GERMAN RIESLINGS-The Perfect Halloween Wines

No surprise-Halloween candy sales are racking up registers to more than $2.6 billion estimated for last year-with $7 billion expected to be spent on the holiday festivities generally speaking.

And why not-it's fun, no gifts expected other than "tricks or treats," no family obligations and the parties are usually local...

Which is why this increasingly adult excuse of a good time...costumes included-is turning into a night of good times---with foods and drinks themed accordingly.

fruity and aromatic-with crisp green apple, grapefruit, peach and honey notes-Relax Riesling and Blue Fish Original Riesling are meant to be drunk NOW-slightly chilled. As with rieslings generally speaking-these wines are great paired with  fish, pastas, salads...salty foods as well as cheeses too-with its distinct sugar/acid balanced taste. Both are widely available.
Sure pumpkin flavored beers dominated our past events-but this year-we got a tip about the dry and off dry styles of aromatic German Rieslings-from the white grape native to the Rhine region- that pair perfectly with the often sticky sweetness of chewy candies (like gummy bears) and the  sour  sugary flavors of the one day/night a year only indulgence of American candies like fruity Starbursts, chewy Skittles (yes--a candy-)... and our fav-the classic Necco wafers!

Our Picks-The affordable- the balanced sugar-acid- aromatic slightly fermented RELAX Riesling (we found online for under $10.00)-with a hint of citrus... and the drier 2014 Blue Fish Original Dry Riesling $11-a sophisticated bargain of ripe peach, lemon, tart cherry and mineral notes-both  are great for the crowds of over 21 witches and goblins...or no doubt this year...costumed Presidential candidate masks/attire- which in certain circles-are a scary sight indeed LOL.

SKI VERMONT: Getting Ready For A New Season

WHAT: A press event that introduced (and reaffirmed) the wonders of the great state of Vermont...that serves up a lot of beautifully scenic, fun outdoors, user friendly destinations for snow pursuits, gourmet dining and laid back good times...!

From the northern Jay Peak Ski Resort-near the Canadian border-to the more southerly-  Hermitage Club at Haystack Mountain -a private forested-mountain oasis with a 90,000 sq foot slope side lodge with numerous facilities-and easy to get to from NYC and Boston,  Mt. Snow. home to the largest freestyle terrain east of the Rockies...there was plenty of new exciting ventures planned for the upcoming 2016-2017 season-year round.

Kudos to Killington's score of the  first WORLD CUP races to touch down on the east coast-Thanksgiving weekend. Very cool.

Other top spots that beckon...Stratton, (major thanks for our 2 bedroom condo+lift tickets-raffle win-CANNOT WAIT) Okemo (top rated snowmaking covering 98% of the overall terrine-#1 in Vermont- and high speed heated Orange Bubble chairlifts=fun), family friendly Smuggler's Notch with an expanded FunZone-featuring inflatables, games and areas of imaginative play for the under 10 years olds-and ninja warrior type obstacle courses, laser tag, climbing wall, slot car racing, arcade-etc-for older kids (and adults wanting in...)-and nearby Sugarbush Resort Stowe Mountain Resort, Bolton Valley (with loooong night skier hours for those willing and able to go for 12-13 hours/per), member's owned Quechee Club, the cult fav and a CO-OP (makes sense from the Sen. Saunders state) Mad River Glen, the "...better throwback ski area"-uncrowded Magic Mountain- the four seasons worthy- central Vermont located- luxurious Woodstock Inn and Resort-a timeless elegant oasis of relaxed New England charm -worthy of a a Gold List Conde Nast Traveler's fav with a LEEDS certified Spa (count us in!!!) -and nearby the Suicide Six Ski area... and the Mountaintop Inn and Resort -on 350 private lakeside acres with its own equestrian,  nordic ski and snowshoe center-in partnership with the US Forest Service for ample back country wanderings------with both- surrounded by the majestic Green Mountains.

Academy of Art University SS'17 Collections

The School of Fashion at Academy of Art University selected thirteen 13 students to debut their Spring 2017 collections at the University's 20th New York Fashion Week show on 9/9/ The Arc, Skylight at Moynihan Station/NYC.

"Since our first runway presentation at New York Fashion Week in September 2005, the show has grown in size and in the caliber of those in attendance such as retail executives, designers, recruiters, as well as the national and international media," said Dr. Elisa Stephens, President of Academy of Art University.

The runway shows by undergraduate and graduate students-always push the boundaries of what is possible for fashion---

For nine emerging designers - both current students and recent graduates - from The Art Institutes system of schools, last evening was the perfect opportunity to showcase each of their talents, determination, and creativity.  

This season’s theme was “Destinations.” The designers were challenged to take us on an inspirational journey of discovery and the collections that resulted walked the runway of The Art Institutes Spring 2017 show...


Designer #1: Adrian Escoto (Graduate, AAS Fashion Design program, The Art Institute of New York City) - Denim patchwork sportswear that is equal part street and uptown and is quintessentially New York through and through.

Designer #2: Bianca Zidik (Graduate, BFA Fashion Design program, 2016, The Illinois Institute of Art- Chicago) – Looks straight from Carnaby Street in London circa 1960 with a funky nod to Mr. Austin Powers himself… Groovy, baby!

Designer #3: Melody Hernandez (Graduate, BFA Fashion Design program, 2016, The Art Institute of Vancouver)- Modern sportswear that is both easy and wearable, but elevated by unexpected mixes of fabrics, prints, & design details.

Designer #4: Julissa Arrington  (Graduate, BFA Fashion Design program, 2015, The Art Institute of Dallas)- An avant-garde collection inspired by a journey of self-discovery through an unraveled mind.

Designer #5: Devon Pezzano (Graduate, BS Fashion Design program, 2016, The Art Institute of Philadelphia) - Deceptively heavy silhouettes juxtaposed against light airy fabrics meant to evoke the concept of levitation.

Designer #6: Mimmy Begazo (Graduate, BFA Fashion Design program, 2016, Miami International University of Art & Design) - A collection that explores the future and the technology used to help block radiation from our bodies.

Designer #7: René Mejia (Fashion Design AAS student, The Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale) - Eduardo Degas and his magnificent ballerina paintings inspired this collection of evening wear that is edgy and androgynous yet soft and feminine.

Designer #8: Esther Ashiru (Graduate, BFA Fashion Design program, 2016, The Art Institute of Vancouver)- A castle in Dublin, Ireland inspired this collection of opulent evening wear that evokes feelings of couture.

Designer #9: Maria D’Ocon (Fashion Design BFA Student, Miami International University of Art & Design)The cultural richness & diversity of Spanish art inspired this elegant bridal collection.

NYFW Highlights SS'2017 : LANYU, RUNA RAY, LRS

Part One:
The Dock, Skylight at Moynihan Station (360 West 33rd Street)

LANYU SS17 collection was inspired by the feminine and pure quality of the magnolia flower, and incorporated the Su embroidery technique, a traditional technique that has been handed down for generations in the designer’s family and is celebrated for its elegancy and photorealistic quality. With a nod to LANYU’s bridal couture roots versatile and playful ready-to-wear styles were featured alongside bridal pieces including tops, bottoms, cropped blazers, and dresses in a soft pastel color palette. Off-the-shoulder and plunging neckline tops, in addition to dresses with lace and embroidery accents and floor length gowns were shown in luxurious fabrics including various types of silk. Olivia Palermo, Whitney Port, Camren Bicondova, Vietnamese model, Jessica Minh Anh and musician Yundi Li graced the front row.
