G STAR RAW - NY SPRING/SUMMER 2010

HAMMERSTEIN BALLROOM, West 34th Street

Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week

7:30 PM

G STAR RAW’s runway show for S/S 2010 was completely different than the denim heavy show we saw at Bread & Butter Berlin this past July.

First off, the staging and lighting, as always, was excellent and ups the drama. Three runways (the middle one raised), had models emerging, Star Trek style- from five floor to ceiling light columns, They walked a fast clip- in continuous motion… attired in ensembles that were decidedly grown-up to us.

BONUS POINTS: David Bowie’s Rebel Rebel set the sassy tone.

A pre-historic fish custom print (that also graced the folder holding the run of show) and a few geometric patterns-- - were on a few pieces,

solid colors ruled…including a bright saturated turquoise blue;

The show was largely edited around these colors too with the white, more casual looks starting things off.

As always, G-Star sources military/majorette and industrial elements in the design details...including a terrific dark royal coat.

We also got a Mad Men early sixties vibe…especially with the hairdos on some of the gals…and bold red lipstick.

And pin-up type bikini shorts.

But there were a number of handsome slim tailored suit jackets for men that could work for work.

Fabrics were a nice mix of textures including their signature denim that sport washes from bleached out/white to dark raw.

Women get some sophisticated dressy attire and like all the shows we saw, just about…hemlines were above the knee.

Our favorite look was the blue dress with white trimmed panels … and a cropped jacket.

Of course there was denim. Guys we know swear by the fit…though we feel the dropped crotch look probably won’t fly here,

...there were plenty of dark raw denim pants ---as well as a pair of classic chinos.

The G STAR RAW runway show, as always ---is one of our favorites…but we certainly missed the post show performance by some iconoclast like last season’s Benicio Del Toro dramatic reading of a Joy Division ditty.

Maybe they' could have gotten attendee Lindsay Lohan to say a few...she oozes drama.
