smoky eye.” ($3).

Use a liquid eyeliner to outline the eyes above and below the lid with the Waterproof Eyeliner Pen, $1 (available in Black, Coffee, Midnight, Plum and Ash,) and complete your look with a nude gloss like Super Glossy Lip Shine in Goddess, $1.

For the classic red lip, try e.l.f.’s new Studio Lip Primer and Plumper, $3 to prep, then top with moisturizing e.l.f. Mineral Lipstick in Cherry Red, $5, followed by Hypershine Lip Gloss in Vixen, $1. Widen those peepers with a swipe of Mascara, $1 and violà…the look for practically free.

NEW: Hot nail polish shades…like royal purple, dark navy, chocolate

6119 ILANA SUNDERLAND: FALL 2009

MODERN ELEGANCE FOR SOPHMORE COLLECTION

MILK STUDIOS, WEST 15th STREET, NYC
February 12th, 2009

Words, Images Judith Ecochard

Ilana Sunderland has designer talent in her DNA. “I descended from centuries of Scottish tailors,” she told us…after we picked up our dropped jaws. Which went all wide for good reasons.

Sunderland’s collection is her second… and her polished, impeccable lineup should have the retail buyers all jazzed over the wonderfully draped and pleated silk charmeuse, some woven with leather- and chiffon dresses. Plus elegant short cocktail and long coats in wool crepe.

For men the handsome Savile Row worthy suits are in single and double breasted jackets featuring single and double baroque pleated lapels and layered under have forever cashmere overcoats.

Men’s colors include Espresso, a rich brown, (duh) Midnight black, and Onyx (a subtle brown/ red)…while the ladies had solids and an “Espresso Tartan” and “IS Tartan” and custom animal prints in the mix.

In general, the lean silhouettes and high tailored garb seemed cozy warm to the eye…but according to Sunderland “because of a special draping technique, the clothes feel like you are wearing nothing…weightless.”

“I believe in everyone,” Sunderland declared…I believe in food, shelter…and investment dressing.”

We Love:
IT’S MADE IN THE USA!!!!

NARY MANIVONG: FALL 2009

SEXY DAY TO COCKTAIL ATTIRE

February 12, 2009

West 49th Street, Midtown Manhattan

Words, Images Judith Ecochard

Nary Manivong was in a celebratory mood at his RTW showing -held at the beginning of NY’s Fashion Week. We not only felt his on target 14 looks were—well- on target…but that his likeable personality makes him a natural for the camera as well as a pleasure to be around. (See the doc “Dressed”).

In his late 20’s and originally from Laos and very humble beginnings, Manivong is a self-taught designer who grew up in OHIO!!!! “Yeah the Buckeyes,” he smiled when queried on his loyalties.

With styling straight out of the Robert Palmer “Addicted To Love” school book (pulled back, slick hair in ponytails, strong dark eyes, poppin’ lips), Manivong clued us in on his tableau vivant…
“…it’s all about the 80’s,”

Working with silk and rich wool velvets, and a nifty elastic stretch silk (we think we heard that right…the music was loud) in bold solid colors, Manivong channels a “wearable, feminine attitude…to wear to the office and wear out.”

One of our favorite looks was a side tied, softly clingin’ blue silk dress with intricate key hole cutouts leading up to a high neck collar.

Eminently wearable IMHO are the pocketed black silk slim fitted pants, cut just so at the petal shaped hems as to accentuate leg lengths and fall perfectly/delicately just at the top of the strappy high heel sandals…a detail designers often forget.

LORIS DIRAN: FALL 2009

THE FINEST TAILORING, RICH FABRICS, HIP CLASSICS

ALTMAN BUILDING, WEST 18TH STREET, NYC
FEBRUARY 12TH, 2009

Words, Images Judith Ecochard

Loris Diran,
a talented fashion veteran was inspired by “armor” and a “protective layer” for his Fall 2009 collection ---which we got the 411 on when we met him at his sleek Bowery boutique opening the previous week.

We think that adorning ourselves with Diran’s terrific lineup would make us feel all powerful and confident via the tailoring, fabrics and designs that oozed glamour and high class.

The suits for men and women in particular, are Diran’s signature pieces. Working with a focused palette of largely blacks, greys, wine, and cream-the flannel wool and tweed wool two and three button samples are stunning.

Thick knit sweaters, including a plush bark cashmere knit hooded cloak, and a bark angora pullover are samples of knockout luxurious pieces.

And shimmery metallics, the “it” textiles of many Spring lines we saw…cleverly appeared here in the last look…. a Shogun Boucle and strapless Organza Gown.

There was also one cocoon coat for ladies, a “grey mink/cashmere flannel piped armor coat” (Look # 23) that was strikingly modern and perfect for a chic gamine.

In general, Diran’s collection epitomizes investment dressing at its best…and reminds us of some of the amazing Donna Karan we splurged on during our Wall Street days…that still look amazingly refined and appropriate.

PS: Loved the music…beginning with a slice of Western movie notes, followed by The Clash’s “Magnificent Seven”…and ending with Ace Frehley’s “Back In The New York Groove.”

SUMPTUOUS FABRICS + CRAFT=ARTFUL DRESSES

RALPH PUCCI FUNRNITURE SHOWROOM, West 18th Street, NYC

FEBRUARY 12th, 2009

Words, Images Judith Ecochard

We were pleasantly surprised at Vinente Villarin’s Spring 2009 show at Bumble & Bumble last September. We got schooled in a matter of speaking… to the fine tailoring skills and sophisticated sensibilities of this Parson’s attendee (in Paris and New York).

Plus we were sitting next to designer Joanne Cordero Reyes’s impeccably dressed and super friendly family at the RTW runway show whre we learned the aspiring young talent as been sewing since the age of nine.

This time around, twenty-five Prada-esque mannequins were spot lit throughout the spacious Ralph Pucci Furniture Gallery…attired in delicate long and short evening looks...and a few day separates.

Themed “Beauty On Form” the run of show cited “…the magnetism and the alignment of objects in the same direction, bold and striking colors such as Nickel, Cobalt and Cerillion Blue, Marigold, Bordeaux and Diamond White join to create a rhythmic beauty…”

We chatted with the smart designer who cited the architecturally distinct Design Museum on 59th Street/Columbus Circle, NYC as an “inspiration” for “thinking about shapes, electrical engineering…and spiral models.”

The colors are unique,” she added, “and I do the patterns myself…criss-crossing, pleats, chevron molds in different patterns.”

We think the evening and cocktail frocks are the clear winners…crafted from amazing metallic weave textiles and shimmering silks that are intricately hand pleated into works of art. The taupe chevron criss cross-pleated drape dress and a long gown version---were our favorites.

“I always think of what I would wear…and had fun with this collection.”

CATHERINE HOLSTEIN: RWT FALL 2009

February 12th, 2009
385 Broadway -3rd Floor-NYC

WORDS, IMAGES JUDITH ECOCHARD

We were so reliving our own Gossip Girl school days when we use to slouch around the Mudd Club and Save The Robots in downtown Manhattan…at the recent indie fashion goddess, Catherine Holstein’s RTW show.

Crime is waaaaaay down now and the subways more or less work…but the edgy vibe inside the packed venue, with loud music drowning out any conversation… where we scanned for the fire exits…just in case…and a sense of real excitement was palbably.

Catherine Holstein is a rock and roller clothier for today’s feminine trendsters. Her Fall 2009 collection had the separates her hip following will love…including oversized boyfriend blazers in plaid, and a cocoonish coat in solid gray, stovepipe black pants or high waist, belted soft pleated trousers, above the knee slim drapey jersey wool dirndl skirts and long tunics/mini dresses in solids or a leopard print ( and we haven’t seen much in the way of animal prints this season), and long sweaters, atop sheer black hosiery and cool heeled lace up booties.

Even the makeup---with dark goth shiny lips as “it” and peepers that look like they just woke with their makeup kinda on from the night prior…reminds us of that punk era. And Marc Jacobs Grunge for Perry Ellis.

We liked.

THE BIBHU MOHAPATRA FALL/WINTER 2009 COLLECTION

DATE & TIME: Thursday, Feb. 12, 2009
12:15: The Bryant Park Hotel – 25th Floor

Designer Bibhu Mohapatra debuted a capsule collection of 20 looks for his first solo outing since leaving J. Mendel. He’s had to work smart, now that he doesn’t have the mega budget he had at J. Mendel. This involved a great deal of draping and working with muslins and sketching before he made his first cut into the fabrics.

As we arrived early, he took a few minutes to talk to us about his collection and design philosophy.

LM: How are you handling the recession?

BIBHU MOHAPTRA: I tried to keep the prices realistic, giving them a product that is impeccably made with a longer life expectancy.

LM: What was the inspiration?

BM: Three things:
1. The Jap. Warriors from the 15th and 16th century – the look is like a silk and metal armadillo.

2. The artist Hans Hartung – a contemporary of Picasso’s, known for his beautiful canvases of deep colors with spots of color peeking through.

3. Daphne Guinness, who I met at a party. He loved her strong personality and her many collections, among them jewelry and amour.

LM: What do you see her wearing in this collection?

BM: She’d look great in the lacquered black wool coat or the black and silver coin miniskirt.

LM: Designers are cutting back on pricey European fabrics. Who are you buying from?

BM: I love to fabric source. I can do 80 different mills in 3 days at PV [Paris Vision] picking the
best from Europe, China and Japan. One of my favorite resources is Makimura – one of the oldest mills in Kyoto, also used by Dior.

LM: How is your collection different than J. Mendel’s?

BM: The difference with J. Mendel is that this collection is more everyday and day to evening.

FAVORITE PIECE: the resurrected textile from India that made up the dress of peacock feathers and cotton.

This is a designer who's off to a strong star and is in a league with some of the best - Ralph Rucci and Douglas Hannant.

GEREN FORD, FALL 2009

FEMININE CLASSICS TO KEEP FOREVER

MILK STUDIOS- WEST 15th STREET NYC

FEBRUARY 12th, 2009

Words, Images Judith Ecochard

Geren Ford designed by Geren Lockheart, 'upped it' for this Fall collection, full of mod womanly separates in superb soft wools and leathers. And what we think are her signature long scarves in printed silks.

Hailing form LA---we thought the ensembles in largely dark tones puched up with oxblood red and royal blue polka dot--- were decidedly urban sexy…especially the leather vest, ruffled tops, double side zipped front above the knee skirts, and some menswear inspired trousers and oxford button downs made.

As Ford, sporting a terrific haircut –clued us in…she was going for “clean, feminine, texture and volume…70’s, 80’s New York…and classics to keep forever.

One thing we like about this designer is that her clothes would look great on all body types…and that her staff are her fit models.

Ford’s favorite look…that whe would grab for a night out? Ours too…a chic black ruffled coverup.

MAKEUP: Love the makeup by Obsessive Compulsive, a professional line we have covered in our prior The Makeup Show clips. The models were airbrushed to perfection in a natural looking base…but the eyes were all rock and roll with Jet Set black eyeliner atop Ironic Blue eye powder. False eyelashes and a neutral shiny mouth via Latte Lip Gloss finished off the “amazing looks” according to makeup artist Stephanie Flor.

GET IT: David Klasfeldt, an owner of Obsessive Compulsive told us that ROUGE MAKEUP STUDIO carries the line.

Bryant Park Tents, NYC

VALENTINES DAY

Words, Images Judith Ecochard

It was a Barbie world on Saturday afternoon when lots of girls and their moms were smitten with the fab runway looks by the top fashion designers showing their garb during New York Fashion Week.

Our second biggest thrill…Annie Liebowitz---our favorite photographer---in the front row…

And an amazing looking (duh) Heidi Klum sporting a new do’…just in time for the Project Runway finale.

AFRICAN FASHION COLLECTIVE: XULY BET & GRACE JONES

MERCEDES BENZ NEW YORK FASHION WEEK SEPTEMBER 2009

Words, Images Judith Ecochard

It was the first day/night at the famed Fashion Tents in midtown Manhattan and already we felt we had seen the “IT” of what makes a great fashion week…a runway appearance like no other.

The economy might be flatlining but the moods at the African Collective Show soared through the ceiling…and then some… with veteran designer Xuly Bet’s collection. We remember him as hailing from France at some point… and with an eco slant--- using scraps of fabric to conjur up colorful and clever women’s clothes.

The looks we saw last night were more sophisticated, particularly the long knits with Obama’s image…and the men’s looks of well cut blazers and pants.

But really it was the new Grace Jones futuristic black and white video as background that signaled something special was happening…from the opening notes…

So when Alex Wek and Tyson Beckford took the runway…we were clapping away.

But when Grace Jones herself did a runway turn …with all the camp we love her for…we went nuts…as did the rest of the crowd.

We mean…how can you top that?

VALENTINES FOR GUYS: GIFTS THEY’LL ACTUALLY WANT

TIMEX® SPORT WATCHES, NAVITAS CHOCOLATES, ART OF SHAVING

Words Judith Ecochard, Images Courtesy of Respective Companies.

We would cringe big time if we got one of those teddy bears.

So why not give the gifts that are affordable and desirable too?

TIMEX®:
Timex® watches are classics …but the new grouping of watches under the sports umbrella are downright high techy. At the Outdoor Retailer Market, we got a tutorial on the TIMEX®Ironman Race Trainer™ watches for men (and women) that comes infour styles pumped up with heart monitors.

Frankly we were dazzled…as the Ironman Race Trainer series of digital heart rate monitors boasts two-way wireless data transfer via the Timex Data Xchanger USB device. And we quote from the press release so we get it right…

“ A sleek polyurethane digital transmission chest sensor allows a user’s body to sync with the HRM watch to yield precise fitness data over extended training periods. The Timex Ironman* Race Trainer™ digital heart rate monitor and the Timex Data Xchanger USB device, which utilize ANT+Sport™ wireless technology, work as a system to provide online training logs powered by TrainingPeaks™ software.

memory and a five-segment variable-intensity interval timer. The Timex Data Xchanger

Wow.

We also got a preview of the nifty Timex® Expedition WS4 watch that’s loaded with an altimeter, barometer, thermometer, compass, chronograph, timer clock and other critical measurements…on a wide screen dashboard that’s easy to read.

Particularly useful for us…is the activity review mode that graphs our climbs…so cool and PROOF that we scaled the heights.

NAVITAS NATURALS:
“Power foods for the modern lifestyle” is this mantra of this organics food company that only dishes out rich nutrient packed goodies. We tried some of the Cacao Power® chocolate nibs, from Peru…that we could have been added to our smoothies…but we devoured straight out of the bag (4 oz/$6.99).

Why we think any guys will want these treats over the cloying sweet chocolate offerings that seem to spring up like mushrooms for Valentines Day… is because the authentic taste, courtesy of whole beans peeled and partially ground…is delicious. We detected hints of vanilla, honey flowers and a very subtle spicy pepper essence. Yum.

All Cacao products (also in a powder, butter, paste and butter)---are stocked with benefits like iron, magnesium, fiber and anti-oxidants too. As if we needed a healthy excuse.

ASHLEIGH VERRIER AND MacKENZIE-CHILDS ‘INSPIRED IMAGININGS”

WOMEN’S FASHION & HOME DESIGN SHARED AESTHETICS

14 West 57th Street, NYC February 11, 2009

Words, Images Judith Ecochard
SKETCH BY AHSLEIGH VERRIER

One of our favorite designers of glamorous feminine frocks is Ashleigh Verrier—who showed a fantastical Spring 2009 Collection inspired by a posh whimsical take on “Alice in Wonderland.”

So it was a no brainer in a way- for this talented Parsons educated lady to stage several charming installations juxtaposing her garments with the vibrant hand painted home décor tablewear and furnishings in MacKenzie-Childs' Manhattan emporium.

Verrier actually grew up with a table similar to the Train table ensconced front and center in the spacious 57th Street locale…and has it in her Manhattan studio. “So when the owner of the company saw a picture of the table in my studio…” a collaboration was born.

“I’m thrilled to be here,” Verrier says. “We love the people here and since my Spring Collections were inspired by nature motifs and colors, there is a lot of crossover.”

And like Verrier who magically transforms canvas fabric and sparkling Swarovski crystals into a beautifully seamed pink dress…MacKenzie-Childs’ table accoutrements effortlessly mix materials and textures up with elegant hand painted glazes atop the sturdy unglazed terracotta base comprising for example- the re-launched and updated Taylor tabletop collection.

We think the versatile, vibrant MacKenzie-Childs products--- hand-painted majolica ceramics, enamel wear, tiles, and home and garden furnishings--serve as the ideal embellishments comprising fairy tale tableau vivant setting for Verrier’s exquisite creations. We’re glad we got a chance for a second, up close and personal look at the the polished designer's Spring line too.

WHAT’S NEXT: Verrier is honored to be part of the celeb filled Heart Truth runway show kicking off Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in New York on Friday, February 13th. She is dressing Natasha Henstidge who plays Attorney Taylor Wethersby on ABC’s ELI STONE. The dress…A-line, flirty and feminine with hints of 1960’s Catherine Deneuve. DIVINE!!!!

WENGER FOOTWEAR: SPRING AND FALL 2009 MEN’S AND WOMEN’S COLLECTIONS PERFORMS WITH VERSATILE STYLE

KICKERS FOR CROSS OVER COMFORT AND COMBAT

Words, Images Judith Ecochard and courtesy of Wenger Footwear

Boy… were we excited about that first episode of Fox’s action packed series “24.” There was our hero against the evil ones, Jack Bauer scoping out who wasn’t the FBI agent in an early scene that all took place between the hours of 8Am and 9AM. And Mr. Jack knew “he’s not one of ours” to quote FBI Agent Renee Walker- by the dude’s canvas colored boots. So cool…we knew that too.

Because…

Wenger Footwear’s ultimate boot from its Approach line, the Eiger -is the kicker of choice for the elite FBI Swat team--- in black of course.

We don’t know how authentic Hollywood is…but we do know that this lace up boot, as with all Wenger footwear ---has the hardcore Temposit outsole that “contains high traction material that shifts it pliability for climate changes,” ie hardens in cold weather-softens in the heat. The Eiger also has a Hydrofoil 3D bootie membrane that spurns water, and an AIS technology that displaces the feeling of rocks to the outside edges of the shoe-for comfort.

The Rincon, also part of the Approach Collection, has seven layers of “Proactive Safety Technology Insulation” for the ultimate in warmth and waterproofing according to our guide, the super nice Read Worth, a Wenger VP.

Another popular choice with retailers is the Alpina Boot with full grain leather uppers.

In the Performance Athletic Group- the raison d’etre is functional low cut running shoes that work on multiple surfaces. For example, the Wildhaus ($79) is great for long hikes too with a highly breathable suspension mesh upper that’s “fully ventilated,” …a scratch rubber randing articulating the toe and heel…and a PST reflective trim.

The Interlaken model is ticked out with sonic welding that allows guys (and gals…there’s a lady’s version) to wear them without socks. And a one pull speed lacing and trapunto stitching keeps the shape comfy snug.

Lastly, we took in the CROSSOVER Grouping for men and women … a lifestyle collection par excellence that fuses pleasing aesthetics with technical details.

Top picks from this bunch include the Alpen Trapper for guys - a “sharp looking” full grain leather lace up boot with natural shearling lining for warmth. The Lady Trapper has a neat oblique toe and bold metal eyelet details.

The most urbane ped, IMHO is the Chelsea Boot We can see our military buds wearing these with comfort--- as well as our hipster cousins who never venture above Manhattan's 14th Street. The dashing foot covering boasts a full grain upper, a boiled wool trim, and a medial-gore stretch for ease of entry.

Women get their own walkers in a feminine fashion that hark back to the classic Mary Janes …with Wenger'sAlpen Jane .

We also got the 411 on some women’s Spring 2009 styles that are ready to hit retail shelves imminently. Titled the Alps and Chocolate Collections these shoes are excellent transitional peds as we think they're season savvy for year round wear.

The Valais- part of the former group (priced $55-$175), will carry wearers from rock to road with its technology including the Temposite outsole, old world lacing for the ideal fit, and mesh uppers for ventilation. And it looks hipster ready too in the cool looking black shade with red trim.

The Chocolate Collection ($55-$85) a practical assortment of shoes- are stylishly conservative in looks to hard core Carrie Bradshaw fashionistas---- but have the enormous advantage of being one of the few pairs of shoes women could ever possibly own and WEAR----AND that they don’t want to rip off their feet at the end of the day.

The Pollux an easy to the eye, slip-on is a super soft flat that has a slight wedge heel that absorbs and a cushioning foam insole.

TEXTILE BREAKTHROUGHS: COOLMAX® EcoMade, PRIMALOFT®, SYMPATEX®, COCONA®

THE GREENING OF PERFORMANCE TEXTILES

OUTDOOR RETAILER MARKET, SALT LAKE CITY PALACE, UTAH

Words, Images Judith Ecochard and courtesy of companies

The sustainable, eco lifestyle isn’t just buzz in the outdoor apparel market. It’s a mantra. And as consumers, we were excited by all of the new fabrics loaded with the technical attributes we demand in our active and lifestyle wear…emerge from recycled or sustainable sources.

COOLMAX ® EcoMade
Parent company Invista, has been actively generating products from greener sources.

At an industry breakfast, COOLMAX’s leading lights gave the press a heads up on just how involved the process of converting a PET water/soda bottle into usable materials, in this case the COOLMAX® EcoMade filament fiber that can be woven into garments and accessories.

With just 10% incremental costs (wow) and 70% energy savings (double wow), Invista gets 20 ounce plastic bottles from landfills---according to John Haigh, a marketing head for the company…and needs about 14 landscape clutterers to make an XL men’s shirt of 97% post-consumer recycled origins.

Performance wise, the fabric’s unique four channel cross-section keeps the body cool and dry via moisture management par excellence. We’ve used the terrific performance socks by DeFeet and Injinji that started using COOLMAX® EcoMade since last August. We are glad that the textile’s use has expanded into sportswear too.

INFO: COOLMAX® FABRIC

PRIMALOFT®:

We got the 411 on two Primaloft® textiles at OR. PrimaLoft® Eco Footwear is made from 50% recycled content…and has all the superior characteristics of the mothership like superior insulation in wet or dry conditions, breathable and lightweight.

Also introduced was the new PrimaLoft® Infinity, a new continuous fiber filament insulation made for sleeping bags…that has a higher loft without the added weight.

Meaning a higher warmth-to-weight ratio that is very compressible (20% more) and water repellant! We heard that EMS has already ordered Infinity for its sleeping bags…and expect others manufacturer to follow with products for retail.

INFO:PRIMALOFT®

SYMPATEX® TECHNOLOGY
In biz since the mid 80’s, this German company’s recent partnership has spawned a Bionic Finish Eco-a fluorocarbon-free DWR treatment for textiles. Although we didn’t fully grasp the science…Bio-Finish Eco is composed of eco-friendly hydrocarbon matrix forming star-shaped, hyper-branched polymers or “dendrimers.” The latter---invisibly integrates with materials’ membranes and makes them water and dirt repellant, highly water resistant, breathable and mercifully, lasts through many wash cycles.

Many sportswear companies use SYMPATEX TECHNOLGY® in the mix…including Timberland, Nike Golf, and Red Wing Boots…because of its temperature regulating waterproof, windproof, and breathable attributes.

INFO: SYMPATEX

COCONA®

COCONA® is seemingly in every activewear garment from every brand we wear these days. And that’s because this eco textile performs on many, many levels like odor control, UV protection, static resistance, and wick-ability.

We looked forward to finding out what’s new with this company that ingeniously serves up yarns and fabrics made from recycled coconut shells that otherwise would end up in landfills.

The scoop that we got at a rather JAM PACKED Happy Hour…included the new categories for Cocona® like the Cocona Softshell… and fusions with Merino Wool and Pima Cotton.

Basically we took away that Cocona pumps up the other base materials by enhancing the products made with the super properties it has…and then some. Our top plus---it washes/dries PDQ!!!!

SWING AWAY:
We also learned that Cocona, Inc. is currently sponsoring Woody Austin, a ranked PGA Tour competitor...via the athlete's sporting Cutter & Buck golf attire and the men's fav line Dockers---made with Cocona® technology--- at all PGA functions.

And according to a pr release:

"...Woody liked the FlashDry™ performance of Cocona® apparel so well, he decided to start a line of golf clothing using Cocona® technology. The primary item in the Austin Golf Wear line is a Pima cotton polo using Cocona® technology. Woody not only likes the quick drying performance but the great feel of Pima cotton."

Here's hoping that lady Tiger wannabes get some outfits of their own from this comfy AND functioning fabric---in sizes that actually fit and styling that actually looks like we'd wear it to the 19th hole.

VICTORINOX: SWISS ARMY PERFORMANCE DRIVEN MENSWEAR

FALL 2009 PREVIEW MENSWEAR

OUTDOOR RETAIL SHOW, SALT LAKE CITY PALACE, UTAH

Words, Images Judith Ecochard

We ended our second day at OR with a run through of Victorinox Swiss Army's sophisticated menswear collection.

Acclaimed for their multi-functional pocketknives that have been the “namesake of the Swiss Army” the famed business has launched an updated line just in time to celebrate its 125th anniversary.

We were jazzed about the new cyber tool and USB drive with a biometric sensor that encrypts the data and opens via fingerprint identification. Cool.

It’s also impressive that a brand that’s been making tools since 1891---managed a 2008 overhaul of their ‘everyday’ items by adding features like an ergonomic grip, and a dual density handle (plastic/rubber), one hand opening, lock in blade and a Phillips head screwdriver.

FALL PREVIEW:

There were a few key men’s clothing items there---all sportin' the utilitarian vibe of the knives... lightweight, pack-able, technically adorned, and very European urban in style and feel. Which makes sense since the New York based designer, Pierre-Henri Mattout hails from France.

There was a snowboard/ski out fit of waterproof pants and a jacket- that we wanted in an xs…that we later learned was not going to be produced. Bummer.

We did like the shape memory bomber that’s water repellant ($275) that was paired with a water/wind repellant shirt, a boiled wool scarf that comes in a rainbow of multi-color stripes, and a dark rinse organic cotton wool jeans that has a button or zip fly ($195).

Also a go…a down fill jacket (in khaki/olive) with a detachable fur line hood made from a dynamic nano system treated canvas cotton $550). On the mannequin…it was draped over a handsome 100% merino wool Swiss argyle “interga” knit sweater ($265) and a flat front corduroy with 4% spandex for stretch ($135).

A hip blouson, windproof wool jacket with a tightly woven mesh lining…is souped up with hidden interior pockets and nearly invisible vertical outside pockets ($325). This coverall is paired with a reverse stretch jersey sweater ($245) over a traveler’s dream - water repellent cotton/nylon cargo pants…that are wrinkle resistant and breathable.

We can’t wait to see what Victorinox Swiss Army has in store for NEW YORK’s FASHION WEEK. We do know---that mobility and innovation fused with panache will be hallmarks.

THOR LOs® GETS HIP: EXPERIA SOCKS FASHIONABLE HIGH PEFORMANCE

MULTI-TASKING HOISERY STARTS RUNNING

OUTDOOR RETAILER SHOW, SALT LAKE CITY PALACE, UTAH

Words, Images Judith Ecochard and courtesy of ThorLos®

Our ‘briefing’ at the ThorLos® exhibit---was one of the most enlightening conversations we had at OR this past January.

What got our hearts a pumpin’ was the knockout new addition to the company’s functional, activity specific ThorLos® performance hoisery line- (famous for its signature padding) ---- the fashion forward and lightweight EXPERIA socks.

These unisex active wear socks-are available in a bunch of eye popping colors that beg to be seen.

And though Thor Lo® offers various cushion styles/thicknesses, including Medd toesies for foot ailments, these ped coverings are aimed at a youth oriented market---that favors a thinner sock except where they need some extra love…on the heels and on the ball spots. Plus, naturally... breathabilty.

We got to try out a pair in orange -which we learned was not the most popular shade (with the ladies…pink and a nice golfy lime green is)…but certainly matchy matched our Nikes.

The aerodynamic fit via Nylon covered Lycra® and padded CoolMax® areas…assured a smooth glove like and comfy feel with serious moisture wicking properties. Really, we didn’t notice we were even wearing socks, a good thing.

Set to launch (now) at running stores, we think these micro mini crews, tagged "Make your Mark” ---oozes” lots of attitude” noted Jeff Lawson, Marketing Director ---and is a breakthrough for this family run biz. MADE IN THE USA!

And makes sense. Crossover shoes that function as well on a hiking trail as on an urban street---are a given --- for the outdoor apparel industry these days.

It's a natural progression that leaner, more stylish socks cross over into that life style world. And we know plenty of guys who collect lifestyle sneakers---that will LOVE Experia’s darker shades.

SIERRA DESIGNS: CROSSING SPORTSWEAR WITH PERFORMING OUTDOOR APPAREL

SMART DETAILS, FABRICS=NEW TECH

OUTDOOR RETAILER MARKET, SALT LAKE CITY PALACE, UTAH

Words, Images Judith Ecochard

Sierra Designs has successfully merged their technical heritage with a new lineup of warm and eco oriented outerwear…that got retailers, and us…buzzing.

First off we reviewed the new Flex Down™ Jacket that uses the expandable baffle technology used in the company’s sleeping bags. Translated that means that the 750 Fill jacket has a body and upper sleeves constructed so as to eliminate constriction and improve thermal efficiency by hugging the body and eliminating air pockets. ($249)

The Green Effects Program now five years old---includes desirable garments made from the odor resistant, durable knit/all-natural, UPF strong, and sustainable Cocona™ fabric, and recycled poly shell (PET from soda bottles… Primaloft® Eco (down plus 50% recycled polyester), post consumer recycled Climashield™ Green insulation, solvent free laminates, and PVC free seams. Well sourced!

ANd the admirable materials (and there are more not mentioned), fortunately, are made into some of the better fitting, and smart quality apparel out there.

We liked the men’s and women’s version of the hardshell, Cyclone™ Eco Jacket ($189)-that’s waterproof, breathable with a fully adjustable Fast Pack Hood™ that’s helmet compatible, PVC free seam taping, and pit zips. There’s a matching, versatile full zip pants too…and an earbud portal in the jacket’s chest pocket for full coverage that rocks.

For men and women, the Kenosha™ jackets function like stylish wind shirts with Cocona™ lining that wicks away moisture while retaining heat. Pockets are cool too… invisible zipped hand and chest pockets for small keeps.
($100)

There’s also a complete grouping of base layer separates-the Ember ½ Zip, Ember Crew and Ember Pants made from the fast drying Cocona™ fabric that features techy details like extreme stretch, flatlock seams, and thumbholes at cuffs for the tops.

The Barricade™ Hybrid hoody, jacket, vest and pants (with ankle zips and storm flaps)—set to launch in August 2009, are waterproof/breathable pieces courtesy of hard shell Drizone™Green (100% recycled polyester) in exposed areas like the shoulder and chest panels. With sets for guys and gals we are very impressed with the functionality of these layerable separates…that have assorted ex and internal pockets, YKK® reverse coil zippers, earbud portals and can work while climbing, hiking, snowboarding and hiking.

There is also a line up of insulated, waterproof and breathable, seam sealed Booties made from the Drizone™ that “are the best, warmest, most comfortable bootie known to mankind.”

AND THE RAINBOW WORTHY COLOR SELECTIONS ARE THE ON TARGET!!!

We loved the blues---Aqua, Blueberry, Blue Star…and the greens like Reed (a pale green) and Eucalyptus...

BERGANS OF NORWAY, 66° NORTH, KARHU, CRAFT

SCANDINAVIAN CLOTHING, ACCESSORIES AND PERFORMANCE WEAR

OUTDOOR RETAILER MARKET, SALT LAKE CITY PALACE, UTAH

Words, Images Judith Ecochard, and courtesy of company’s websites

The first day at the massive tradeshow was BUSY…but in the late afternoon hours, this section of the convention center-known as the Scandinavian Village---was JAM PACKED.

Well, happy hours were certainly given added meaning at this enclave devoted to some of the world's top brands…

AND the clothes were worth checking out too.

BERGANS OF NORWAY

We have spent time in Norway a few years back. It is a scenic country populated with amazingly good looking people because, IMHO the Vikings killed off the ugly ones.

Bergans of Norway is an acclaimed label over there…and from what we previewed, the collection has ‘the warmth’ factor down cold…with a complete line of down and wool streetwear, skiwear and base layers.

We focused on the more fashionable outerwear separates and liked what we saw…though we think the prominent embroidered script logo may not “work” in this country…as the name does not have the same cachet in the States.

First off a hooded jacket, the SVARTISEN LADY ($650), will ward off the wet and cold, everywhere. Like many Bergans’ items, it is made from a multi layers of fabric (3) with a four way stretch - including a soft outershell made with the 100% waterproof Dermizax™ Toray’s very popular breathable textile. There’s a companion Svartisen pants for head to toe protection.

BERGANS also has a two layer waterproof jacket ($260) and a warm 650 fill down hooded jacket in cool plaids and solids. ($350)

We are most wowed by a sleek technical organic wool hooded car length hooded jacket. With webbed wrist cuffs to keep the nip out, bold silver zippers on oversized outer pockets, and interesting seamed details, we think this covering in creamy white or black- is downright chic.

INFO: BERGANS OF NORWAY

66° NORTH
Keeping Icelanders warm since 1926, 66° is one of the most fashionable and complete performance wear lines we have ever seen…anywhere…including Ralph Lauren’s line which we would never wear for hard core outdoor athletic adventures. Hardwear, soft shell, toasty insulated, thermal and pro mid layers, base layers and accessories are all part of this enormous collection that protects against “the vertical rain” and snow that is characteristic of nature in the north.

The names are tough to ‘get’ though.

IE…a Primaloft® insulated women’s jacket, the Langjokull ($340)…named after a famous glacier (as is most of the line’s items). Dubbed “urban styling meets mountain performance,” this lightweight jacket has a high collar and hood for warmth …and a nifty zipped inner chest pocket. Along with the fitted sophisticated Gola ($240), that’s made with a brush fleece lining along with a wind stopping membrane/ wool blend, ladies now have true techy detailed (like articulated elbows, hand warming pockets) and very hip looking options to wear. And there are men’s versions (cut for a man’s bod) of the aforementioned too.

We also saw a gray/black form fitted Thermal Pro® hooded fleece jacket, the Akrafjall- with Power Stretch® fabric on the sides of the body and undersides of the arms…plus two zipped outer pockets. Yes, this mid layer item technically functions to wick away moisture from the base layers…but we also like the look…and would wear this with our jeans.

Another popular 66° NORTH separate- for men is the hardshell swivel adjustable hooded Glymur jacket (with matching pants) made from eVENT® three layer fabric that serves up great breathability. Pre-shaped elbows and an elongated back, water –resistant side zippers, and venting through pockets with storm flaps guarantee this outerwear athletically fits and functions! ($450)

INFO: 66° NORTH

KAHRU:

“Finland’s legendary running brand,” has the perkiest shades that have wowed the American fashion press.

“The colors are killers,” according to Eric Stoll, Director of Marketing and Creative Services for the brand…which means “bear” in Finnish.

The sneakers function too and prides itself on providing runners with a “Natural Ride & Feel.™” For us this means a quicker lift off our heels, an energy waster, a more natural stride and stability---- thanks to a Hytrel midfoot plate and patented Stable Fulcrum technology.

For fashionista types, the bold progressive styling…rocks.
INFO: KARHU

CRAFT:

“Athletes Meet Atmosphere” is the slogan of this performance based apparel line. It is a step ahead of most base layer collections in that (and we quote) “…they not just wicks to keep you dry but circulates the air and energy.”

We were a bit dazzled truth be told…

Many pieces we saw in this rather huge collection---- are made of a dimpled structured fabric---like the items we saw in the proZEROextreme line of base layers. Many selections also are also made for warmer temps…like the separates that are a mash up, sort of speak- of both proCOOL and Thermolite fabrics. We learned that the hexa-channel proCool that’s next to the skin, draws the moisture away from the skin and the external Thermolite hollow fiber yarn on the outside to draw the moisture out, spreading wetness around for faster evaporation. And they’re all are super stretchy and windproof too.

One piece we liked is a cool looking light weight zipped knit top, the Pearl Move pullover for guys…aimed at ikers With targeted insulation zones and seamless construction (no chafing!) via serged seams, this garment is anti microbial, super soft against the skin via brushed fleece--- and AMAZINGLY---are hot water washable.

Other best sellers include the ProZero Gunde Wind Boxer shorts that ward off the cold at the most basic layer. Made with the Gore-Tex® WindStopper® fabric on the front panel, the garb also has moisture-wicking Pro Zero fabric that keeps for moisture control and warmth.

Needless to say, pro athletes love this line…like Henrik Lundqvist, the NY Rangers supreme goalie.

And we hope to learn more about Craft and its sport specific separates- at next summer’s OR---

LOVE, HOPE, STRENGTH FOUNDATION ROCKS OR

OUTDOOR RETAILER MARKET
SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH

Words, Judith Ecochard

The bi-annual OR Tradeshow is filled with info and $ raising efforts---for many worthy non-profits that focus on environment and fair trade issues.

Also making an appearance this year, right outside the North Face exhibit--- was the Colorado based Love. Hope, Strength Foundation ---founded by leukemia survivors Mike Peters of the Welsh rock band The Alarm and President of CSI Entertainment James Chippendale. LHSF raises funds to create facilities/ buy equipment in needful locales… aimed at early detention… was invited by Highgear...a sponsor of past LHSF events--- to showcase its initiatives.

And to spread the word...especially for people in who have limited if any access to care and/ or information about the deadly diseases that collectively kill millions.

Past fund raisers have included musical gigs by top rockers like the Gin Blossoms, Tokyo Police Club and The Cult…performing live at fund raisers held in unusual spots---think the base camp of Mt Everest, the top of the Empire State building, Manchu Picchu etc.

At the trade show---attendees got to sign and write a message of hope on Tibetan Flags destined for the next jaunt to Mt. Kilimanjaro…to raise funds and spread “to spread the good will and compassion into all pervading space.”

Very cool.

INJINJI PERFORMANCE TOESOCKS: FALL 2009

OUTDOOR RETAILER MARKET, SALT LAKE CITY PALACE, UTAH

Words, Judith Ecochard, Images-J. Ecochard and courtesy of Injinji

We are real hard-core wearers of Injinji socks.

In fact, we got an early preview of a pair of the snowboard specific socks that aren’t even on the market yet…and we had warm toes for many, many hours for the first time in our lives…while shredding the slopes.

Seriously…

Those who stay in shape or connect spiritually-- in other ways--- like Yoga, Pilates mat work, dance and gymnastics…will love the new eco-friendly, absorbent, naturally anti-bacterial NuBamboo socks.

In both the Toe-Less Yoga and Yoga Toesock versions-a slip resistant sole with ‘don’t feel them’ raised treads…offers grips, control, and increased balance while a contoured heel pocket and arch support snugs without constriction…or bunching up.

The Injinji socks come in colors like white black, rust, moss and the Toe-Less Yoga comes in FUN STRIPES too. Ah, the matchy-matchy options.

BIONDA CASTANA LUXERY SHOES&SANDALS ARE EDITORS NEW “IT” PEDS

Words, Images Judith Ecochard

We are lucky ladies sometimes.

Last week, we were able to grab some time to chat with the amazingly talented and lovely Nataila Barberi-half of the duo (with Jennifer Portman) helming the chic shoe collection, Bionda Castana.

This London-based design team may hail from the investment banking and marketing worlds…but they have quickly captured the hearts of posh editorial types with their barely two years old venture in glam accessories.

The results should give all women more than ample reason to treat themselves to these impeccably crafted shoes and sandals made from the finest materials available (buttery leathers, shiny patent, and solid hardware used for studding and oval eyelets). Even the heel shapes are delicate, sturdy and sexy---

Actually, invest might be a better word…as these multi-strapped sandals, boots, pumps and hip booties…are modern classics that are as well made- as well as comfortable. A phenomena not often seen/endured in high heeled kickers.

Plus, we could not believe how every exquisite style had so many color and material options. We were wowed espcially considering this is a fairly new line.

It is really a tribute to the Italian (where else) factory and craftsmen’s deep knowledge…that these shoes are as nice as any that we have ever seen.

Sophisticated beyond belief...

Bravo.

These ladies deserve all of the accolades sure to come their way…and then some. Retailers should stock up.

KURU FOOTWEAR: TRANSITIONAL SHOES FOR OFFICE and OUTDOOR PERFORMANCES

OUTDOOR RETAILER MARKET, SALT LAKE CITY PALACE, UTAH

Words, Judith Ecochard

Images, J. Ecochard and courtesy of Kuru Footwear

Fashionable and footbeds are two words that rarely appear together…let alone function together.

But KURU Footwear manages to fuse the two seemingly disparate entities…with an orthotic type supports embedded in aesthetically pleasing, water and stain resistant uppers, (soft shell, nubuck leather and/or suede)… that give pricey Euro life sneakers some serious competition.

And give hikers some technically snazzy options -with details like contrast over stitching and biomorphic stitched panels of textiles providing visual interest.

WHY YOU CAN WEAR THESE SHOES ALL DAY:
The patent patent-pending KuruSole® Midsole Chassis with Orthotic HeelKradl®–gives wearers heal, lateral stability, and arch support where you need it for an “unprecedented fit.”

COOL STYLES:
Kuru Footwear, based in Salt Lake City---and named after the Finland locale (and we were there---stunning scenery!!!), is an emblematic brand that is inspired by the active lifestyle of Rocky Mountain dwellers--- who might just toil away indoors for a living.

For Fall 2009, there’s a fresh black/tan version of the popular men’s Chicane laceup.

Both women and men get the new Desert Boots- in dark shades-and made of durable suede uppers and a dual density rubber sole that grips the ice and snow.

The Kruzer II—a multi toned shoe gets a bunch of coordinated autumnal shades in its thick, 1.4mm suede uppers. The lace-ups that resemble elegant Oxford shoes- are trail and street tough…and have the forefoot anchor construction that wraps around the foot to provide the user with a solid fit and lateral stability.

A mid rise shoe/boot hybrid…the Cirque mid (men’s and women’s) builds on the original Cirque model by giving the wearer more ankle support and protection against the snow.

GIVING BACK WITH CHOICES:
Kuru Footwear offers a Consumer Empowered Stability program which allows consumers to register their purchase on the its website and then chose from approximately 10 different charities...and in turn, Kuru will donate a percentage of the consumers’ purchase to the charity of their choice

INDIGENOUS: FAIR TRADE + ORGANIC CLOTHES FALL 2009

ARTISAN ECO SEPARATES FOR EVERYWHERE WEAR

OUTDOOR RETAILER MARKET SALT LAKE CITY PALACE, UTAH

Words, Images Judith Ecochard

There’s a reason, season after season, INDIGENOUS Designs nabs the # 1 booth at the Outdoor Retailer Market. We kinda think it’s because this clothing line- made from sustainable fabrics by groups of artisans partisans…has transcended the “label” of “organic” but not necessarily stylish clothes…and really bumped up the whole green category to one of high fashion.

In fact, Indigenous successfully exhibits at major garment gatherings where chic meets street dominate the trendy labels.

We got to see the terrific Fall 2009 collection, guided by Matt Reynolds, President. He was very happy with his year…pointing out that “women’s green wear is still one of the fastest emerging markets.”

“We were born in the outdoor industry…and we’re committed to sustainability, respecting the people who make our clothes, raising their skill level, creating a legacy of a brand…and continuing to stay in and invest back into the community.”

That passion comes through in the quality and the details- lovingly produced by natives men and women---- sourced from knitting and artisan collectives.

WHAT’S NEW:

There’s a lot to like!

In the new Organic Jersey collection, made from 100% organic cotton, the 80’s influence is updated in an oversized Indi Zip hoodie and a delicately ruched scoop neck top with a sweetheart like neckline- that flatters.

In the West Coast collection, the ‘boyfriend’ craze gets a treatment in an oversized Indi Wave Pullover. We also like the thick ribbed Asymmetrical Zip that reminds us of some of the fashion forward designs of Lyn Devon’s Fall 2008 modern women’s armor collection.

For wear everywhere basics, the Postcards category has slim fitting knits in solid deep colors like leaf green, marina blue and ruby. We loved the delicate hand finished edge to the folded collars of the aptly coined Turning Leaf sweater. There’s also a silk organic cotton Eco Hoodie with oversized coco shell buttons --- an item women can wear with everything.

Polish and pizzazz define the Urban Legends collection that would effortlessly fit into any city slicker’s wardrobe. The ones we covet…the Little Knit Dress with a clever sleek shrug built in

and a positively Gigi-esque long ruffle cardigan that’s epitomizes high style feature handicraft accents.

There’s an Uptown grouping of classics that drape perfectly…thanks to the material tencil/ organic cotton. The popular Drape Button Cardigan - that can be belted over leggings…or worn loose…is available in five autumnal tones, including one of our favs teal.

Textures and geometric patterns get a workout in the Novelty Gallery pieces…made of 100% organic cotton and twine that’s been wonderfully hand knit into a plush Hooded Cable Vest and an elegant Hooded Novelty Vest.

Lastly, we previewed some warm luverious knits in the collection named Door to the World. A chunky hooded Mix Knit Coat and a comfy Long Shawl Cardigan made from free range Alpaca hint at their Peruvian origins but are sophisticated enough for urban dwellers too.

END PERFORMANCE FOOTWEAR: AN ‘OUTSIDE’ COMPANY

ENVIRONMENTALLY NEUTRAL DESIGN CAPTURES THE ESSENCE AND THE ESSENTIALS OF WHAT WE NEED ON OUR FEET

OUTDOOR RETAILER MARKET, SALT LAKE CITY PALACE, UTAH

Words, images Judith Ecochard and from END.

With a whole bunch of marathons under our belt…and not a whole lot of cartilage left under our kneecaps, we are picky and paranoid when it comes to our running shoes. We demand our peds give us as much support, cushioning, shock absorption and stability as possible---so as to defer knee replacement surgery until some new scientific cure magically evolves to heal what ails us.

So yes, we were downright charmed by former Nike shoe designer Andrew Estey and his biz partner Ben Finklea -and their sincere green commitment to using sustainable/eco materials in their sneakers- like laces and webbings made from recycled soda bottles, outsoles made from 25% recycled materials “from one mold not the typical 6-8 pieces,” bamboo fibers in the linings, stripped down manufacturing processes using less energy and chemical substances like non-toxic glue, lighter sneakers that need 30-50% less materials PERIOD…and way less packaging too.

But if the shoes were not high performing with “great support, fit and material…” we would not be impressed or inspired to get a pair.

Well, bingo---we demoed the PDQ’s (END kickers have acronym names ie Pretty Darn Quick or the PBnJ très cute)…made specifically for women... and part of the Road Collection.

And it is now our sneaker of choice. Because the END gurus actually took into account a woman’s foot shape, unique body structure and running biomechanics…” in conjuring up ladies sneakers. Not the shrink it and pink it reality of much outdoor performance wear.

In fact, this is the first time a pair of running shoes actually fit rightfully snug around our ankles without an elaborate/deliberate lacing system ensuring a proper fit…because “we took a track and field inspired way to attack heel counter.” Amen.

Other lady shoes include a smart designed LOL (Laugh Out Loud) Water Collection shoe with drainage holes that lets women run through streams and on the beach without socks... and excess sloshing.

Guys get their own version of the aforementioned- the aptly coined WOW (Walk On Water) in a very urban hip black/red trim tones. A 10 oz. Stumptown sneaker-part of the Trail Collection- that’s ideal for runners with a neutral foot strike who like a soft, responsive shoe is also receiving positive retail nods. There’s a more supportive 12 oz. version too.

“We wanted to bring sustainability to the masses in footwear…and challenge the status ethos of too much technology that goes into making a comfy high performance running shoe,” Estey pointed out to us.

Stumptown 12 oz.

Well IMHO—END admirably succeeds.

JANSPORT: EIGHTIES HITS GET REFRESHED AND JOIN THE NOW

OUTDOOR RETAILER MARKET SALT LAKE CITY PALACE

Words, Images Judith Ecochard

JanSport, the decades old traveler/backpack/hauler manufacturing outfitter, now part of VF Outdoor Inc.--- is one of those brands, that like North Face…we see everywhere in Manhattan. On the backs of subway passengers, school kids, office workers etc…even on the torsos of people we are pretty darn sure never venture afar off the “A” train.

We stopped in to see what was set for Fall 2009…and came away with thinking…yeah…this label is going to keep its urban creds.

The durable“Right Pack” classic that’s harkens back to the early 80’s silhouettes are updated in cool plaid yarn dyes and suede bottoms.

JanSport produces more technical gear also. In the Outdoor 2.0 Collection, “Biovent ™ Technology”-that’s proprietary to the company is going into packs for an April launch…and guarantees an ideal fitting, ergonomic back panel that’s super light weight and allows the air to circulate.

Eye-catching outdoor daypacks like the Odyssey, Agave, and Jepson styles in great new prints and colors…are also hipster ready. We also think outdoor athletes will love these carriers…as they have all the bells and whistles mountain men and mamas require.

ISIS: SLEEK, PLAYFUL AND SOPHISTICATED FOR FALL 2009

FITTED WARMTH, THOUGHTFUL DETAILS=A POLISHED COLLECTION

OUTDOOR RETAILER MARKET, Salt Lake City Palace

WORDS, IMAGES JUDITH ECOCHARD

ISIS is a women’s collection of clothing that can “fit” into the many categories of a modern woman’s wardrobe. Everyday wear, work wear, performance wear, travel clothes etc.

It is curious to us---we didn’t know the brand prior to last August’s OR tradeshow. But since then we’ve noticed the signature ISIS star icon subtly embroidered on coats, skirts etc…of many female subway passengers here in the Big Apple.

So we admit---guess we were unawares…but strongly agree that ISIS “is moving in an awesome direction,” according to Pam Bates, our guide to Fall 2009’s lineup.

Hands down, the star of this Fall 2009 collection - we feel- is the stylish "Slipstream Jacket" (part of the aptly named Warmth Collection). The toasty 800-fill down outer piece has an intricate zig- zag quilting pattern that makes this garment chic, not Michelin Man, while the nylon facing and velvet lined collar…will keep a wearer dry and warm ($229). Nice job…it reminds us of pricier collections like Moncler.

In fact, warm outerwear?performance wear that FITS is an ISIS hallmark. We think the refreshed, fitted 650-fill down "Snow Queen"-in gray –that's kitted up with seven pockets, including a hidden zipped one, a detachable faux fur banded hood, fabric covered buttons and again, a flattering profile courtesy of the thoughtful quilting pattern- will be the retail favorite.

And ISIS deft use of bold color and ethnically inspired prints gets a fashionable turn with the now 10 years old 350 gram, 650-fill "Niobe" down jacket that comes in four solid tones with a printed lining…or two print options with a solid lining.

This collection also has one of the more practical and pack-able jackets we saw- that can go from the backwoods to back offices; the updated “Whisper” that comes with its own stuff sack. The “Dahlia” a reversible, gloriously printed (looks hand painted) jacket ($149) or vest ($129), also travels well. We liked the invisible fleeced line pockets ourselves, as our hands are always cold.

The swirled star pattern embroidery of the Thinsulate enhanced “Northern Light” hooded city length coat….is eye catching too. But like most ISIS separates…it’s the details…like the fleeced lined body, the nylon reinforced seat “so it doesn’t catch”…that make the line special.

ECO ALERT: The “Tengo Frio” (very cold) jacket (in a powerful RED here) is buttery soft with an outer shell made from 100% recycled polyester, boasts a fleece line collar, and isprimed to ward off the cold with the new eco Primaloft fabric. ($199)

DR JULES-Jacques NABET: REVOLUTIONARY SKINCARE FOR ANTI-AGING

COSMECEUTICAL TREATMENTS THAT REVITALIZES and SMOOTHS

WORDS JUDITH ECOCHARD

Dr. Yan Trokel- the Maxillofacial and Cosmetic Surgeon maestro of the very effective “Y Lift” is one of those opinionated professionals who’s opinions we actually respect.

So when Dr. Trokel told us to stop by his office to meet a colleague he respects, the Parisian Cosmetic Surgeon Dr. Jules-Jacques Nabet who has “worked with anti-aging hormones for a long time”--- we said “oui”.

Dr Nabet has launched a revolutionary skincare line composed of 'premium' quality ingredients like essential amino acids, vitamins, sea collagen, and interestingly enough (and it makes perfect sense) phyto-hormones (“vegetal hormonal precursors of soya Yam and Vitamin F) that are delivered deep into the dermis via an enzyme carrier. We were told this eponymous collection is currently for sale exclusively at Harrods in London…and that a USA launch sometime in the summer---was in the works.

Yes, we were curious.

A bit of our conversation got lost in translation but we were impressed with the list of good for you goodies that are in the creams and serums. For example, the popular sellers across the pond include the Zen Attitude Serenity Care Cream (to tighten and preserve the suppleness of the skin) and the Revitaxin Cream that contains Hyaluronic Acid (that is a “quick fix” via “Regeneration of the skin tissue and fibroblasts, Stimulation of collagenesis…and Hydration).

“My concept is to provide ‘cosmetic surgery at home’…for the patient that doesn’t want cosmetic surgery… and the patient that wants to extend the positive effects of plastic surgery” explained Nabet.

“Topical application of the hormones estrogen and progesterone (or their chemical equivalents) will change things at the molecular level.”

Given the buzz on hormone replacement therapy---the “natural” kind---we think the “exterior approach” makes just as much sense as an “interior approach.”

Other treatments in this skincare line-which is priced at the high end of topically applied products like “La Prairie” …target the puffiness and skin texture under eyes (Eye Contour) and cellulite (Slimness Emulsion Slimming Act).

We liked the pump aluminum bottle that the Zen Attitude Serenity Care Cream came in…as we tried a bit right then and there. The light cream (really a thick lotion) sank in greaselessly (YEAH) and was barely scented.

Time will tell if our skin tightens up after three months of 2x daily application (the recommended ‘dose’). Long-term benefits would be FABULOUS---though we have to say we were visibly impressed with how our skin glowed…immediately.

If there is valid scientific evidence that backs up the purported positive effects of this skincare line and its cellular aging rewind… in a matter of speaking…Dr. Jules-Jaques Nabet’s skincare line will be HUGE!

Amsterdam, Holland – the shopping district

SHOPPING TRIP
Everyone living in New York City knows that America is on sale, but we wondered if that applied to the European countries too, where everything seemed shockingly expensive- starting with the $8 cappuccino we bought at Charles De Gaulle Airport.

Once in Amsterdam, we dedicated Sunday to hitting the shops on the main shopping drag. The usual high street players were there[Zara, H&M] were there but it was River Island that boasted the most on-trend pieces for a price.
RIVER ISLAND
This high street retailer is in expansion mode. The new, two-story Amsterdam shop represents the entire collection and is a strong step in this brand's continued expansion. According to a recent article in British Vogue, “There are already 210 stores in the UK and Ireland and 25 franchise partnerships in six countries including Turkey, Poland and the Middle East.” Next up - a new shop opening shortly in Rotterdam.

BEST IN STORE: the day-glo accessories [selling briskly] and a pair of high waisted dark denims in the newer wider leg coming in at 52 Euros [@$70].
WE BOUGHT: a pink Day-glo patent leather belt with a gold buckle for 25 Euros[@ $30]
THE TREND: A play on the Steven Sprouse/Marc Jacobs limited edition bag with Day-Glo graffiti.

We passed on the jeans, and found a more modestly priced pair for 19 Euros, at one of the many blowout sales in the district.

THE BIG DISCOVERY: BROTHER & SISTER TEAM – MARCIA VAN OERS & BOB VAN OERS –
A Local contact put us in touch with Marcia, a model thin brunette who’s representative of the new breed of fashionista – she does PR, writes fashion copy for Dutch magazines, helps manage her brother’s modeling career. In addition, she is a talented photographer with a very editorial style. She’ll be going to work further training her editorial eye when she goes to assist Jeroen Snijders, the Netherlands most famous catwalk photographer.
To see some of Jeroen’s catwalk images, visit his official website,

BOB VAN OERS: is [thanks in part to Marcia] an up and coming Dutch model who’s got the clean cut good looks that photographer Bruce Weber regularly casts in his Abercrombie & Fitch campaigns and Vogue Italia editorial photo shoots. His career started when Marcia took a Bruce Weber/Abercrombie & Fitch style head shot of him and sent it to TONY JONES MODEL MANAGEMENT, Holland’s top men’s modeling agency. It didn’t take long for the Amsterdam based Agency to snap him up. Bob’s growing his book shooting all around Europe, most recently on a shoot for Calvin Klein.
OUR PREDICTION: It won’t be long until we see Bob walking the runways Stateside, in New York.

HIGH SIERRA: BAGS & CARRYALLS FOR URBANITES AND ATHLETES

USER FRIENDLY NEW DESIGNS, COLORS AND SIZES FOR FALL 2009

OUTDOOR RETAILER MARKET, SALT LAKE CITY PALACE, UTAH

Words, Judith Ecochard Images---High Sierra and J. Ecochard

We were very, very impressed with all things High Sierra at the Summer OR Show…a huge, affordable brand taking care of our need to haul our lives from one place to another.

As soon as we walked into the Winter Booth last month, our eyes fell on the bestseller, “Fatboy” ($29.99) that now comes in re-freshed colors like green and white. Details including a padded laptop sleeve, s-shaped shoulder strap with cell phone holder, lots of inner compartments...and rubber tabbed zippers... are just some of the cool gizmos that make this pack number one.

Other hip toned haulers are in the wear your technology category-like the Detour ($59.99)…meaning iPod friendly controls on the outside.

New for Fall 2009 is a lineup of techy packs featuring an internal hydration reservoir sleeve and an insulated tube pocket on the shoulder strap that keeps water from freezing. One example, the Amazon Spire 2500, a single contoured aluminum frame bar comfortably adjusts to the shape of the back…and adjustable webbing on the tops and bottom allows for diagonal ski carry.

Plus, these packs have mesh nettings that can zip out to hold a helmet in addition to large zipped outer compartments.

The Guide 3200 is a technical pack that anyone carrying a load will want. It has a removable rain pouch that covers the entire bag in nasty weather, an internal frame with an Ergo-Fit™ shoulder harness for adjustable load lifts, and is hydration friendly too. A large inner mesh bag holds a shovel blade while dual side pockets hold water bottles.

Fashionistas will love the new, sleek luggage line of Drop Bottom Wheeled Duffels made of durable Dupont Teflon and with corner guards to protect the edges. Plus corner mounted wheels keeps the baggage from bouncing around while the inner mesh pockets, hold down straps, and additional zipper outer compartments keep contents organized. Amazingly, the bag can be wheeled, used as a duffle…or as a backpack thanks to a Flexoshell Feather-Lite compression molded back panel that protects the bag’s contents without adding unnecessary weight. ($239.99).

Our top pick though goes to the genius one big system (Pro Series) that unzips into three separate bags…leaving travelers with check-in options…and the ability to pack/ separate clothing functions too. SO smart given the baggage fees slapped on by airlines...and obviously crafted with athletes in mind. Makes sense since the company is the official supplier of bags and luggage for the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Team.

What’s also cool is that the three components stand alone…with a split duffel, a 32 inch deluxe wheeled bag, and a removable daypack. Look for this ‘system’ to hit retail shelves in August 2009.

Lastly we saw the well priced new Wheeled Double Adjustable Ski Bag…that holds 2 pairs of skis in separate padded compartments and has hold down straps for poles. There’s a zippered front accessory pocket, an adjustable “Adjust-A-Strap” system, and ergonomic molded tow handle for ease/comfort of movement, plastic molded rub rails to protect the bottom of the bag,.. and inline skate style wheels with corner protectors that’ll survive those automated baggage systems ($99.99). There’s a snowboard version too that’s definitely on our Christmas Wish List.

BLUE CANOE: ORGANIC BASICS FROM WORKOUT TO WORK IT- FALL 2009

AFFORDABLE EASY WEAR, HIGH STYLE SEPARATES

OUTDOOR RETAILER MARKET, SALT LAKE CITY PALACE, UTAH

Words, Images Judith Ecochard

We have been meaning to review the organic basics from BLUE CANOE for two years now…but seem to keep missing their booths at the NYC tradeshows.

We fast tracked it over to the “Grand Ballroom” section of this Rocky Mountain confab asap… so as not miss the lineup THIS TIME...

After all, with a mantra of “…never leave your comfort zone...” we think this company must psychically know about our work at home wardrobe featuring ancient heavy metal rock concert tees...and sniffed out our need to upgrade to more adult (comfy) garb so as not to scare the neighbors.

Immediately, we fell head over heels in love with a wear everywhere ¾ sleeve wrap dress made from a hang perfect blend of bamboo/organic cotton/spandex. For $90 we cannot think of a more versatile dress to glam up or throw on with our flip flops. Love the color options too…especially a cornflower blue...a Spring 2009 color.

Laurie Dunlap, the industrious Founder and President of the company was nice enough to show us some of her favorite items (like choosing your favorite child????)…

For Fall 2009 there’s an ‘Energy Flow’ group…which includes a sexy “Athena” top in autumnal colors like mauve, burnt orange, and cognac. Made from a blend of organic bamboo, organic cotton and lycra…this separate boasts great shape retention AND a silky feel.

In the “Studio Cotton” group which debuted for Spring…there’s a one button jacket made from a soft organic terry blend…that has just the right touch of polish with two button cuffs and a ‘slanted’ wide wrap collar.

And a tunic length sexy twist top with shaped cups render the neckline downright flattering on all body types...as does a ballet neck version.

Also brand new for Fall 2009 is a neat pair of pants that have shell buttons on the bottom…providing a harem pants style when engaged.

But really, instead of rockin’ the casbah or Hammer time…the pants are made for yoga enthusiasts who stand on their heads…and want their coverings to hold their poses too.

Intimates and Workout Wear pieces round out the line…and if one lives in warm climes…we can see how Blue Canoe could outfit one’s bod from dawn to lights out.

AHNU: ENGINEERED FOOTWEAR FOR ON AND OFF THE TRAIL Fall 2009

CROSSOVER APPEAL IN PEDS FOR A BALANCED LIFE

OUTDOOR RETAILER MARKET SALT LAKE CITY PALACE, UTAH

Words, Images Judith Ecochard and from Ahnu’s Facebook Page

It’s funny…residing in a fashion forward urban metropolis on weekdays. Some of us do teeter around in heels part of the time, all the time (and look rather fetching Ha HA)…but as a city of FAST walkers, Big Apple dwellers ALSO demand comfort, support and performance in their shoes. Urban hikers if you will…so tourists, stop clogging up the sidewalks.

But we digress.

YES----Kickers that work in multi-environments to match up with our multi tasking, crackBerry lives are a must.

Cause once you’ve been to ‘the other side’---meaning wearing a great looking and fitting shoe that doesn’t make you want to rip them off at the end of our day, you’re hooked.

We were flooded with our brain cells all colliding after previewing the AHNU lineup of women’s and men’s shoes and boots.

Based in California...and now owned by Deckers…Ahnu is a brand with an outdoor fitness vibe. The company is rightfully proud of its “Neutral Positioning System Philosophy” that hits the list of desirables…cushioning, stability, traction grip, comfort, durability…in different doses- depending on the activity.

WHAT WE SAW:

The new Montclair boot in an “in” quilted preppy plaid pattern has garnered lots of print. We like the ease of slipping on a warm, fleece lined boot with a big zip we can operate with our gloves on. Its waterproof, has a compression molded EVA midsole, arch support…and a super thick rubber “cross directional” outer sole that grips. ($130).

Other popular options that retailers were ordering include:

Terra Linda trail runner, a cross train running shoe ($100) created for women on a women’s specific last, and the Mary J style Kick and Ginny.

And for men, the Firetrail XTR, a cross terrain running shoe… and the Reyes styles were getting the nod.

But we actually thought the handsome Drake model has a lot of cross over appeal---especially for office dwellers and travelers who want one shoe that does it all. We wonder if this item will get shelved in the "right" retail environment...

The guys we hang with do not suffer for beauty...but care more than we thought they would...about what goes on their feet.

WHAT ELSE WE LOVE:
AHNU is a socially responsible company…its factory “sets the gold standard for labor practices…with a SA8000 Certification.” The company uses recycle please minimalist packaging, sustainable materials (hemp, charred bamboo)…and founder Jim Van Dine has even lectured at Stanford U on the entrepreneurial and sustainable biz slice of things.

FLOJOS®: HANGIN’10 WITH HIP FLIP FLOPS

“KICK INTO FUN- SLIP INTO STYLE”

OUTDOOR RETAILER MARKET, SALT LAKE CITY PALACE, UTAH

Words, Images, Judith Ecochard and from company website

It was seriously snowing outside…but reviewing the ‘upscale’ flip flop collection by Flojos…got us thinking sand and big blue waves.

The collection…that started in the surf world …is enormous. What unites the styles are the padded inner sock for cushioning and durable rubber outsole…that allows wearer to keep these kickers on for hours.

“Comfort is key,” according to Mike Tsoi…our host at the booth…”and the style is trendy.”

And with kicker groupings like Seaside Chic, Shoreline Casuals, Island Style and Kids…there is a sandal for everyone and every occasion.

We immediately fell in love with the animal prints (zebra, jaguars) for women…so chic and… retails for $18-$19.

At the higher end of Flojos price range, the leather uppers Nina ($39) and adorable Roxanne ($50) options…with a flower embellishment …are perfect for urban sidewalks as well as ocean side locales.

The pop color solid thongs in the Fiesta line ($16) are annual bestsellers. And the soon to launch glitter thong in metallic shades are great for those with pedicured toesies.

Guys will covet the Big Kahuna collection…with flip flops like the leather uppers Hummer ($30) and the Hip Tide ($51) choices fitting in effortlessly into their LA formal attire street wear.

LORIS DIRAN: BOUTIQUE DEBUT-

DAPPER MEN’S AND CHIC WOMEN’S PRE-SPRING COLLECTIONS

Words, Images Judith Ecochard

Quel Surprise!!!

For us that is. The last time Loris Diran was on our radar was at a fire hazard worthy, packed men’s collection outing at Nat Sherman in midtown Manhattan, several NY Fashion Week’s ago. A fab time…but we had a hard time seeing the clothes.

Well, the man as a DESIGNER has evolved. Frankly, we were a bit blown away (in a good way) by the level of craftsmanship, deft use of the finest fabrics (from the ne plus ultra Italian Dormeil Mills), and frankly, the practical nature of the perfectly cut collection that was on display today…and now for sale.

Diran is eminently quotable...so we opt for a stream of consciousness review. Some gems:

About the slim silhouette Men’s Collection….

“Everything emulates from the Mod, 60’s period…it make me feel great…a chic place without being clowny.”

“The clothes are more understated…the fit and fabric speaks for itself.”

“The pants ride low on the hip…the shirts have amazing cuff details…the palette is decidedly mute so men want to buy this black suit…look great and feel his safety net…and then buy unusual things.”

“People adore the black and white shirt…pre-washed for a broken in quality…and is skinny fitting--- to wear with suits or jeans, a tie and pointy boots or sneakers.”

“Men’s bodies are changing…they’re taller and the worked out, pumped up 80’s and 90’s thing is not fashionable…healthy without bulk is.”

“My jacket has a 28 inch center back that hits the hip right.” (Not weird shrunken jackets WHO WORE THOSE ANYWAY -us)

“My niche is men in their late 20’s to late 40’s.”

“I ask…how does this become chic?”

Best advice received= ”…just do what you’d wear.”

WE LOVE: The fabrics are sumptuous-like a handsome grey cashmere twill tailored into a dress up/dress down blazer. Our top pick for details is the black sports blazer, lined with striped cotton shirting. Amazing.

HEY LADIES:

“The women’s RTW is elegant with an edge…elegance on the left side.”

“This is the pre-spring collection with heavier fabrics in a rich palette of black, burgundy and magenta.”

“Menswear inspired tailoring in cashmere wool…in a suit with a little flair…” (WE WANT!!!)

“The bubble skirt in silk cotton is the most ordered item.”

“Look at the way the fabric falls and drapes---it has to be something that stands up on its own, away from the body.”

“My women are like Noelle (the effortlessly stylish Director of Operations Noelle Kahan)…strong, feminine, smart, beautiful and understands the power of keeping physically fit…maintains her identity…the dress should never wear her.”

“Self aware but not self obsessed.”

WE LOVE: The petal/blossom like bodice-with subtle boning- atop a Mad Men worthy silhouette-in the Red Carpet knockout of a strapless cocktail dress. Hence the Nouveau Blossom moniker.

The feminine and professional pinstriped wool cashmere suit (Noelle wears the trousers) and a sleek black tuxedo ensemble are positively posh - modern classics.

We cannot wait for the Urban Armor themed Fall 2009 Collection.

DESIGNER INFO: We must have known Diran in our youth…teenager in New York, half French, into 1970’s glam (Ziggy, New York Dolls?). His high-end tastes and refined sensibilities were honed at legendary design houses- Claude Montana, Chanel and Versace. We love Jacqueline Love’s line when he was there too (2004-2005)…

CELEB CRED: Beyonce Knowles, Ricky Martin, Jonathan Rhys Meyer, Nicolette Sheridan.

LORIS DIRAN BOUTIQUE: 3 East 1st Street right off Bowery…a spacious light filled retail establishment inspired by mid-century Italian modernism. Ah…the hand crafted Venetian glass chandelier (Camer), backlit mirrors, and varied textures throughout---are wonderful examples of minimal chic with a dose of European warmth…inviting not sharp, sterile industrial.

SKINCARE WINNERS FOR A OUTDOOR ATHLETES:

MISSION SKINCARE™, BADGER, BEYOND COASTAL

OUTDOOR RETAILER MARKET, SALT LAKE CITY PALACE, UTAH

Words, some Images Judith Ecochard and from company websites

The performance clothes and gear might get heartbeats pumping…but the skincare products that exhibit at this tradeshow…can generate “wow” comments too…and are a huge part of this industry.

And we don’t mean just last minute impulse buys.

No lectures needed given the increased rate of skin cancer…

MISSION SKINCARE™
Serendipitously, we were stopped in our tracks, literally, at the MISSION SKINCARE™ “Athlete-Engineered Skincare™ booth.

The line up of six basic product groups, handsomely packaged-has been tested and meaningfully so... some of the world’s top athletes…including soccer’s Mia Hamm, NBA player Steve Nash and snowboarder Gretchen Bleiler who favors the hydrating Sweet Vanilla Lip Balm SPF15-that she “created.” ($3.99)...CO-FOUNDED THE BRAND!!!!!!

The latest ‘name’ to jump on board with input- is tennis great Serena Williams who smashed through her opponents at the recent Australian Open wearing the super charged aloe based clear Revive Gel ($12.99) and the greaseless AND anti-sting Daily Offense SPF 30 Stick ($8.99).

Okay…we know that hope in a jar claims often leave us out a few bucks with less than desired results…and sunburnt.

But we tried the bestselling Anti-Friction Cream ($12.99) on our feet when we hit the slopes riding. Engineered to prevent chafing, cracking and chapping from skin-to-skin or skin-to-gear contact, the healing moisturizing cream absorbed immediately. One plus.

Another Plus…

… though our regular face plants reflect our skill level (or lack thereof), the fact that our peds were rash free and felt dry –they’re usually desperately need TLC after 6 hours on the powder packed Rockies…reflect just how good this Mission’s high performance goodie is.

THE HEAD HONCHO: Josh Shaw---he of the TV reality show-Apprentice 4 ---in 2006.

ATTRIBUTES: “Breakthrough technology, vitamins, minerals, and anti-oxidants…and…preservative-free, irritant-free, and animal-cruelty free.”

WE APPLAUD: MISSION SKINCARE supports charities of its athletic partners.

RETAIL: Foot Locker, Lady Foot Locker, Champ Sports, City Sports and Performance Bicycle

INFO: MISSION SKINCARE

BADGER:

We love this line of healing balms that has a slew of USDA certified organic (99%-100%) products on retail shelves. We are partial to the Sore Joint Rub ourselves…loaded with powerful arnica (soothes muscles, joints) and black pepper extracts (circulatory stimulant). Now available with in a gift set too-with the original and cooling blends ($19.99).

And it smells like the real deal too…as “the ingredients are minimally processed so that the natural vitamins and entire botanical aromas are still intact.”

“You are really smelling the real deal,” a Badger devotee noted. She is a regular user of the Mind Balms (Headache, Stress Soothers)-an affordable aromatherapy-that now comes in a handy gift set. ($16.00)

Widely available…the Badger SPF 30 Sunscreen (60% organic ingredients) is popular with families too…as the broad spectrum sunscreen is safe for all ages.

INFO: BADGER

BEYOND COASTAL:

We were demo-ing a slew of winter gear on a sunny spring like day …when it dawned on us that our SPF 15 sunscreen was not going to protect us against high altitude rays. Luckily, Beyond Coastal a line of sun care products, had set up a booth with samples of their fragrance free, oil free, paraben free…and water and sweat resistant sunscreens.

We opted to try the “Natural Sunscreen”-composed of micronized natural actives like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide for broad spectrum protection (SPF 30). The cream felt light on the skin and didn’t leave us mask-like.

And our skin wasn’t all dried out at the end of the day either…with jojoba, algae extract and shea butter as healing ingredients.

Beyond Coastal also has suncreens formulated specially for kids, surfers (or anyone on the water) and also comes in a handy tin…which we will be sure to try on a mountain trek.

BEYOND COASTAL

CODA: When we got back the The Big Apple, we felt our visage needed some soothing anyway. We got our skin back with help from Denise De Giulio (212 957-0777), a licensed medial aesthetician who took her time to analyze our facial needs/craves…and applied a rejuvenating and healing assortment of high-end Sothy products to get the red out .

MOUNTREK: TEXTURED AND METALLIC WARM WEATHER BOOTS Fall 2009

POSITIVELY CHIC AND PRACTICAL KICKERS FOR COLD CLIMES!

Outdoor Retailer Market, Salt lake City Palace, UTAH

Words, Images Judith Ecochard

Hats off to the clever person(s) who sourced the très haute quilted metallic fabrics that made their debut on the low, mid and high boots…at Mountrek.

Yeah, the boots have a few techy bells and whistles too…after all, this is a company known for its performance driven outdoor footwear for hikers and water rippers.

So, yes, the boots have genius bottom curves that encourage a natural motion gait.

And a gridded sole that disperses snow and mud…. and grips the ice assuring a non-slip toe to heel stride.

And they’re 100% waterproof…and insulated, often with Primaloft. Cozy.

YEAH, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

We were rockin’ the uppers though. We also covet the multi-textured pebble croco boot collared with a boiled wool... (textile imported from Italy…where else?).

Prices are easy too…typically $59-$89.

Look for Mountrek at Paragons (NYC), Cabela’s, Belks, Pass Pro Shops and online.

FACTOID: Mountrek is owned by JMLAR-a confab of terrific shoe/accessories companies like The Frye Company, Coach and Calvin Klein Footwear and RJ Colt.

FLEXIBLE WARDROBE OPTIONS FOR WOMEN FALL 2009
"LIVE THE LIFE YOU'VE IMAGINED"
Outdoor Retail Market, Salt Lake City Palace, UTAH

Words, Images Judith Ecochard

We were/are embarrassed…not only were we late for our appointment with Stonewear Designs® (exhibiting in the Climber’s Section, appropriate for a Boulder based design biz founded by women climbers))…but we did little prep work on the line too. Bad.

But we got an education worthy of any Ivy League bound senior smarty, we are happy to say…and really think the colorful (prints and solids), easy wearing, mix and match garb of this twelve plus year old collection…is spot on for what women want.

Meaning multi-tasking wardrobe options that can keep up with the lives they lead.

And are flattering for all body types.

And made in the USA!!!!

“It all began with fun, cute tops…like ‘The Twister Top ($44),’" according to Director Kitty Bradley. Made for full figured gals who need bra-like support…this sexy top can be worn alone as a basic (leisure) and under a blazer (for work). And it’s made from 90% organic cotton (YEAH) and 10% spandex for hold.

We absolutely loved the other tank options too…”The Dryflex® Double Cross Top ($42),” “The Momentum Tank ($46)” and “The Lyra Top ($48)”…both feminine, supportive and quick drying/moisture wicking basics for “workout to dinner out.”

One of the most elegant items we saw at the entire show---is the Sojourn Jacket ($98)…with slimming princess seams that skim the body---ending with a subtle tapered flair at its mid thigh length hem. Made from the new luxurious wool-like but washable Ponte Roma fabric, this item is practically wrinkle free from what we could see…and with the companion Sojourn Tunic ($98) and Sojourn Trouser ($90)- makes packing for a long weekend AND looking pulled together… idiot proof.

Other things to love about Stonewear Designs® include the Lola Hoody" in Mulberry ($64) made from super soft micropoly fabric with 4 way stretch…and thumb holes for additional warmth.

The versatile French Terry/Nylon/Lycra “Nimble Skirt ($58)” slips on ...but manages to drape well (not cheap looking) thanks to a drawstring waist, 1 inch side panels with detailed stitching, and a double stitched hem.

There’s a lot to be said for this well priced line…the details and construction of the pieces are usually found on garments that cost a whole lot more.

NICE.

OFF THE BEATEN TRACK: WOMEN’S FOOTWEAR AUTUMN/WINTER 2009

FASHION FRIENDLY FUNCTION HITS THE ROAD IN MARCH

Outdoor Retailer Market, Salt lake City UTAH

Words, Images Judith Ecochard and from company website.

Hard core gear-head brands still dominate the aisles of this huge tradeshow-but the crossover hits of lifestyle performance shoes are earning their Nielsen ratings-for retailers and producers.

One new brand that arrived last week-is the feminine and funky women’s shoe line, “Off The Beaten Track.

Ensconced in a campy RV, the collection of travel inspired footwear “brings the ‘off the beaten’ mentality to life,” according to a press release quoting Amy Gallagher, Marketing Directing for the brand. “People are hungry for self expression and footwear that explores culture as well as fashion.”

We saw some Spring and Autumn 2009 styles that fit the good looks/good comfort category …while rocking “The Destination Is The Journey”-by naming the kickers and colors after cities and regions… here and afar.

For Spring, one chic model is the leather thin strap wrapped Libia flat in summery shades like Canary Yellow and New Orange. And although we are not the no heel types when we are in urban environments, we can see the leather Portsmouth taking wearers over ancient cobblestones and modern concrete with some pizzazz and comfort thanks to anti fungal footbeds!

It’s the Autumn collection that we really fell in love with, however…maybe cause there’s more shoe to admire…and we got more opportunity to appreciate the high-end details (quality materials, contrast stitching, subtle and solid hardware embellishments, cool logo)…that go into this reasonably priced line.

Top picks from attendees include the Johnston in Amazon –with thin cross leather ankle straps that kinda conjure up a Prada-esque interpretation of a riding boot. Though we were so NOT channeling Prada at this show.

Another hot pick…is the popular lumberjack plaid and moccasin themes that are fused in the Holland flat bootie in Tuscany.

Look for the OTBT to hit retail shelves in March…

BACKSTORY:
The line is designed by the Venice, Italy based Maurizio Celin, a veteran shoe designer who has cobbled for many fab brands…including Nine West, Renée Lezard, Sergio Rossi, Santoni, Enzo Angiolini and Franco Sarto.

OTHER FACTOIDS:
OTBT is a child of parent Consolidated Shoe Company…as is the hip line Palladium. Packed with men’s styles that guys will wear ---ie. in earthy colors-- this collection earned major face time when Will Smith wore the hard core “Baggy” boots in Otan (a muddy army green -$82)---- in the hit flick “I AM LEGEND.” KICKERS for fighting "the infected" evil ones!!!!

CARVE DESIGNS: INSPIRED COLD WEATHER WEAR

NEW AND FRESH BASICS IN ECO FABRICS FALL 2009

Words, Images Judith Ecochard

We discovered the feminine flirty garb by Jennifer Hinton and Thayer Sylvester, women surfers who found their clothing options limited UNTIL they started their own…while strolling the aisles of the Summer OR show last August.

One too cool surfboard latter…that’s a work of ART really----we were curious to see what was in store for Fall 2009…given the beachy vibe of the warm weather collection.

Well. Two Thumbs Up ladies.

Inspired by “urban hikes” the lineup is set to hit stores in July 2009…but we wanted to wear it now.

As usual, the separates are comfy, well made, in colors we want (Deep Sea Blue, Aubergine Purple, Glacier Gray, Chocolate Brown, Spruce Green, Black, Rose, Persimmon Orange etc.) and composed of stretchy soft textiles including organic fabrics and sustainable bamboo.

HIGH POINTS:

The High Points Collection (yup, we’re clever) has an updated side ruched long sleeve crew neck tee…that flatters all body types and is long enough (thank-you) for our low waist denim. The HP lineup also has a sueded stretch jersey tunic, hoodie, jacket and skirt at affordable price points $48-$78.

An everyday option cut from an organic fabric includes a Sunshine Pontelle Tee ($48) with an eye catching front placket and five faux pearl buttons. We like this top in the Rose Pink---a wonderful shade that works on all skin tones.

We also could see ourselves wearing the best selling Torfino V-Neck hoodie $58- (95% organic cotton/5% spandex)---and its new companion piece, the Torfino Raglan Crewneck ($52) everyday…

Cords seem to never go out of style, and Carve Design has an adorable 18 Wale Cord, Sun Valley Bootie Skirt-a slight A-line fit button close piece that’s lined with microfiber ($62).

The Sun Valley Sailor Pants- made from a slightly heavier cord, has a four button high front rise that manages to flatter…plus a 3% Spandex to keep the shape fitted, not saggy ($72).

Organic stretch French Terry (with a touch of Spandex)…is soft enough to sleep in. Carve Design uses this textile in a full, two way zipper, contrast color lined hood jacket-the Chamonix Jacket ($118)…a faux Chamonix Wrap Hoodie ($66), and a casual but not sloppy- medium rise snap and zip close Chamonix Pant ($62) that’s pumped up with side stripes down both legs.

Our top pic is the Merino Wool Wellington tunic ($118) with nice contrast hem details, flirty soft gatherings at the shoulder, a seamed waist with a removable tie…and a fit that hits mid thigh (to wear with leggings, bare legged or with pants).

Just perfect for days at the office or nights by the fire.

MFS EYEWEAR: “COOL AND FUN” CHILDREN’S SUNGLASSES

Outdoor Retailer Tradeshow, Salt Lake City Palace, Utah

Words & Image, Judith Ecochard and from company website

“Basically designed around sun protection for children…however, we have a sense of style,” neatly sums up David Scheinberg’s modus operandi for his extensive line of CPSIA (Consumer Protective Safety Improvement Act) compliant sunglasses for infants, toddlers, and kids.

Acknowledging, protective eyewear “is not a toy” the line of “My First Shades™” (about $15-for under 24 months)…and some of the nifty Sport line selections are paired with colorful stretchy neoprene bands, have no pointy/breakable side arms or metal hinges to poke, snag or snap. And they all offer 100% UV Protected, rustproof and waterproof…and made with professional grade polycarbonate frames and lenses that are shatterproof and impact resistant.

The shades fit securely and are a must for kids. We particularly think the polarized lenses on the Sport options for older kids, with side vents (no fogging) and a mesh head strap are a no brainer must have. Handy too is the microfiber bag/cleaning cloth they come packaged with.

It was no surprise to learn that MFS Eyewear holds 9 patents and a mass of trademarks… on its creations.

OVERLAND EQUIPMENT: REVAMPS FOR F/W 2009

FASHIONABLE, ‘SIMPLE’ HAULERS

Outdoor Retailer Market Winter 2009, Salt Lake City Palace UT

Words, Images Judith Ecochard

A good handbag is like a good friend…comfy, always there, sturdy…and maybe even better looking than you. Ha Ha!

And so we segway to…

Overland Equipment, a collection of carryalls that used to have a funky “outdoors” rep since the line was launched in 1981.

But with new owners and a visionary creative head, Suzi Pritchett conjuring up bags with flair, the whole line has been totally revamped. Now, “it’s fashionable and function-able…there’s a place for everything…honest bags for real people,” Pritchett notes.

The best selling Half Moon bag- a small or large messenger style carryall is curved to fit lady’s torsos, just so, sports a front flap that covers two huge pockets, has handy interior mesh pockets, and is made with a ballistic nylon in high abrasion areas for durability.

The Bayliss, a travel friendly style that can ergonomically work slung over shoulders or as a low riding waistpack, is also electronics friendly, has magnetic closures, has three separate compartments to carry it all, and comes in cool colors like coffee bean chocolate, dark olives (khaki), storm blue, etc. We particularly like the trims “inspired by climbing harnesses and ropes,” according to Pritchett…with heavy duty overstitching, “not overdesign.”

Laptop devotees will love the padded sleeves in many options. The Cambridge model, with adjustable padded shoulder straps… works as a backpack too. It’s also commuter, bike friendly with zipped secure outer pockets.

The Placer is as close to perfection as any gal would want for an everyday bag. With padded and fleeced zip interior pockets for valuables organized underneath a foldover flap, a stretch toggle for keys (what...no more archeological digs???!!!!).

Plus a tougher fabric for Fall 2009, earthy tones and fetching new logo…make The Placer a chic and practical choice for women.

Amazingly, Overland is EXTREMELY reasonably priced given that these neo-classics are in for the long haul….(around $35-$90).

PACKABLE, VERSATILE SEPARATES WEAR EASY.

Outdoor Retailer Market, Salt Lake City Palace January 23rd, 2009

Words, Images Judith Ecochard

We were bowled over (literally too…see below)… by the hugely desirable and highly functional garb set to hit retail shelves---from one of our fav clothing companies, Ex Officio.

Inspired by modern day jaunts along the ancient Silk Road, the men’s and women’s F/W 2009 offerings are practical, durable, made with the latest tech fabrics with high next to skin coziness, and are stylishly interchangeable with our everyday urban outfits.

Really, even those intrepid travelers who barely venture beyond their hometowns, will appreciate these mix and match pieces that seamlessly work with what they already own.

WHAT’S NEW:

Broken down into an Adventure, Destination and Outer (Under) Wear Collections…there are plenty of highlights…

Part of the Adventure/Roughian apparel series that’s “is designed for activities and climates around the tree-line…” a Takeover Trek’s Shirt for guys is cottony smooth to the touch, thanks to a 100% nylon textile- “Takeover Canvas.” The wear it everywhere snap shirt has three pockets (security chest, stacked utility), utility loop and roll up sleeves, …and no surprise, repels water, resists stains…and washes easy. ($88).

In the Destinations line, a collection of new separates made from wool and Soy’r™ the silky smooth, warm, and eco-friendly fabric (naturally odor and bacteria resistant)---joins the best selling men’s zipped and ¾ sleeve crew top.

Our top pics are the Yoga style pants and tank top for gals- that could work from the canyons of Wall Street to the canyons of the Grand one…depending on what we matchy-matchy them up with.

A comfy plush lady’s Persian Fleece hoody is just versatile.

And perfect for jamming into our carryalls, the wrinkle resistant drawstring waistband skirt, coined the SAVVY™ Skirt…can actually hike up and morph into a sleeveless dress too.

Outerwear gets a boost courtesy of CoreTech™-a supersoft fleece fabric that’s used in a men’s mid weight jacket and vest. Extremely wind-resistant. CoreTech Fleece is actually a three-layer laminate consisting of a protective polyester shell and a breathable membrane that has moisture wicking properties.

Another winner, the practically wrinkle free, stain resistant and always look good men’s Intrepid pants made from a brushed nylon eXo Dri™ Performance fabric…also comes in a feminine silhouette with a thicker waist band.

And gee whiz textiles aside, what makes Ex Officio special AND unusual---- are the details…the contrast overstitching on a shirt, the elegant flattering seams on a jacket, wear with everything neutral tones punched up with shots of contemporary bold shades…etc

We think in this economy…consumers are going to expect a lot more from their clothes…and much like ‘crossover shoes’ …want to get it down to a few key pieces that do it all.
