Home Away From Home Design Trends

Part 2

DDB Building Fall Market 2019
FABRICUT SHOWROOM

It's not easy to cause home envy in a crowd of professional decorators.
BUT Kendall Wilkinson (San Fran. based with a signature beauty/comfort MO garnering West Coast- Rocky Mountain clients), Tina Ramchandani (NY full service designer known for it's 'soulful minimalism') and Jackson Hole WY based duo Klaus Bauer and Rush Jenkins (WRJ DESIGNS-"Natural Elegance" personified)...managed a few lustful gasps-during an informative slide presentation last week.

As summed up by keynote host Brittany Chevalier McIntyre (Executive Editor of Luxe Interiors)-vacation homes are  the ultimate dream abodes -with a design must of comfort AND a place to work- for today's work life balance.

AKA "...living the same life in different homes...beginning with location and architecture."
SOME HIGHLIGHTS
A desire for LESS TECH by HIGH TECH honchos-noted Kendall Wilkinson; "they know what's going on..." (privacy concerns)
Designers can push clients outside of their comfort zone-for 2nd (3rd) homes.
A beautiful canvas-or artwork can be a starting point for an interior-while non-urban dwellings always includes "bringing the outside in..."
The great outdoors and travels factor into color palate choices.
Layouts and furnishings are reflections of clients' bucket lists-with examples including a spacious mountain home where the clients wanted a big kitchen as the heart of the residence-'that spreads out from there-with kid friendly bunk rooms...a contemporary/rustic entryway (pictured above) with custom lighting, a jaw dropping dining room suspended over a pond (WRJ DESIGNS)...and in contrast stylistically- a sleek Manhattan loft vibe encased inside a tradition shingle clad Quogue Beach home- that doubles as party central for large crowds-(tricked out game room, pocket doors that slide to a spacious pool area staged with durable lounge sectionals-pictured below) -by Tina Ramchandani.

In cities-second homes often function as work spaces too-including master bedrooms.

Clients range from hands off carte blanche types-to hands on wanting to be included in every decision. Basic technology wants, however-all tend to be similar-with click of a button (or app)  ease-include security (cameras), automated shades/blinds/ lightening and sound systems (speakers embedded in walls).

NEW TRENDS -downsized 'main' vacation homes with guest houses, tech -free bedrooms (NO TVs) to decompress in, the prevalence of natural materials (vs plastic) and considerations of clients' special needs-like allergies.

NO SURPRISE HERE: Vacation homes often become the primary residence-especially for older clientele -or dwellings in state income tax free locales (Wyoming)
