“KICK INTO FUN, SLIP INTO STYLE”
July 22, 2009
Words, Images Judith Ecochard
We bet that that the flip flop flap that followed a White House meet/greet with then President Bush and the winning Northwestern Lacrosse team …would have been mitigated if the ladies wore some of the Flojos styles that we saw.
The number of mod Flojos thongs, sandals and slides on display for this administration- was staggering…so we zeroed in on the ones that jumped out to us. And we think Mrs. Obama would approve...
Naturally, the animal (ZEBRA, EXOTIC, leopard-SAFARI, JUNGLE, giraffe KENYA) and reptile (cobra MAMBA, snake PIPER) print patterns-in various color options… on flat thongs to 2 1/2inch wedges ($17-$36)… were still going strong, retail wise.
An unusual detail that we loved in one style…the KEIRA--- has a solid color upper with the outsole patterned in animal prints.
And there are slides (TANZI and AKELA) in trendy animal prints too.
Boho/Hippy cool is always “in” and Flojos has a cute peace sign medallion thong and a paisley print insole flip flop--- that’ll rock that look.
Crystal rhinestone embellishments on the Shoreline Chic leather ROXANNE style were also bump ups from the typical casual wear…and qualify as California formal footwear to us.
Men get their feet cuddled with the cradle effect of the heel to toe insole and the treaded heel outsoles of the popular leather Voyage and Swift sandals. ($48)
Also part of the Big Kahunas collection, the marbleized HOOPER and solid colored HUNTER with contrast stitching details…were smart looking kickers.
AND: Flojos mean “kick-back” in Spanish
PS: Can't blame the gal athletes though...cause thongs are easy comfort and college men's BBall teams have shown up in their sneakers.

ZEAL OPTICS: NEW LENS TECHNOLOGY FOR SUNGLASSES

LOOKIN’ COOL FRAMES BRING STYLE, CLARITY & KEEP THE GLARE OUT
OUTDOOR RETAILER MARKET, SLC UTAH
July 23rd, 2009
Words, Judith Ecochard
Images from the web and J. Eochard
We have always had a tough time finding sunglasses that don’t slide down the bridge of our noses.
That annoying problem was solved with a pair of women specific- designed Zeal Optics (the Tensai model).
What we didn’t know, and learned recently, was that the exclusive ZB-13 Polarized lenses that outfit our shades – perform in the broadest range of light conditions.
Meaning we don’t have to keep switching up our eye protection on days with varying there you see it, now you don’t –sunshine…that’s particularly not a fun activity in the middle of a climb or snowboarding. Happily one pair of sunglasses can provide comfort, clarity of terrain, ie depth perception, (there goes that excuse when we miss a putt), and optimal transmission of light to our peepers that we need.
And the frames sit just so on our face…that air can circulate…ridding us of foggy lenses.
For Spring 2010, Zeal Optics has trendy frames that’ll look as great on urban savvy types as well as they perform for die-hard athletes. We love the pricey Big Designer look of the lightweight, oversized Entice™ frames ($110)…and how the spring hinges allow us to strike a pose with the sunglasses resting on top of our head, without stretching out.
Another fav is the sport “shield” Orb™ ($110) that are as much of a fashion statement as any sunglasses we’ve ever seen. Except they actually are technically performing with adjustable non-slip, non-allergenic nose pads…and frames made from the highest quality, durable nylon via injection molding…out there.
Really, we’ve seen mega bucks sunglasses slapped on with a designers name that are not as high quality as the costs 50% less, Zeal Optics. And the shapes and blingy logo don’t merit the differential either.
Guys go for the best selling Maestro™ sunglasses ($130) …but we really liked the new Flyer™ ($110) that are oversized in a handsome rectangular shape.

ADDED PLUS: ZEAL lenses are also prescription ready, made from the same shatterproof Polycarbonate lense materials. And up to 30% of materials and cases come from recycled sources. ECO!

THOR LOs®: ON TREND EXPERIA SOCKS FOR AN ACTIVE LIFE
(AND THEY HOLD UP BETTER THAN WE DO)
SPRING 2010
Outdoor Retailer Market, SLC Utah
July 22, 2009
Words, Images Judith Ecochard
Experia Wool/Silk Image Courtesy Of Thor Lo®
To think they we could easily spend an hour talkin’ ‘bout activity specific socks…
Easily one of the highpoints at OR is our time spent at the THOR LO® booth …where our free wheeling chat gets us psyched to get OUT and actually try the ped coverings.
Last January, we were introduced to the Experia® COOLMAX® socks, the technically performing, fashion forward running socks (six colors) that launched a few months ago and “blew out.”
Here’s why.
Building on Thor los’ expertise in essential padding, the Experias are made with contoured and sculptured ball and heel engineered pads (where the foot strikes)…but are lighter and thinner (better fitting) than its competitors.
WHY? “Because of the evolution of footgear,” noted Jeff Lawson, Director of Marketing for Thor lo…”as they’re narrower, multi-functional, more narrow, and weigh less.”
“Comfort is still key.”
But more importantly to some, we’re sure…are the vibrant color options that bust out of that drab neutral palette---in citrus shades of lemon yellow, lime and orange...as well as black, blue and a blue/black duo.
That matchy-match the hot shades in running shoes too.
WHAT’S NEW: This fun, fashion/performing brand (CoolMax loaded-66%!!!) is coming out in even more new palette selections.
Just in time for the holidays, the “Taste of Chocolate” collection for gals is made up of Experia’s --in five snazzy “yummy” hot chocolate color combos…like Blue/Brown (and soft colors – yellow, pink, orange and lime /brown).
PLUS: For Spring 2010 (February launch)…three more Experia shades are set to hit retail shelves…orchid, turquoise, and a poppin’ cherry red. ($13.99)
For guys, the “tried and true” black/white combo…is still around…as it’s a best seller.
WHAT ELSE: Cross Training and ‘do-it-in-a-day” outdoor romps are rapidly gaining favor…and Thor lo is on it. A comfy merino wool (warmth, moisture management), blended with silk (soft!) --with the sculptured protective pads, of course--- are found in the new trail running friendly EXPERIA Wool/Silk socks ($16.99 February launch).
The aerodynamic, glove like fit comes courtesy of Lycra® while a lightweight Achilles Tendon Pad protects against rubbing and chafing.
And because Thor lo is all about “bringing fun to a frugal consumer,” these socks are coming out in cool shades like “Khaki, Pink Pizazz, Burnt Orange, Brick Red, Wild Blue Yonder, Charcoal, Celery, Forest Green, and Chestnut Brown.”
There’s a crew style too ($19.99) in dude friendly darker shades of Chestnut Brown, Forest Green, and Charcoal.
“We’re going to keep being creative…and keep experimenting…keeping it fresh,” Lawson told us. Amen to that.
PLUS: “Our philosophy is longevity…our socks last five to ten years.” Point being that even though Thor los are made of/with synthetics, they last longer, spare refills, and “you can recycle synthetics.”
FYI: 100% MADE IN THE USA.

OlovesM: ECO/SPORT BAGS: FUN & FUNCTIONAL WITH A STORY
RE-PURPOSED MATERIALS CRAFTED BY CO LOCALS=COLLECTION WITH A BIG HEART
OUTDOOR RETAILER MARKET, SLC UTAH
July 23rd, 2009
Words, Booth Image Judith Eocohard
Other Images from the WEBSITE
We were always cruising by the booth of the OlovesM Collection of trendy eco carryalls…on our way to and from the East/West divide of the Outdoor Retailer Market/Salt Palace floorplan… that took us hours to figure out, duh.
Lucky us, we caught a free moment with the engaging, busy bee proprietor, Merle O’Brien…who was usually swarmed with buyers.
Here’s why: The bags are really nice and come in all the sizes we need…clutches, totes, H2O holders, bucket satchels. All are well made…by home workers, (yes!), have inner and outer compartments for haulers like us, and come in terrif colors and patterns.
Our top picks in the lineup are the sandy jute offerings in big and small sizes. The super sized Sundance model was the eco swag bag at the Film Fest.
There’s also a Sport Collection that includes the aforementioned water bottle holder with a handy mesh pocket for our necessaries.
Perky patterns dominate the Fab Collection’s functional Fab Tote (with a mat bottom)…and the peace signed selection really garnered BIG retailer interest.
Major bonus points go to OlovesM as all the fabrics are “repurposed” - sparing ours landfills---.plus the company donates bags to raise $ for non-profits,
A nice story---but trust us, OlovesM’s got game too…stylewise.

K2™ AND ORIGINAL PENGUIN™ LAUNCH THE SLAYBLADE
2009/2010 COLLABORATION FOR THE BEST IN ALL TERRAIN RIDING- WITH STYLE
THE STANDARD HOTEL, MEATPACKING DISTRICT, NYC
July 29th, 2009
Words, Images Judith Ecochard
We thought we had to do a major rewire of brain cells as the Original Penguin/K2 launch was our first NY "Fashion" event after a week in Utah at Outdoor Retailer.
Impressively though, this limited edition mash-up of these two stellar brands went beyond well. It was genius…and captured the MO of what we saw in the Rockies, fashion forward style without compromising the technical attributes of our gear that we demand, and rely on as athletes.
Original Penguin™ is a major global lifestyle brand and has come a long way since the powers that be took grandpa’s go-to polo with the birdy logo…and developed into a casual cool collection of guys and gals attire/accessories with classic American swagger. It is huge across the Pond, as authentic USA labels with panache are in BIG demand by Euros…
We REALLY discovered this a few weeks ago-while at the massive Bread n Butter, Berlin.
Also noticeable---- Original Penguin has signature design elements, besides the logo…like colorful retro edgy plaid/stripped patterns that are eye-catching--- not eyeball busting tacky.
It’s probably these attributes that captured the interest of Cory Little, the K2 Global Image and Design Manager who generously shared some of his thoughts with us with regards to the SLAYBLADE …and package appropriate MASIS DBL BOA boots and AUTO bindings.
“I reached out to them (O.P.) he told us…and toiled with the many bits of fabric images on his computer- to get the mix just right.
Clearly he has a good eye to “make it work” as the visuals of the board are cohesive, balanced and HIP.
It was the super knowledgeable Charlie Kiesa, the Mid Atlantic Territory Manager of K2 who gave us the 411 on the technical gee whiz aspects of the equipment on display.
First off- the boards are lightweight due to patented HYBRITECH CONSTRUCTION, that “features a thin, constant thickness sidewall designed for maximum performance and minimal material usage.” Added pluses: turns easy…very important in thick snow, even we’d have a hard time trashing the board (durable)…and the tail doesn’t spin out so we don’t wipe out (as much)…
AND stability is also greatly aided by the new FLATLINE TECHNOLOGY that doesn’t detract from the responsiveness or “POP” of the board.
What really jazzed us was the HARSHMELLOW TECHNOLOGY… a unique vibration dampening system that helps our fear level, as we ride on East Coast ice or slicked out catwalks at speed. It’s a synthetic polymer compound…that’s applied to the board (it looks/feels wavy---Kiesa tilted the board so we could see), the boots (a thick layer “designed to absorb impact and shock associated with stomping landings”), and a medium layer on the bindings that absorb low frequency vibrations.
Bottom Line: All three layers got you vibrantly covered.
We also got schooled on the original white Original Penguin™ boot with a shock absorbing footbed (EVA Foam, Harshmellow Technology) for better board feel, and the souped up linings…the Intuition™ Control foam 3D – supple, supportive and long lasting-no packed in throwaways at the end of the season…and the Boa® CONDA System that” hangs on tight and will never let go.”
And freezing our hands to lace up is so old school…as the liner lacing system (kinda a misnomer)--- is really a multi-part dial -in comfortable support via the easily accessible black knobs that increase/decrease pressure. Nice.
WHAT’S NEXT? The O.P. helmut? We vow to ride with one of those.
MAJOR BONUS POINTS: Kiesa did not roll his eyeballs or even crack a smile when we told him we’re still rockin the K2 Clickers from the last Century (ok we have a problem with the toe edge). Thank-you Charlie- as we totally dated ourselves…

5.11+ TACTICAL ®: APPAREL & GEAR
SMART OUTDOOR/TRAVEL FRIENDLY CLOTHES THAT ARE “THE CHOICE OF FEDERAL, STATE, AND LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT”
OUTDOOR RETAILER SUMMER MARKET, SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH
July 23rd, 2009
Words, Images Judith Ecochard
We grew up/live in a town (ok, a really big one, NYC) where residents are effortlessly too cool for school, where trends are set, and the sleek street wear adorning the swarms of humanity that crowd the sidewalks …are mimicked by fashionistas across the globe.
Nevertheless----we got a MAJOR bump up in our “hip” quota after getting Outdoor Retailer educated on a line of clothing, that of all things (LOL)--- is tailored to meet the needs of law enforcement and military agencies around the world:
5.11+ TACTICAL®.
WHAT: We were lucky to get a nice, knowledgeable Division Manager to show us the key separates…and point out the intentionally not so obvious bells and whistles.
First off, we reviewed the new Taclite™ Pro Pant that’s an easy-care, durable and breathable (65% polyester/35% cotton) version of the “authentic” 5.11+ Tactical® Pant.
Frankly, we were bowled over by the details…like an extra Cordura® edged media pocket, (FYI really crafted to hold magazines, NOT the reading kind, and phones), patented rear strap and slash pockets for easy access- that doesn’t rip, Teflon® treated to resist stains, and tailoring pluses like double and triple needle stitching, a diamond gusseted crotch for bustin’ stretchy moves, pre-cut holes at the bottom-good for wearing boots, and YKK® zippers and Prym® snaps…the primo kind used by the very high-end designers we cover in our other life.
At $49.99, we think these trousers (Men’s and Women’s) are a multi-functional no-brainer purchase, as they look good (the cargo pockets lie flat), pack/travel well, and will smartly hold up under the most challenging conditions and athletic endeavors. Size ranges are staggering…not to worry…and color options are the neutrals that’ll blend (Coyote beige, TDU Green, TDU Khaki, Tundra-a grayish brown fusion, Dark Navy, and the urban fav, Black).
We also saw the Taclite TDU Pant, a super strong trouser with self-adjusting waist for comfort, cargo pockets with built-in dividers to organize what one’s hauling around, triple stitching and double-thick seat and knees…
…and the fully loaded (metaphorically speaking) TDU Pant that boasts cargo pockets with a Back-up Belt System™ for all kinds of extra gear (on the legs), triple stitching and 40-plus bar tacks in high stress areas, plus free removable neoprene knee pads.
We probably would be very happy wearing a pair on mega mountain treks/scrambles and Spring snowboarding…as technically performing attire works wherever, when ever.
There are shorts in this grouping too.
Shirts are equally as well done and not “dumbed down.”
New this year are the Taclite Pro Long and Short Sleeve Shirt ($49.99) made from a durable, Teflon® treated, light weight 4-oz 65% polyester/35% cotton ripstop fabric. The fabulous details include a handy pen pocket on the left sleeve, no shoulder seams…they’re rolled forward so its good for carrying backpacks (or holsters), six pockets including 5.11’s patented hidden document pockets that are easily accessed, and neat touches like a hidden button down collar, a cape back with moisture wicking mesh liner, and double reinforced elbows on the long sleeves.
Added Plus: Melamine buttons that are practically indestructible…and matchy-matchy color options.
A Covert Collection of casual lightweight, breathable tops (UPF 40) have a Tommy Bahamas vibe—and fill the need for functional, versatile clothes that can hold one's stash.
And that sport tailoring flourishes that are crucial, given the customer base----like breakaway side vents for easy access to holster or whatever one has attached that’s well concealed due to the generous cut, and patent-pending concealment pockets---in the front with a cool RapiDraw center front snap-that’s perfect for travel documents. We were impressed with the way the fabric- a 70% rayon/30% polyester polynosic fabric with a proprietary weave- drapes on the body. Apparently, the shirts conceal “naturally” over guns or gear…
We’ve spent enough time in pickpocket paradises…so we love the Covert tops. Waiting for the Ladies’ version…
Because like that Beatles' ditty, “…everybody’s got something to hide…”
There’s an extensive line of Undergear too. We got the 411 on the Holster Shirt, a dual layer shirt (outer mesh/inner neoprene with a terry cloth surface) with genius side pockets that we were told…would appeal to the sneak in the beers/flasks to football game types. Ahem.
Realistically, it’s a great workout top (finally, a smart way to carry our iPod and Blackberry)…plus the flat seams prevent chafing and the fabric is moisture wicking, antimicrobial and quick drying with 20% spandex for shape retention and a close fit. ($49.99).
UNBELIEVABLE: AGAIN….the prices. And the actionwear we wear has got to be comfortable, and importantly-highly reliable. SO we respect the MO of this company.
MOST WANTED: This is a real breakthrough. The Light For Life™ ($169.99) is an amazingly lightweight torch that uses no batteries and charges in 90 seconds (eco friendly!). It shines at a bright 90 lumens for 90 minutes per charge (270 lumens peak) and is rated to last for 50,000 charge cycles…meaning it ‘fires’ up once daily for 135 years.
Science wise, this revolutionary flashlight is “powered by FlashPoint® Power Technology, a sophisticated energy management system that merges state-of-the-art ultracapacitors with advanced solid-state programming to efficiently load, and unload, and manage energy.”
What a perfect ‘have’… for every one, everywhere. As Big Apple residents, we’d like to see the FDNY kitted out with these…as we have strong opinions on equipment failures, like they’re not an option.
WHAT ELSE: Talk about an inventory model that should be a subject of a Harvard Business School Case Study—5.11+ Tactical® has a massive inventory on hand, ready to ship NOW. Serendipitously, retailers and consumers are ordering/purchasing on a tight, in season leash- instead of months ahead of time---especially in these economic climes. And 5.11+ Technical® can deliver the goods as needed. And always has- as its core customer base, like the FBI, doesn’t pre-order.
BACKGROUND: Head guy Dan Costa took his former company, Royal Robbins’ 5.11 climbing pants…and morphed them into 5.11+ Tactical® with added details, and over the years, expanded offerings of accessories and attire.
Customer feedback is key…and “5.11’s Subject Matter Experts” include Special Forces/Special Operations Command veterans turned “no-nonsense, battle-proven tactical training” kind of guys.
Seriously impressive and mildly intimidating.
THE NAME: A rating system (Yosemite Decimal System) “grades” the difficulties of rock climbs from 5.0 (easy) up through 5.10 A B C or D (tough, tough, tough-we’re sweatin’ bullets (sic) at 5.8).
And then there’s 5.11…that “ is officially defined as, “After thorough inspection, you conclude this move is obviously impossible; however, occasionally someone actually accomplishes it.”

CRUMPLER: HIP BAGS THAT CARRY IT ALL
S/S 2010
Outdoor Retailer Market, SLC-Utah
July 23rd, 2009
Words, Images- Judith Ecochard
We had a senior moment when we first got the email from Crumpler. But then our brain cells fired up with complete recognition…as this line of fun and thoughtfully detailed haulers are very popular in the Big Apple (especially the Messenger and Photographers Bags
with padded laptop sleeves and a quiet Velcro silencer so as not to ruin the moment).
Originally hailing from Australia, Crumpler’s navigated the Pacific with colorful and durable carryalls that manage to have compartments for people like us- that carry our lives around (the Commuter line)...and for people that carry their near and dear around (baby packs).
What’s new for Spring 2010 are the Duffle Bags made from Nylon 900 “D” …meaning it’ll survive commercial airline manhandling.
And the revamped, retooled Sinking and Customary Barges daypacks and bags also have rainhoods that protect against the elements.
There’s also a hydration pack collection (The Bumper Issue) with tubes that snake down either side, a clip that has a safety whistle, a bite valve and a removable bladder so one can use the carryall as a day pack too.
Crumpler Bags has an e-commerce store, are available online on many sites… and has a brick and mortar’s location in the West Village at 49 8th Avenue Between Jane and West 4th Streets, NYC.
WHAT WE LOVE: The names…like “5 Million Dollar Home” for a large messenger bag…and jazzy graphics ---like the traffic stopping "Barney Rustle Blanket" hauler.
FYI: Apparently the founder stitched up the originally Crumpler to efficiently transport pizza and a six-pack of beer. ALRIGHT MATE!

SMARTWOOL: S/S 2010
THE HIGH PERFORMANCE COLLECTION FOR ATHLETES AND EVERYDAY
OUTDOOR RETAILER MARKET, SLC, UTAH
July 23rd, 9:30AM
Words, Images Judith Ecochard
Merino wool has been a favorite textile of outdoorsy types for years because of its inherent moisture management abilities, breath-ability and comfort…and yes, theoretically, ‘it’s’ sustainability.
SmartWool has merino wool in its DNA…and it’s a brand that is celebrating its 15th anniversary…with new socks and apparel to join its original claim to fame, ped coverings for hiking.
For the base layers in the Sport Collection that are silky smooth to the touch…a new Technical Knit Merino (TMK) fabric…a technically souped up polyester that “enhances structure and fit” – gets major play in the cycle wear.
Special touch: jersey knit and mesh eyelet mesh placed in strategic areas for passive venting- in the Cottonwood and Farewell Jerseys for gals ($95), and the Flagstaff and Betasso Jerseys for guys ($110).
Other Details: a zippered secure pocket with media port and three drop-in-back pockets,..in bold colors like Electric Blue, Limelight and Orange.
Cycling shorts (Men’s Batasso, Women’s Cottonwood –both MSRP $150) boast 50% recycled stretch woven polyester outer short material and a bias-cut back yoke.
Added Plus: Gender specific padded liners made from Italian chamois covered in SmartWool that allows for maximum airflow and comfort.
A new SportStyle lifestyle line of well-made graphic laden tees and tanks- is made from a new fabric called “Casuwool™.” Unbelievably soft, this Merino knit 17.5 micron yarn is a year round textile, easily layered under or over all the tees/tanks we own...or worn all on its own! (W-$75, M-($70)
Also new for S/S 2010 are the PhD Ultra Light cycling sock in ¾, mini and micro lengths. Really ultralight-courtesy of a 200 point needle count that renders it the thinnest sock SmartWool ever made. Technical bells and whistles still include the acclaimed 4 degree fit system (2 arch bands, one ankle, and one underneath)…that insure a perfect fit-reduces abrasion, and reduces shock on high impact areas. (M/W-$16.95)
Men also get a Lightweight Collection that’s crew length. Good for everyday wear, the socks are lightweight, breathable, and have micro-cushioning. They’re available in dapper Simple Stripe, Simple Plaid and Tequila Stripe patterns…the latter perfect for after-work Happy Hours. ($19.95).
SmartWool also carries its usual suspects for on the job, work boot style attire. Again, compression fit and specific cushioning for lace-ups are built in.
Ladies runners (us) get new socks too –the Spring Bull’s Eye in snazzy shades like Surf heather. Made with WOW Technology™…the ped coverings have a supportive arch brace. ($14.95)
This company was new to us…but once we saw the Don Quixote-ish logo…we had a lightbulb moment…as we have seen SmartWool’s socks at outdoor stores everywhere.
FYI: New Zealand Sourced! ...and cool scarves!

We attended a benefit for the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation after a stomach churning day in the financial markets - last November. Anxiety aside, we were very impressed with the dedication and fierce commitment of attendees, volunteers and employees (let alone the stellar entertainment by Steely Dan and the millions of $ raised)…
…that we were very less than thrilled when a bump off a flight delayed our return to New York…and a missed opportunity to reconnect.
Happily, The annual summer benefit for the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation went a whole lot smoother than flying commercial. Not surprisingly, the soiree was crowded--- with guests nibbling on chef’s tastings from the Hampton’s tastiest restaurants, rolling the dice for Lady Luck at casino tables, and generously bidding on silent and live auction items- that generated an impressive $265,000 for this non-profit.
Jon Goesselin,Erin Muller, Michael Lohan
Keynote speaker, Dr. Samuel Waxman highlighted the work the Foundation is currently accomplishing— (and we quote from the release)…developing treatments to successfully address breast cancer, particularly the form that devastatingly affects young women, and to examine and resolve the reasons why cancer re-occurs within patients once it has been successfully cured. Through the encouraging research that the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation has conducted in their mission to cure cancer, Dr. Waxman looks forward to promising prospects, closing his address, “It keeps me young and passionate to see such an exciting future ahead.”

FYI: The Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation (SWCRF) is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization focusing on one of the most promising strategies for developing cures and treatments for many types of cancer; even offering hope for preventing cancer from developing. It is on the cutting edge of a revolution with alternatives to the traditional treatments of chemotherapy and radiation, which kill cancer (and healthy) cells. Foundation supported research includes reprogramming chaotically growing cancer cells to behave normally and understanding cancer stem cells’ ability to spread and resistance to treatment. The results will lead to precisely targeted treatments or preventatives having minimal side effects on the recipients.

EX OFFICIO: S/S 2010- “CLOTHING FOR THE ADVENTUROUS SPIRIT”
TECHNICAL, OUTDOORS, ADVENTURE & TRAVEL CLOTHES GET BUMPED UP AFFORDABLE STYLE
Outdoor Retailer Market, Salt Lake Palace Convention Center
July 23rd, 2009
Words, Images Judith Ecochard
Ex Officio has come a long way since two fly-fishing enthusiasts stitched up a functional shirt with the snazzy functionality of a fly-fishing vest.
A VERY long way as the Seattle, WA based clothier now offers a full range of stylish technical garments, accessories and shoes “…devoted to enhancing worldly exploration…” ---even if that adventure is limited to a few subway stops on the IRT or a trip to the Mall.
Ex Officio’s ability to conjure up clothing that packs well, is affordable and multi-tasks (sun protection, insect shield, thoughtful design details like French seaming, security zip pockets, flat seam finishing, indestructible button system, saddle stitch shoulder seams… easy care, moisture wicking etc)…gets well played in newer pieces set to launch for Spring/Summer 2010.
HIGHLIGHTS:
We got an intro to a few new styles made with the Neptune™ fabric-a textile treated with Nanoplex™ that absorbs harmful UVA and B rays, is a moisture wicker and killer of bacteria to eliminate odors.
A women’s Neptune™ full zipper long sleeve and a cool tank…and a guy’s Neptune™ Cricket (note to selves-learn that sport), and a mod ¼ Zip with wrist guard with thumb loop and extended neck for full sun protection…are all street/trekking friendly riffs on rashguard styles- but have more forgiving silhouettes. Favs like the long sleeve crew get Springy in dusty lapis, white, cigar or copper tones.
Being bug adverse, including those ticks that always mange to cling to the spots on our backs that we can’t reach…we were glad to see some fresh takes on the Insect Shield® repellant apparel that “binds permethrin to fabric fibers resulting in effective odorless insect protection for 70 washings.” (pics at top)
For gals and guys the new FlyBye™ shirts with a low profile security pocket –come in on trend colors (white, copper, lapis, jade) and join the highly rated, best selling Halo™ long sleeve shirts in ultra light nylon and with two front pockets.
The new M/W Ziwa™ pants (regular and convertible) are tricked out with great side pockets with notch out hand pockets for easier access to one’s stash.
We’re waiting for the golf apparel. HINT.
We give two thumbs up to the new Utility Vest--- part of the Gobi™ Collection, inspired by classic safari/photographers’ attire. A streamlined version of the original Gobi™ Vest, it sports seven pockets, a leaner profile, and an exterior travel system with two back security pockets separated with a cooling airstrip back. For $85-very affordable…and the ladies’ version curves in at the waist for feminine flair.
For everyday garb that packs and unpacks flawlessly…the Outlier™ Shorts, Bermuda and Pants give men handsome, durable and forgiving wardrobe options in khaki and cigar shades.
There’s the female equivalent too…in a sleek Bermuda with plaid fabric options... and a cute skirt…that all weigh like nothing -and have everlasting details that are often overlooked…liked pin zippers and mini side vents.
We also liked the refreshed version of the Go-To™ Sleeveless Dress made from a DriRelease silky smooth jersey. We could probably live in the Go-To™ Leggings and Capri (with a flattering wide waistband) built with 5% spandex for shape retention--- that joins this collection for S/S 2010.
Lastly, the Adventure Collection gets a bunch of new shirt options that are ultra light, breathable and drip dry friendly. We got schooled on the ExHale™ long sleeve shirt (bone, sage) that’s made from rip stop nylon, with two zip front pockets, has a UPF 30+ rating, button down collars or up (in case of sun protection), roll up tab sleeves and laser welded mesh to avoid breaking a sweat.
WE DIDN”T SEE but we know they’ll blow out of stores…the new underwear cuts… like Give-N-Go® Thongs and That’s Fly Boxers and Boxer Briefs…both made with some stretchy Lycra™ Spandex.
After all, who wouldn’t want TO LIVE the tagline:
“17 Countries. 6 Weeks. And one pair of underwear. Ok, maybe two.”
SHIP DATES mid-December 2009 through March 2010, depending.

OUTDOOR INDUSTRY ASSOCIATION THOUGHT LEADER SYMPOSIUM
OUTDOOR RETAILER SUMMER MARKET
MARRIOT CITY CENTER, SLC - UTAH
July 20th 2009
6:30 PM
Words, Images Judith Ecochard
After a sunny and FUN Demo Day, we headed over to the OIA Thought Leader Symposium, a networking dinner that brought together Outdoor Retailer attendees, government officials, and industry leaders- ready to press the flesh and “tackle important issues affecting the success and growth of the industry.”
It was also a night that marked an occasion- as this industry group was celebrating its 20th birthday. The Conservation Alliance too…
The three plus hour event was also one of reflection “…about where we’re going (and) how can we manage into the future,” noted Frank Hugelmeyer, President & CEO of OIA.
Especially poignant ===given the challenging economic times.
People were wearing everything from a suit and tie (government officials, natch) to river sandals, casual short sleeves, and long board shorts- for this packed event.
What particularly interested us was the panel gathered to discuss the topics the “new economy…new business models…the new consumer…and conservation and the environment.”
Beginning with a positive spin, the Lieutenant Governor of Utah, Gary Herbert, made a few opening remarks on how great Utah is for business, and how it’s a destination state for tourists.
“We’re friendly and believe in outdoor recreation,” Herbert commented.
We were impressed that there is a dedicated state employee to all things outdoors –a position staffed and FUNDED…as this area is one of the key eight “economic clusters” identified as being critical to Utah’s financial well being.
Refreshing.
We also like how Herbert, who is soon to be Governor, thanked the current holder of that office, Jon Huntsman who is set to be this country’s Ambassador to China.
“He’s going to be a rock star,” Herbert opined. We hope so…given frienemy China’s 13 billion people, economic ties with the planet, sway over North Korea, and as the major holder of USA’s debt.
The panel discussion, moderated by the congenial Mike Wallenfels – CEO, Mountain Hardwear ---had the accomplished (SMART) participants, Steve Barker – CEO, Eagle Creek, Kim Coupounas – founder and Chief Environmental Officer, GoLite, Lee Fromson – Vice President, gear & apparel, REI, Sally McCoy – CEO, CamelBak, tackling one of the key “mega” issues affecting the future of the Outdoor Industry.
What got our brain cells swirling…
Lee Fromson’s (REI) remarked that he anticipates an economic recovery no sooner than 2010…and that if “you have cash and you have a relationship with a bank, you will thrive.”
“It’s got to be up compared to last year,” he added.
Fromson’s also observed how retailers are waiting till the last minute to put in their orders, as consumers are procrastinating too…waiting to see “who breaks prices first.”
Tellingly, Fromson observed that consumers seem to be more value oriented and conservative in how they spend $s… versus the who ever has the most toys wins mentality. The flashy buyers might be lying low, we thought…but we are a consumer driven economy…
But we agree that ‘we’ are pickier…
Fromson’s other concerns included long-term unemployment--- particularly white-collar jobs.
On a positive note, environmental ethics that seem to have really meshed into our nation’s DNA…”play into our sweet spot.” Agree!
Kim Coupounas (GoLite) made the on target point that yes, we “are now in a recession…but not to let people get trapped by the doom and gloom.” THANK-YOU.
“No one joins OIA for a pot of gold…we do it for love.”
The outdoor industry is not recession proof, she added…but it does okay in any economy as people “go to nature to regain their balance.”
Coupounas also mentioned the difference between “making the sale versus offering a solution,” and the upside of staycations, do-it-in-a-day jaunts…and how important it is to “make getting outdoors positive, affordable and accessible.”
Sally McCoy – CEO, CamelBak discussed new business models. Referring to Wal-Mart’s recent announcement to survey all suppliers in an attempt to “calculate environmental costs” and implement a type of eco lable …McCoy pronounced- the outdoor industry “can’t neglect social compliance.”
Naturally (ahem), the outdoor industry-that originated in the counter culture movement of the 60’s and 70’s-has always been sensitive and pro-active on sustainability issues---
We cover the fashion biz too and are sadly astonished how behind the eco curve that industry is.
We do agree with Coupounas that consumers born after 1980 will more willingly pay up (slightly, anyway) for ‘eco” goods…
Steve Barker, CEO of Eagle Creek commented on how manufacturers were “leaving China to look for the next cheapest spot.” He felt that this MO would be “tough” to do now, given the advent of regulations, sustainable business practices, social compliance etc.
What else is tough…is the ability of small manufacturers, “the backbone of the business” to compete in this business climate.
Barker also remarked on the shorter lead times between retail orders and deliveries…in an on demand environment. We feel that shorter everything is a way of life on this fast paced planet…and looked forward to our interview with the guys at 5.11+ Tactical® , a ‘clothing’ company that has inventory stocked at the ready for law enforcement and military types who don’t pre-order.
We had a ‘huh?’ moment when an attendee- who had a question regarding how her small retail establish can survive...got a ‘deal with it’ ‘tude. IMHO. We felt she could have gotten some positive spin…like developing multi-channel customers (not too costly), and the importance of white glove service via a tip top sales staff… and the VALUE of that knowledge, something we pay for when buying gear.
And we’re the type that hasn’t read a hard copy newspaper in five years.
We gave an amen though to the acknowledged need for the industry to be inclusive- as outdoor activities are colorblind…and the need for customers to see a diverse sales staff---aka someone that looks like them.
Living in NYC, we take ethnic blends as a given…but notice that when we go camping, rock climbing etc…that mash-up of humankind disappears.
And there were a few minutes devoted to the importance for retailers to earn the hearts and minds of Millenniums (Gen Yers)…who grew up logged on to something. Just having a Facebook page doesn’t count…but delivering the whole retail “experience” does. Companies adapt at that –that were mentioned included LuLu Lemon, Anthropology and MAC Cosmetics.
We would add Apple- as people pay a premium for those ‘toys’ and for that awesome customer service. We can think of no other bricks and mortar retailer open 24/7 (the Fifth Avenue store)…that’s always buzzing…and a destination for the hordes of tourists after the touchdown at JFK.
Lastly, the need to “differentiate your product” was also highlighted…as the “man in China will be launching their own brand.”

SERGIO GIANNASSO- Salon Opening
MALCOLM & SERGIO
53 St. Martin’s Lane, Convent Garden, London
July 5th, 2009
Words, Images Judith Ecochard
Talk about welcoming!
There we were just strolling along in London under sunny skies (WOW SUNNY SKIES)…when we saw a gaggle of well-dressed, cooler than us types sipping champagne outside a glass fronted retail space.
We noticed the upscale hair products through window…and being curious we walked right in.
Well, when we are in London we know where we’re going for cut/color. We had happily stumbled on the opening of the congenial Serge Giannasso’s beauty salon…a cozy two story sanctuary designed with the clients’ luscious locks in mind.
What a great guy…I MEAN WE MET HIS FAMILY!!!!!!!!!
And clearly a skilled hair stylist and makeup artist---- because we chatted with scores of clients from the guy’s days past at Charles Worthington salons...who all to the mane, gave this Italian now UK resident free rein on their locks.
And they all looked FAB!

createeurope: THE FASHION ACADEMY AWARD
Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, Berlin
July 4th, 2009
Hotel de Rome, Mitte
Words, Images Judith Eocchard
One of the many reasons we love Berlin…and the Fashion Week that’s a bi-annual gig…is that Germans GET the importance of the “creative industries” and the “culturally economy.” And the financial one, we might add.
That’s why this fab city goes all out for attendees who descend on this great metropolis for the dynamic convergence of runway and tradeshows…and exhibits, openings, etc.
We saw the Mayor several times, dapper in his suit...and it was toasty over there…without the American style A/C blasting away.
There were German celebs galore...not that we knew who they were…and some international personalities like Justin Timberlake, Diane Kruger and Sienna Miller.
Helping to keep Germany as a draw for young talent is the createeurope: The Fashion Academy Award --- sponsored by the Goethe-Institut and EUNIC (Association of the European Institutes for Culture)…to further German and international fashion designers. There’s an age limit of 32 for this year's over 1000 applicants---with 30 finalists selected.
The grand finale, a catwalk show with six outfits per…is scheduled for October 2009.
There was a press conference…in German. Duh. But we got the 411 that the award is particularly critical for young talent in times of financial crisis...and how important the creative process and innovation truly is---to the biz.
ADDED PLUS: Designer Dirk Schönberger, Creative Director of Joop is the “patron saint.”

STARSTYLING: S/S 2010 and SCHOLL Collaboration

Bebelplatz, Mitte
Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, Berlin
July 4th 2009
We missed the Starstyling runway show…but love the “quirky” images we were sent.
Reading up on the label ---we learned that the offbeat fashion sense is deliberate…and ironically so. Founders Katja Schlegel and Kai Seifried are Berlin based and clearly like to have fun, attire wise…
Starstyling reminds of us the Italian line Mossimo…with its playful use of text and funky graphics.
Our top look from this line however…are the vintage inspired sandals…a collaboration with Scholl.
Awesome.

GURU: LIFESTYLE BRAND DEBUTS S/S 2010- BREAD & BUTTER, BERLIN

Tempelhof Airport, Berlin
July 1st, 2009
Words, Images Judith Ecochard
and from the company website
GURU is a hip lifestyle/clothing brand …born in Italy…and now owned by the MASSIVE Bombay Rayon Fashion Ltd. of India (April 2008).
What got us interested was the quality of the clothes…and there are over 350 SKUs available. Wow.Gian Maria Montacchini, the brains behind Guru's daisy logo, has returned as "fashion coordinator" according to the press material we got.
And apparently this "up market" brand is well known in Europe...as there are 15 stores and 9 franchises across the Pond.
There’s a surfer/rocker vibe going on with the sporty collection (50's graphics too). Also the "Logo Life" and "Work" collections of streetwear…have great details (contrast collars), unusual finishes, spot on styling, and top end fabrics (especially the knitwear) in terrif colors and patterns.
Other lines are coined “Riviera” and "Biarritz" that’s a “cleaner look..no logo” that are inspired by "60's playboy..."and designed by hand in shades like ice blue, purple, carrot, cream, coral and blueberry.
Hilariously, we thought…but SO SMART…Guru nabbed the Taxi Driver (1976) movie license and has a line of kinda military punk, edgy clothing. This being a global brand…we can see hordes of guys in SE Asia loving it.
Who would have thought the De Niro character- Travis Bickle -aa fashion trend-setter? But the tagline…”You Lookin’ At Me?----clearly foreshadow.
We got to take some pics of the Spring 2010…and grabbed some images from the company website.

NIVEA BODY: GOOD-BYE CELLULITE

Patches, Gel-Cream, Supplements--- with L-Carnitine
Cellulite, the wrinkling cottage cheese looking kind on the back of thighs, tummies, arms…is often the subject of those glossy reads that we pick up as we wait to check out of our local Stop N Shop…the ones with blaring headlines courtesy of some paparazzi photo of an unsuspecting celeb type.
We’re not famous, so no worries of TMZ slams. But we were curious as to whether Nivea’s Good-bye Cellulite regimen, an affordable alternative to pricey laser treatments, makes a difference.
We started with the gel-cream, applying the lotion on the back of our legs. The cream sinks in fast, is not sticky (YES)…and is as easy to use as a moisturizer. We used it once a day…after our shower…but Good-bye Cellulite can be used 2x a day too.
We don’t know if the tightening effect is permanent…but it def made our skin look smoother to our eyeballs.
Nivea touts L-Carnitine as the “it” ingredient that “helps reduce the appearance of cellulite.”
We know L-C as a supplement… it purportedly helps burn unwanted body fat. Makes sense to us that it might work topically too, as the skin absorbs practically everything one slathers on it.
Nivea sells Good-bye Cellulite Patches too…for “maximum results”---just slap’em on.
Conveniently, there’s a combo 30-Day Body Beauty Program that includes the Good-bye Cellulite Gel-Cream (6.7 oz) and a Dietary Supplement with the aforementioned L-Carnitine and Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA)… a fatty acid that according to Wikipedia…is known for it’s anti-cancer fighting properties and may help reduce body fat.
There’s a reason Nivea is one of those most respected body/skin care companies in the world…those Europeans always seem to get that stuff right.
We think the Good-bye Cellulite regimen is worth the $...online, we found the gel going for $9.99, the patches for $26.10 (per pack) and the 30 Day Combo going for $16.49 on Amazon.
BTW: Company has been around since 1911! And there's a Bikini Challenge going on!

SELVE SHOES: SPRING 2010

“THE LUXURY SHOE INDIVIDUALIZER”
Hotel Rome, Mitte
Berlin Fashion Week
July 3rd, 2009
Words, Images Judith Eocchard and Images Courtesy of Selve.
Customized shoes where the client can select the styles, heels and materials are an affordable luxury (300-400 Euros)…as we discovered.
The stately Hotel Rome, just across the street from the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Tent…was an elegant setting where the eight years old collection of Selve (pronounced sell-vay) Shoes…a Munich based company…was staged for fashion show attendees.
We met the founder Claudia Kieserling, who clued us in as to what her brand brings to the market…in a three week turnaround from scanning by state of the art Voram scanning technology, to order placed… to finished product.
First off, available in a wide range of sizes and widths, Selve shoes and a few handbag options, come in dozens of on trend styles for men and women…
Like chic peep toes, strappy sandals, pumps adorned with various magnetic clips, ankle booties, and our top pick-
over the knee boots for gals…all anointed with female names.
Snazzy golf shoes for men that come with footbed support and moisture wicking silver tech. lining had us wanting a pair.
Cool added touch…depending on if the golfer’s a lefty or a righty, the inlays are unique to give the best support…and waterproof.
Over 100 different types of leathers in all shades and types are (embossed, metallic, suede, calf leathers etc.) offered…with seemingly endless mix/match capabilities for uppers, second uppers, linings, outsoles and heel selections.
Every season, fresh styles are introduced …and the classics are spiced up with new color options.
We can see how bridal parties gravitate towards this collection.

G STAR RAW SPRING 2010
Bread & Butter, Berlin
Airport Tempelhof
July 1st, 2009
Words, Images Judith Ecochard
G-Star RAW, the denim based urban lifestyle brand had a separate tent out on the former runway of Berlin’s Tempelhof Airport where they staged several showings of the Spring 2010 line.
And we bet they were all as packed as our showing was.
Two female harpists plucked away as edgy streetwear and preppy casual looks romped the runway in a well chereographed show...that's always an event..
Black, White and a sea blue turquoise are the dominant colors…for the three distinct lines: the Correct Line (hip tailored separates), the Midnight collection (evening appropriate)…and the P.T. Army line---rugged sportswear.
…with a tennis worthy white vest board short length cuts for guys, and cool jeans that fit with a swagger---and with plenty of pocket details, our fav masculine looks.
Gals got rather stylish outfits, including a swing skirt with a short matching jacket, denim minis, vests…that one could wear them work.
But of course, the denim choices were the highlights…
We will more extensively review this collection during New York’s Fashion Week.

STRELLSON-BREAD & BUTTER TRADESHOW, BERLIN

July 3rd, 2009
Airport Berlin-Tempelhof,
“INNOVATIVE FASHION FOR A NEW GENERATION OF MAN”
Words, Judith Ecochard
Bread & Butter, a massive urban and streetwear tradeshow served up hundreds of exhibitors showing their Spring 2010 collections.
We were particularly keen on discovering worthy European brands that are practically unheard in the USA…because of lack of distribution, or in these times, maybe capital to jump the Pond into the lower 48- with a big splash.
We got a tip on Strellson, a handsome, line of Sportswear –including the Swiss Cross collection--- and Premium urbane separates, denim, knitwear, leather goods, kickers, eyewear, hosiery, swimwear… etc for modern “confidant, successful, trustworthy” guys, ages 25-40ish--- with style.
Strellson is distributed in forty countries…including Canada- so we were a bit embarrassed as to why we never heard of the brand. Especially since they outfit the Real Madrid football (soccer ) players and we are MAJOR FANS of that team!
Right off, we were reminded of Hugo Boss…that makes sense as we learned the label was founded by former HB owners, Uwe und Jochen Holy...in 1984. It is currently owned by the Holy Fashion Group that manufacturers plenty of well known labels.
We got educated on the Strellson Swiss Cross collection first. This affordably priced line is inspired by technical sportswear design elements- but is produced for casual, everyday wear…with cosmopolitan flair.
The quality of fabrics (a leather/latex used in a jacket for example) and finishing details, like button holes, contrast stitching, seams well finished…bump this collection head over heels above other similarly targeted menswear lines…similarly priced.
And the styles were en vogue without being ridiculous, avoiding the worse elements of sloppy casual wear (like ridiculous low waist, baggy pants, shapeless shirts) etc.
And so NOT old school looks better suited for an older generation.
There was plenty to like in this lifestyle brand. Wearable and comfy, oversized knit cardigan sweaters and vests in handsome argyle prints (hello 60’s), 100% cotton polos, trim button downs, and a cool dark denim blazer caught our attention.
Retailers were really responding to the 100% cotton, crew neck stripped sweaters- cleverly printed on the inside…
… and the look for Fall…done for Spring too…a black biker jacket, done in washed leather.
This was also a waterproof active jacket with details like inner pockets and taped seams, and fun tees…part of the “Music Is My Radar” collection.
A real bummer for us- that no pictures were allowed ANYWHERE. We don’t get this as we always take pics at tradeshows in the States…in fact, exhibitors send us jpegs before we can photoshop anything.
But we digress.
We also took in the Premium line …
There’s a different color story each month, for this urban, upscale collection that has business worthy separates- that can be effortlessly mixed and matched. Or idiot proof clothes as we like to call it.
This collection is well thought out…with a look that “creates tension” between matt and shiny fabrics like nylon, formal details on casual pieces, and balanced proportions…like a slim fitting blazer with looser fit trousers.
Blood red, a grayish blue, as well as basic colors like black…start off the hues for Spring 2010.
An attractive green (kinda a mashup between army green and gray) is set for attire delivered later on. We saw a super leather jacket in this shade.
Pale peach and brown shades---as seen on nappa leather- and versatile, lightweight washed linen jackets (lined in dark gray)…are work friendly, dapper cover-ups for cooler temps or heat waves.
Deliberately, these colors mesh well with each other…solid separates to build a wardrobe.
STYLE ALERT:
What’s new is the jacket length…74 cm versus 78cm. But not to worry for the metric system clueless (us). This is not a dumb shrunken schoolboy length. With the slim cut--- the jacket totally works.

An historic theater off a cobblestone courtyard packed with alfresco diners…was the setting for Frida Weyer’s decidedly 100% FEMALE ensembles for Spring 2010.
With a glass of bubbly in hand, we took our seats at a table arranged cabaret like alongside the runway.
This being Berlin Fashion Week, we figured something creative would open the show…and sure enough, a trapeze artist performed an amazing Olympic Gold Medal worthy routine…without a net.
The collection itself was chockfull of frilly and at times, very ornate frocks for ladies---compared with the pared down aesthetic we saw in other collections.
Appropriately styled updos and red lips on the models set the tone for frothy, fun mini dresses and a fifties style silhouettes to walk the catwalk.
We loved the colors…white, black, sea turquoise, pale beige, and barely there pink.
Oversized organza flowers dominated some of the sassy silk mini dresses-a style best suited to the young.
We highly favored the elegant white lace overlay on a black bodice of a strapless dress and on a slim skirt…vintage inspired style but absolutely timeless when done well.
Fringes galore, and tulle under a wedding cake trapeze skirt…led us to believe that this designer’s clearly crafts outfits for nighttime glamorous outings and brides.

Kai Künhe has managed to create womenswear that firmly ranks right up there with other sophisticated designers …and is one of the few German fashion veterans to succeed on both sides of the Atlantic under his own eponymous label.
Appropriately, Kühne ended the official Mercedes Benz Fashion Week runways shows with a well edited grouping of very modern clothing for young and older women.
The show began with techno pop music keeping the beat for models with slicked back hair, tuning the world out…via headphones,
or MAYBE from out of this world…wearing contact lenses that might have been left over from the movie Twilight---vampire-like.
Ah, so Berlin, we thought of that David Bowie/Brian Eno phase when we were growing up.
The first few looks- slim silhouetted dresses, and separates (strapless bodices, skirts, short shorts) were works of fit perfection, with bands, straps, cutouts, geometric seams... revealing skin and enhancing the female form/curves of the body----- but never vulgar. Very 21st Century…and polished.
It brought to mind 90’s Versace and Leger who evolved the concept of bondage dresses straight outta the world of S&M.
PLUS: Sculptural heels and the black/white/gray tones that seem to deepen the ‘feel’ of the sumptuous textiles.
The second half of the show, we felt, displayed looks that would appeal to an older clientele and/or professional women who need to cover up a bit. A shiny silvery pencil skirt with a sharp, cap sleeve white blouse, draped folds on white trousers with a to the hip fitted matching jacket that balanced the ensemble, a sparkling spring coat over a high waist leather skirt, and a sharp, embossed black leather skirt suit… all managed to be sexy and appropriate.
And expensive---- as the fabrics were luxe and the tailoring obviously done in Europe by skilled hands. No puckered seams, hanging threads, models fitted to their outfits.
Accessories were few…sunglasses, oversized necklaces…![]()
![]()
ADDED PLUS: The soundtrack of Karen Carpenter crooning “We’ve Only Just Begun” for the finale.
Loved the sentiment but we thought how ironic that one of our favorite singers tragically died from an eating disorder ---with all the hype about models starving themselves to be the right sized, living hangars for clothes.

DEANOOR FASHION SHOW: SPRING 2010
Malaysian Fashion Designer Datin Noor Fatimah Debuts In Berlin

Well, we thought, after the first diaphanous gown flowed down the runway.
Get the dress, all we need is the yacht and the lifestyle!
Gaughin would be proud of the luxurious hand painted fabric art- that is a trademark of the Deanoor collection…
Seriously, everyone sitting near us was simply wowed by the runway show.
The label is run by one gracious lady, Datin Noor Fatimah, the designer and owner of this 23 years old fashion house.
The silhouettes of the clothes, to quote the press release “…are kept classic to flaunt the stunning fabrics.”
The Italian silk, bias cut clothes that flatter all female forms, really came to life via the “explosion of colors” that were inspired by the designer’s home country Malaysia.
Apparently, the Deanoor collection is very well known in Asia. We can see how “her exclusive clientele” are drawn to these sumptuous fluid dresses, cocktail length frocks and breezy caftans…
We just can’t figure out how any lady decides which one to buy.
And kudos to the hair/makeup artists. The updos and polished makeup were perfect.

Gidde Up.
Or as cribbed from the show’s notes:
“The only way to get ahead is to dare. The vibrant colour of action not the drab grey of theory.”
Sounds like a very "present" statement---and being in the moment types...maybe that's why these are the kind of clothes we would wear.
As American Western/Country tunes kept the beat, cowboy hat topped or flowing long hair models strutted the easy wear attire of Strenesse Blue, the line designed by Creative Director Viktoria Strehle.
These are clothes that have international appeal…and there was plenty we saw that should sell across borders.
For Spring 2010, earth tones (brownish red, orange, sand), stone grays, blues…and metallics ruled the runway in separates made from plush nappa leather, soft washed satins and dabs of sequins.
We loved the cuts of the sleeveless and long sleeve one piece jumpsuits with utilitarian details in belts and pockets.

A double breasted coatdress and u neck tank tops mix matched with tailored shorts suit, low belted skirts, or slim fitted above the ankle trousers- give even office drones viable wardrobe options.

And the fun youthful garb- like the short shorts that should only be seen on the long legged types
...and the sleeveless frocks -all gave a polished bump up to casual wear…attire that decidedly took a turn towards sloppy in the States with all that shredded denim, slouchy boyfriend attire.

FINAL THOUGHTS: Clean, modern with little frills-(no ruffles, calico prints, or fringes that Happy Trails rider Dale Evans or Nicki of Big Love would have worn)…
ADDED PLUS; The oversized hobo shaped carryalls for gals on the go.
HAIR, MAKEUP= Pretty and Polished.

Showroom- J. Ecochard
Kilian Kerner is one of Germany’s famous fashion designers. We had seen last year’s collection – which was great—so we were curious as to what would walk down the runway this year.
Inspired by "stories from a diary” –an anonymous five entries in English--- or as Timm Süßbrich-sales manager of Kerner’s showroom rep, Deluxe Distribution explained to us, the apparel is a reflection of “one special situation…an encounter with one special person…”
We felt we were viewing two different shows…a tale of two cities…
…as the ladies’ looks were sophisticated, posh separates and dresses made of stunning fabrics like silk, silk jersey, cotton, and leather…
…while the men’s looks were mostly dark toned casual, for all the young dudes (short jackets, to the knee slim shorts) or urbane office ready (white button downs Oxford shirts, dark blue, charcoal sharp shoulder, short-and long suit jackets-some without lapels, tailored trousers, )
---the guys garb reminded us of apparel conjured up by Victorinox and Thom Browne.

Honestly, the male equivalent of tight Bermuda shorts is an item of clothing that doesn’t sell well in the States…we think sometimes it ventures into that overgrown schoolboys. But we are sure Europeans love it.
Naturally, we loved the feminine options. The show started with the band Mor/La/Peach performing what we call Euro Pop (singer, guitarist and taped soundtrack).
Then the RTW started down the catwalk…with a drop dead gorgeous gold jumpsuit …that’s also featured in the Lookbook (pictured).
Other top ladies looks included the dresses…both the long billowing evening gowns in white and metallic gold, and a stunning olive green delicately layered silk chiffon cocktail frock.
There was also a lacy patterned sheer coverup over solid black frock that exemplifies Kerner’s abilities to refresh the wardrobe staple LBD.
And a striking circle pattern nicely used on a sheer black top....
And because we took the time to visit the showroom, we were able to see the pony skin laser cutouts of halter blouse that was shown with a black suit with a peaked shouldered jacket (and also similarly embellished at the elbows)--- over fitted above the knee bottom.
TOP PICK:… a crisp white tailored shirtdress that was handsomely belted. This is a classic to wear everywhere.![]()
Skinny high waist leather trousers and an adorable metallic leather mini skirt are both seasonless and versatile.
A cropped green leather modified biker jacket- is really one of the better examples of this popular look that we’ve seen.
In general, Kerner's S/S 2010 is modern and classic…and well made attire. We also heart the satchels and belts…collaboration with Anja Bruhn.
SPECIAL NOTE: The esteemed ceramics manufacturer and Sponsor Villeroy & Boch crafted the catwalk out of durable gleaming tiles.

GALA MAGAZINE FASHION BRUNCH FOR SPRING 2010 FASHION WEEK
HOTEL ELLINGTON, Schöneberg
Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, Berlin
July 4th, 2009
11:00 AM
Words, Images Judith Ecochard
Last summer’s celebration was so much fun- that this confab of movers and shakers, Berlin style, put on by Gala Magazine is an outing we knew not to miss.
For Statesiders, Gala Magazine is a ‘printed on newsprint,’ lifestyle read that’s chock full of great pics and tasteful short commentary on the comings and goings of celebs, models, royalty (hey, it’s Europe), fashion and beauty products, major charity events and this week, sadly, Michael Jackson.
It was a sunny warm day---and guests had the difficult choice of which delicious buffet tidbit to sample while sipping champagne on the jammed outdoor courtyard, kitted out with tables, loungers and couches- protected with oversized umbrellas…
…or in an air-conditioned upstairs room with a handsome wooden, mirror backed bar plying espresso drinks.
We had a terrific conversation with Maybelline New York’s Top Creative/Artistic guru-Boris Entrup---who was so busy every time we were backstage.
He was particularly keen on the High Heel Mascara (sold as Stiletto in the USA) that magically lengthens and conditions without clumping, stays put…but easily washes off.
Green Antique Jade eyeshadow with a High Pearl sheen are also a favorite shade of his for Spring 2010
SARAH NURU -GERMANY's NEXT TOP MODEL
We also ran into our buddy Gerrit Schulz who has worked the fashion shows in Paris and New York as well as Berlin. Here is was magically conjuring up luscious locks for all, courtesy of L'Oreal.
He raved about the new Shu Uemura Art of Hair products (must try).
As mentioned in our Anja Gockel’s clip, we had a nice chat with this major talent…and her staff.
We loved her outfit …and the necklace by
Zara Lea La Motte.
SPECIAL MENTION:
Two talented musicians played separately…Mariha
and Dennis Lisk…both backed by full bands.
They deserve a broader audience. Even brunch attendees who were not familiar with either singer/songwriters, gathered round, entranced by the tunes.
SPECIAL THANKS: Talented Maybelline New York makeup artist Sandra Cevtert who gave us a weather proof maquillage. (Pictured with Boris).
SPONSERS: Yalook.com and the clever faces shaped from clothes… and LG ELECTRONICS

MONGRELS IN COMMON SPRING 2010
“SEXY... COOL”
Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, Berlin
Bebelplatz, Mitte
July 2nd, 2009

Words, Images Judith Ecochard
We got marching orders from a fashionista gal pal who hails from NYC via Paris. “Do not miss Mongrels In Common.”
We weren’t familiar with the label but liked the concept because as typical native New Yorkers, we are composed of three different ethnic groups. So too are the designers Livia Ximénez-Carillo and Christine Pluess (hence the name) who met at Esmod School of Design in Berlin and launched the collection in 2006.
We had a third row seat for the RTW show but got an up close. leisurely look at the garb/accessories later in the day at the open Deluxe Distribution showroom that reps the brand.
Half seriously, the congenial (and fluent English speaking) Timm Süßrich told us that Ximénez-Carillo and Pluess “do it for the money and FUN.”
Perfect motivation IMHO.
With a nod to the eco…laboriously refinished salmon skin as trim, in the “super expensive” satchels and as the basis of inserted bra cups, pants and jackets - was used---and M in C is the first European label to use it.
We felt the leather---it feels a bit like eel/stingray…a bit stiffer/ thinner than buttery high-end Italian leathers…but still pliant and comfortable against the body.
A luxe punk attitude romped the runway…the models had side swept lush shiny hair (elegant) and bold yellow safety pins piercing the exposed ear (gggrrrrrrrrrll)…
Mongrels In Common offered edgy separates like skinny pants, and peaked shoulder suit jackets mixed up with mod takes on the basics like super trench coats.
What we really admired was the way the designers expertly used geometric like panel of fabrics-for a clean, slim silhouette (think Narcisco Rodriguez),
and of matte/shiny fabrics (a deep beige sleeveless number….
PLUS softer feminine options-as in a mini petal black skirt and an airy white blouse.
In the show room we got to see some of the fab pin collar long sleeve shirts with a the safety pin as top closure…that’s perfect for that sexy secretary look that never goes out of style.
Bold gold hardware via exposed zippers were decorative and functional—and provided nice contrasts to silk black frocks…and cropped, fitted pants and a leather pair.... like a modern day chic Audrey Hepburn.
This label should do well if it ever crosses the Pond…depending on how that Euro/US Dollar ratio plays out.
WE COVET: THE BAGS!!!!!
Boxer Vladimir Klitschko got the photographers all excited.

DESIGNER FOR TOMORROW: ROUND TWO- SPRING 2010, Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, Berlin

Germany in general, and Berlin specifically- have cups that runneth over with fashion talent. There are several domestically based design schools, let alone universities located in nearby countries…that graduate scores of creative types.
It’s giving these fashion practitioners a leg up in the biz (connections, business know how, and money)-that is the mission of the Designer For Tomorrow award. And it all came down to a runway show where the finalists staged a well-edited catwalk extravaganza-consisting of five looks.
We favored some designers …but there was not a weak link in the bunch…everyone deserved to ‘stay on the island.’
The competition was very tough…with 8 finalists selected from the 150 portfolios submitted, according to Hanne Stürmann, from Public Relations of P & C…who we met between shows at the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week tent.
The winner, Berlin resident Sam Frenzl delivered sophisticated and elegant separates-in a collection titled "nuite blanche"--- that referenced some 80’s styles (think Claude Montana, Thierry Mugier)…with fresh takes on neutral toned mixed textures and fabrics that reminded us of why we worship at the altar of Christian Lacroix .
Silhouettes were balanced between volume and slim pairings. A terrific long white jacket with peaked shoulders (that look was all over the Fall 2009 runways) worked over sheer glimmering silver gray harem shaped trousers.
And a bubble dress, with a sheer top (epaulets of fabric at the shoulder)…was perfectly accessorized with a wide belt and what looked like intricate leather leggings with cutouts over croc skin "hoisery." (Picture at top)
This fusion of exotic skins with delicate fabrics is sumptuous.
We love the varying shades of gray too-a color that works on many skin tones.
There was also a feminine chiffon gown that showed great skill in draping (hello Madame Grès) held up by three pyramid shape crystals as the neckline. WOW. No jewelry required.
Prior finalists had runway collections this season…and we expect that we will see Fall 2010 attire from all candidates next year.
ABOUT Peek & Cloppenburg KG Düsseldorf:
An 100 years old, family owned retailer in Europe, P & C operates 65 stores in Europe. It’s tag-the “middleman between the catwalk and the boardwalk”- comes to life in their architecturally distinct store that sell over 500 labels…including some unique/exclusive designer labels.
We were impressed with everyone we met that worked with this retailer…and applaud how the company’s website has a separate Environment and Ethics section.

ANJA GOCKEL – LONDON SPRING 2010

“THE REAL LIFE OF ANGELS”
Bebelplatz, Mitte
Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Berlin
July 2nd, 2009
12:00
Words- Judith Ecochard
Images-J. Ecochard and Courtesy of Designer
Born in Germany, Anja Gockel –like so many Europeans- is a woman of the world. She received a Masters in Fashion Design at the prestigious Central Saint Martins in London…and has labored at labels ranging from Vivienne Westwood to Agatha Ruiz De La Prada.
Oh, and speaks four languages and has four kids.
Which all goes a long way to explaining the easy mix of sporty and glam that we saw in her sophisticated RTW show of day and “Red Carpet” eveningwear.
Thematically speaking, we got a clue as to whom the ‘Angels’ are when we chatted with Anja Gockel (and her team)…at the fab Gala Brunch at the Hotel Ellington…a few days after the show.
“The real angels are here on earth…we are here,” the designer informed us. “It’s not in a romantic way…but it is about doing things to make us-and others- happy.”
In other words (like the press release)-“They are women like ‘You and Me.’
“Their feet are firmly on the ground and radiate something that can hardly be described.
They mesmerize us with their inner and outer beauty.”
We loved the mixture of textiles like the clever mix of sparkling gold sequins (in a skirt, one shoulder blouson-for example) with more casual white trousers or silk cotton knits-in a deep v-neck lightweight sweater for example, in one look. Specifically the look Gockel was rockin’ at the Brunch.
This is the way real women dress…a fusion of day to night attire...with separates “one can dress up or dress down.”
“I design everything to work great with jeans,” Gockel said. Which is terrific because that’s practically all we wear---very “California Formal.”
TOP PICKS:
We are particularly drawn to the “exotic ray” print, the black/white combo, and the painterly floral patterns “sketched over ink-blue illustrations” we saw in various formations.
Solids- black, satiny green, and white tones in trousers, blazers, skirts are modern separates that will work in any wardrobe.
WEAR IT NOW:
The slim silhouette in a flattering ruched/draped dress with an asymmetrical neckline.
Gockel ended the show with knockout dramatic long gowns of with floating trains. And because there is a distinct practical side to the collection (i.e. one can wear the clothes, not suffer in them) …the models-in a nonchalant manner- draped the trains on one arm, as if oversized shawls, for their final bows.

LALA BERLIN SPRING 2010
“20’s Porn”: The New Dance On The Volcano”
Bebelplatz, Mitte
Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, Berlin
July 2nd, 2010
Words, Images- Judith Ecochard
We were thinking more jet-set chic than pornography for Lala Berlin’s triumphant S/S 2010 collection.
But we got the reference to the 1920’s era of women’s liberation in terms of dress (the shorter, less restrictive garb of Flappers, gender equality, sexual liberation) that conjures up jollier times than some of the economic doom and gloom that no one can avoid these days.
Designed by Tehran born Leyla Piedayesh, (Lala Berlin-a knickname), this upscale urbane brand served up thirty six ensembles---and was one of the strongest outings we’ve seen-ANYWERE---
The collection reminded us of Donna Karan in the way women will want everything---because it’s contemporary, sophisticated attire that will make them LOOK FABULOUS.
Lala Berlin’s signature feather light knits –including a “Floating Cardigan” over a tank dress (Look 11), as well as several panel cardigans and a chunky knit coat were stunning…
What knocked us out of our seats?
The amazing fabrics -including the last outfit…an intricately gold riveted/white silk jacket over a “Dots” tank dress. That fabric was also used in a mini skirt (Look 27)
that had us wondering what the acclaimed NYC dry cleaner, Madame Paulette…would charge us to clean
Wow…
Lala Berlin’s expert tailoring skills and familiarity with how silk and stretch materials (diagonally) drape and move on the body---was evident. Dressy Bermuda shorts with tunics, oversized black knit top that can work as a beach cover up or super mini, skinny jeans (including an embroidered white pair), a gold metallic over white silk on a racer back top, and several cocktail frocks were standouts.
Honestly though, there was plenty to covet.
We know Lala Berlin is sold in the USA –Ron Herman and H. Lorenzo in Los Angeles for example...
…we think that this label really should be better known here.
In Germany, it rules for good reasons. We saw 36 of them ourselves.

PATRICK MOHR SPRING 2010
Bebelplatz, Mitte,
Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, Berlin
July 1st, 2009
18:00
Words, Images- Judith Ecochard
A shimmering silvery runway, spotlit with pedestals sportin’ what we call streetwear/ lifestyle shoes (we assume a collaboration with show sponsor Reebok)…had us thinking, okay this is going to be an edgy urban collection.
So NOT in the way we were thinking.
After the show was over--- we thought it all got ‘Lost In Translation.’
And chatting with other fashion editors – from Europe---they seemed baffled too… by what transpired on the catwalk…and they weren’t going to write up the show.
But, our brain cells were churning so we were not dismissing Patrick Mohr’s S/S 2010 to the back burner
…and maybe that was the point.
Truth be told, we thought the largely earth tone ensembles walking down the runway, while elaborate (protective geometrical shapes, different textures/textiles, challenging proportions)…look liked costumes from the latest Star Wars movie.
Clearly there was a “statement” being made here. We just didn’t know what it was.
Later, we did some homework and learned that the cat walkers, while obvious that most weren’t professional models…were homeless and lived in shelters.
So we guess that there were philosophical underpinnings mashed up in the presentation here.
The models themselves were wearing the denim from Mohr’s line with Quadrangle Jeans –there wasn’t a ‘run-of-shows’ – but we figured this was the retail angle…as well as the footwear.
Because staging runway shows ain't cheap!

AN OPEN AIR TERRACE PRESENTATION OF EUROPEAN COLLECTION

Berlin Fashion Week
What a pleasure to see a collection of sandals and shoes---in a relaxed setting on the river.
We didn’t know what to expect after the courteous Mercedes Benz Fashion Week driver dropped us off outside a renovated brick building somewheres in the former East Berlin.
A quick elevator ride led to a breath if fresh air, literally--- light filled space where we were surprised by the selection/variety of kickers we saw.
No wonder…these comfy and stylish sandals and shoes from Scholl, may never arrive in the USA.
We were familiar with the basic flats –the original exercise sandal (over 50 years old)--- and the brand Dr. Scholls that offers up a series of foot products to heal all aching/ailing feet.
…But really liked the cork heel and wooden platform leather sandals and flats set to hit many worldwide stores next winter…
And amusingly, there was a slow-mo catwalk where well shod legs slowly strolled across a white space--- with the latest.
Guess a jaunt across the Pond -or an online visit---is necessary to view/purchase the entire line.

SCHUMACHER SPRING 2010
20th ANNIVERSARY COLLECTION CELEBRATES WITH ELEGANT RUNWAY SHOW
Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, Berlin
Bebelplatz, Mitte -July 1st, 2009---10:00
Words, Judith Ecochard

Dorothee Schumacher’s has many reasons to celebrate…every single outfit of her Spring 2010 collection was terrific. An editorially tight focused lineup.
And what a great way to open Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, Berlin.
Truth be told, we were a bit jet lagged when we crawled into the huge white tent for this first catwalk show…
But we immediately perked up as soon as a feminine white jacket with puffed sleeves, paired with a smart taupe to the knee shorts---walked the runway.
This ensemble, as with all the outfits to follow, were refine, fitted, well tailored separates, including a knockout strapless sandy beige pantsuit...
or belonged to glamorous and graceful dresses that any woman can wear to work, on travels…and out for cocktails at the nearby stately Hotel De Rome, site of the posh, after show reception.
Most day looks were neutral toned – Camila White, Black Pearl, Whisper Blue, Cinammin Brown, Icy Gold, and Tempting Green...
…and therefore easy to wear with any skin tones…
…mixed in with bright pink Rock N' Rose and flourishes of gold/silver metallics and sequins for after hours.
Nothing flashy, just pure elegance.
These are clothes that individual women wear, not that wear the women so-to-speak.
Schumacher managed to show how a suit ensemble of to the knee shorts and a matching jacket can be just as business appropriate as any menswear inspired pants suit…and probably a very popular style given the high temperatures in many Western European cities where air conditioning is not a given.
A light/dark grap casual outfit and a silky dark gray dress with slouchy deep front pockets and a bold zipper front looked so comfortable…we could see this being our go to dress for many occasions. Tasteful and a modern attire for the gal that likes to multi-task in silk, linen, and cotton poplin.

Or for women who are “strong, clever…and charming.”
Even the strapless cocktail frock (fitted shiny gold up top with gleaming silk draped bottom) and the more formal, long evening gown (sparkling silver sequins bodice with taupe silk Grecian style bottom)…were timeless classics we feel would be suitable for wide age ranges of women…
NICE.

We’ve been to several eco-oriented/Fair Trade showrooms in the States…so we were very curious as to what the afternoon efforts by founders - Magdalena Schaffrin -(her own eponymous label) and Jana Keller -( head of RoyalBLUSH –“handbags with a conscience” handmade in Germany using vegetal tanned leather)…would serve up.
WOW! This presentation could never happen during New York Fashion Week,
THE SHOW:
As a classical harpist began playing… two black leotard/leggings clad modern dancers struck a pose with two classical statues…and then performed an ad-libbed modern dance around the courtyard, making full use of the greenery…and amazingly- incorporating or “staging” each item of clothing, a Dr Hauschka calming spray (sponsor) and yummy chocolates (sponsor) into the energetic show.
We really got into it, admired the creativity of it all…and so did everyone else.
Come to think of it, we can’t see this performance/runway show taking place anywhere else but Berlin.
It was difficult for us to tell what item of clothing belonged to what label. There was a four day suite upstairs where the press could see the 15 or so labels up close and in person ...
We had no time though.
We can say we recognized SEA BAGS right away- an American brand from Maine--- we’ve written about before…that uses old sail clothes and refashions them into carryalls.
RoyalBLUSH, a leather handbag collection was also used as a prop…
As for the clothing…there was a fantastic lace up the back long white (organic cotton?) long coat .
Also a whispy bolero (probably by Blushless, an organic line of bridal wear made from new materials the old fashion way)…
A handsome dark gray jacket by So Pure, a German label helmed by former bankers and biz consultants.
And a sumptuous silk royal blue caftan with Tahitian tinged splashes straight out of a nature wonderland was also lovely.
Also participating was the major label Hessnatur, an earth friendly (organic) clothing line founded thirty years ago by Heinz Hess. Hessnatur has the respected fashion veteran Miguel Androver at the helm of all things creative now.
And the accompanying press release quotes Androver:
“A social message has always been necessary in my design. There is no more important message than taking care of nature and human beings. This is what hessnatur does. It is their essence – and mine.”
AMEN.

CUSTO BARCELONA SPRING 2010

“LOWXURY”
BOLD COLORS-SPLASHY PRINTS IN AN AFFORDABLE LINE
Bebelplatz, Mitte, Berlin
July 2, 2009, 20:00
Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, Berlin
Words, Judith Ecochard, Images Courtesy of Designer and J. Ecochard
We got an early scoop on the fashion veteran Custo Dalmau…and his poppin’ Spring 2010 collection, a lineup we usually see in September during NY’s fashion week.
Founded by brothers, Custo and David back in 1980, the California surf vibe meshed with the ooh la-la of Spain triumphantly strutted down the runway last week.
And yes, the designer MADE IT WORK....
WHAT’S NEW:
Smart label that they are, Custo Barcelona introduced “LOWXURY,” created to define the most sophisticated line…is sustainable…affordable glamour…with a twist of irreverent humor.”
Cool.
“A FEW OF OUR FAVORITE THINGS”
We channeled Julie Andrews hitting the high notes (SOUND OF MUSIC) when we read the show’s inspiration list.
We expected nothing less than the exuberant rich colors and prints that are characteristic of the line.
This collection found image inspirations from a wide range of entities…like “a lady’s dressing table, galloping horses, peacock feathers, microscopic plants and animals, fairy tale characters, dolls and Bengal tigers mix with girl explorers, surf chicks and eastern ladies, tropical flowers and leaves, pineapples and pansies, kittens and animal prints.”
“Irregular stripes and lines, oriental borders and rosettes, pop prints and red lips form the main graphic element, together with letters and messages, signs and postage stamps. Cupids from a variety of traditions, lovebirds, butterflies and dragonflies are the most romantic element, while skulls in Elvis wigs (!?!), pot smoking Jamaicans, and veteran boxes bring a touch of humor.”
WE THINK: ---“…what a long strange trip it’s been.”
Seriously though, this collection was a winner. Dalau must have used so many different fabrics, we were so impressed how it all worked so well-in terms of draping (silky, shimmy viscose knits), lace (vintage flourish), open weave stretch Particular in long 20’s style frocks one can MOVE IN), seeksucker, linen (dapper men's blazers), punched leather and jerseys.
We saw the harem/dropped crotch pants here ---a lot of in Berlin, actually. We remember Hammer Time so not our fav. But C.B.’s version in a metallic textile looked right.
We favored the canvas, knee/calf patched “biker” pants…that looked snazzy with the strapless tops…and the stretched smocked tops.
Mini trenches over mini skirts, tunics and blouses, and the jumpsuits that all walked by in a swirl of kaleidoscopic colors…are also winners.
And our top looks were the long boho vibe dresses and the one piece maillot swimsuits,
The dresses had enough ruching/smocking to make them fun and young in spirit…not frumpy, grandma style.
And the men looked good too…we love the designer’s outfit ---with a deep v-neck on under a tasteful and eye-catching blazer. It’s all about balance.
We think a lot of guys can pull this look off and look handsome, not ridiculous.
WHAT ELSE IS NEW: The elegant new women’s fragrance by Custo Barcelona (by expert Alberto Morillas)…samples of which were given out at the show.
INFO: CUSTO BARCELONA
ADDED PLUS: The kinda goofy German dudes (sponsor types) we sat next to…had us laughing.

MICHAEL SONTAG SPRING 2010
CLEAN LINES FOR MODERN WOMEN
Bebelplatz, Mitte, Berlin
Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, Berlin
July 3rd, 2010
Words, Judith Ecochard
Images courtesy of Designer
Michael Sontag was a new fashion designer for us.
He is well known in Germany, natch-- “as a high flyer with prospects” according to Elle magazine.
This young talent was also a finalist at the VERY competitive and prestigious Designer of Tomorrow award.
We thought his collection was exceptional and importantly, easy to wear for many different types of women (and their various body shapes).
Unlike most of the slim, fitted outfits, at times kicked out with lots of frou frou-that we saw, Sontag showed a spring palette of flowing silks in day to night ensembles, cut with enough of a line as to make it interesting. And obviously by a designer who understands how fluid fabrics move.
All attire we saw--- can work 'on there own' for a clean aesthetic (hello Calvin Klein of yore),
Or the separates lend themselves to any assortment of fancy bling or ethnic accessories that most gals already have in their wardrobe.
VERSATILITY!
Sontag hails from Germany….but we felt this collection had quite the international flavor…essentially borderless.
LAST THOUGHT: The kind of clothes that need to be tried on and seen on the body. On a hangar in a bricks and mortar shop…the clothes may not grab one’s eyeballs. IMHO.

MCM – THE MICHALSKY COLLECTION
SPRING 2010
Premium Tradeshow, STATION, Berlin
July 1st, 2009, 13:00
Words, Images Judith Ecochard
We were literally stopped in our tracks by the WOW collection of satchels and clutches-that comprise the cobra skin laden (Michael) Michalsky Collection for high-end label MCM.
This luxury brand with global distribution---really bumps it up with a “1980’s feel that plays and respects our heritage,” according to Adrian Margelist, MCM’s artistic director…who we got a chance to chat with.
Some of the bags are handmade in Germany the old fashion way- but the bold hardware “…is modern and puts it (the collection) forward into the 21st century.”
Other Spring 2010 samples were soft in construction…”more pouchy…you want to sleep on it.”
As expected with a well priced brand, the details are outstanding…from the twisted leather handles, panels linked without stitching (liked locking one’s fingers) and the new logo for the higher priced groups, with a faceted deep purple crystal, personally designed by Margelist.
We loved the Dandelion Yellow lineup for Spring…which will certainly punch up any outfit.
And the signature logo collection gets playful perky graphics ---similar to Louis Vuitton additions.
SPECIAL THANKS: The totes given out to attendees came courtesy of MCM---LOVE ..and to Eric Erhardt, Regional GM Europe, Deputy Global Commercial Director for his time.
SHIPS: After Christmas 2009. IMHO...missed opportunity!

MARCEL OSTERTAG: SPRING 2010
RUNWAY CHIC INSPIRED BY NATURE
July 1, 2009
Bebelplatz, Mitte
Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Berlin
12:00 Noon
Words, Images Judith Ecochard
“We are taken on a sensual journey which is determined by hundreds of feelings. We feel the heat, the light, and the cold, the wind, and the darkness…”
When we first caught sight of MARCEL OSTERTAG's work at last summer’s Berlin Fashion Week- he earned a prestigious award against stiff competition...based on that outing...and we were impressed.
And our NYC fashionista friends were really impressed too.
The Spring 2010 Runway show was really lovely, divided into upscale casual daytime (beige, sand dusty pink, green, khaki light toned palette) and evening (dark black with glowing embellishments of Crystallized™ Swarovki Elements) ensembles.
The printed diaphanous (we assume silk) fabrics were the highlights for us.
As in a dotted animal pattern mixed up with a cobra – like print on a sheer textile--- used in a tunic, blouse, frock and a long dress, accessorized by elegant satchels and oversized beaded necklaces.
There were many wearable looks for office workers as well as for the leisurely sort-
...in a beige well tailored cropped and harem style pants,
...and mini dresses with a light weight spring coat…that makes it all season-less dressing, using silk jerseys and lined linen.
A few green pieces…a horizontal stripped skirt with a swingy cropped jacket, and a silk parachute type pants with matching sleeveless top added some color to the largely neutral tone collection.
We can see on any woman- living in Rome or Miami or Kuala Lumpur for that matter...in these glamorous clothes.
FABULOUS LEATHER SATCHELS TOO

LAC ET MEL SPRING 2010

Applause well deserved. Click on Images to enlarge.
MERCEDES BENZ FASHION WEEK BERLIN
Hotel Ellington, Schöneberg, Berlin
July 1st 2009, 13:00
Words, Images
Judith Ecochard and Courtesy Lac Et Mel
A short bus ride away from Bebelplatz (site of last year’s S/S show)--- the refined, modern kitted out Hotel Ellington was the glam setting for the Lac Et Mel Spring 2010 fashion show.
What a difference a year makes.
The Lac Et Mel gal is all grown up now… with a sophisticated feminine wardrobe to match her lifestyle. Think of the morphing of the American fashion label Tuleh...for the uptown girl that used to party downtown...but much like her Gossip Girls younger siblings, now opts for more elegant settings.
Even the congenial designer himself, Gregor Clemens –who started out designing tees… looked positively dapper in his post show bow to attendees, outfitted in a handsome white blazer paired with denim…versus last year’s more casual threads.
Right off, we admired the striking arcade set of oversized white horizontal squares against a black backdrop---that defined the space…and added an element of drama to the presentation.
And the clothes themselves…well done.
We loved the sleeveless shifts the best. Our top pick was a fun, silk strapless summery frock in raspberry, a dynamic one strap silver top over a fitted black bottom… and an elegant pale brown one shouldered dress with a flirty ruffled hem.
A few fifties silhouettes, particularly the plaid, short sleeve tailored dress on Germany’s Next Top Model winner, Sara Nuru… had us thinking of the fashion icon, the American Claire Mc Cardell who made bias cut and tailored day dresses, and harem pants-flawlessly- with a relaxed but very posh vibe.
Billowing silk palazzo pants was perfectly paired with a deep coral sleeveless top with strap details. And Clemens continued his high waist trouser selections too.
Not that we ever doubted his tailoring skills, but BRAVO to Clemens for sending out a perfectly FITTED, ruched sleeveless cocktail number we would wear NOW!
The fabrics-sumptuous silks in particular popped with spring colors... both pretty pastels and bold, saturated colors…with a dash of black.
Hair and Make-Up: As polished as the clothes courtesy of TIGI and MAC cosmetics.
THANK-YOU: The delicious buffet lunch in the delightful courtyard. We couldn’t stay but trust us… we could have nabbed the lounger with a glass of bubbly…and been very happy.

HAMPTONS GOLF CLASSIC V Hosted By CHRIS DUHON
The Knick, The Housewife and The Giant
CHRIS DUHON BAGS A GAME WINNING BASKET FOR STAND TALL FOUNDATION
WORDS: Judith Ecochard, IMAGES Courtesy Of Hamptons Golf Classic
We weren't able to attend one of our fav golf events, the Hamptons Golf Classic...at the flawless Hampton Hills Golf and Country Club in West Hampton, NY----as we were on a plane to Berlin for S/S 2010 fashion week.
But as the day's a confab of athletes, locales and biz types that benefits a different (worthy) charitable cause every year...it deserve a clip.
Hosted by New York Knicks Point Guard-Louisiana native Chris Duhon, the event benefited his STAND TALL FOUNDATION...that's dedicated to helping kids in need through recreation---and in this instance---to rebuild basketball courts in New Orleans, destroyed during Hurricane Katrina. NY Giants Defensive End Justin Tuck and Hamptons Golf Classic Founder Zev Norotsky helped out hosting...with cameras popping for special guests included Real Housewives of New York City’s Jill Zarin as well as this year’s honoree, Richie Notar, Managing Partner of Nobu Restaurants.

ESTHER PERBANDT: SPRING/SUMMER 2010
TAKING IT TO THE STREETS OF BERLIN IN INSTRUMENTAL STYLE
Words, Images Judith Ecochard
July 4th 2009, 15:00
Almstadtstr, 3, 10119 Berlin
We arrived at the clean white gallery/boutique of Esther Perbandt, a German designer we reviewed as part of the Berlin Fashion Week S/S ’09…a bit over heated.
A welcome was felt before we even got through the door-as benches were set up offering cold drinks and yummy fresh fruit sorbet cones to fashion types and onlookers alike…
Up the stairs we went---for a quick review of the Spring/Summer 2010 collection, titled “instrumental” --- that employees were wearing…and on racks lining the space. Black, white, tomato red and a terrific bleached black print (“done by hand”) …on well-tailored, modern separates…plus some handbags with bold silver color hardware equaled a smart contemporary lineup.
We loved the intricacy of a fitted blazer- with folds and seams that could/should banish that over-talked boyfriend blazer to the back of one’s closet. Not that that ever caught on in Europe.
An airy cotton tunic with said print had multiple diagonal drapes in the front and back... practical and elegant item…one of those belt it and wear with hosiery and boots, throw over a pair of denim, or wear bare legged with strappy heels--- versatile pieces that work for day or night. Everywhere in the world.
But the best was yet to come.
THE ONLY HORN HONKING WE HEARD IN BERLIN:
Right in the middle of a crowded intersection-and just a short stroll from the boutique…a lively all female brass band, in the tradition of Cabaret…lined up across from the glam models swathed in Perbandt’s S/S 2010 collections.
And then the party started- with the musicians playing lively New Orleans style, swamp boogie tunes, and the well coifed gals joining in with a shout back chorus…bopping away. BRILLIANT!
And talk about traffic stopping. This would never fly in New York…but that is what’s so great about Berlin.
We could really see how the clothes moved on the body…and it made the fashion REAL!
What a great idea.
Some drivers, stuck in their cars--- were not amused. But everyone else got into it…and followed the ensemble down the street where they lined up on a sidewalk…for another catchy sing-a-long.
We had another show to attend…but we know the mass ended up around the corner at the boutique where the party continued.
So Cool!

WUNDERKIND BY WOLFGANG JOOP Fall/Winter 2009-Wunderkind Boutique
“THE GENESIS OF A DRESS”
Wunderkind Boutique Gendarmen-Markt, Markgrafenstrasse, 42
BERLIN, GERMANY
July 2, 17:00
One of the highlights of Berlin Fashion Week ALREADY- was our chat with the legendary German designer, Wolfgang Joop…and a chance to preview the F/W 2009 collection along side artwork by the acclaimed modern photographer Gregor Toerzs.
We felt privileged to meet this worldly icon of style…
The designer himself was so a friendly/gracious a host at his spacious store-- just a short stroll from the Bebelplatz/Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Tent.
AND-We saw a superb, couture like (we mean that) collection for F/W 2009…
THE COLLECTION:
According to the press release we received, the Wunderkind F/W 2009 collection “on one part refers to Suprematism, the abstract art movement founded in St. Petersburg in 1915, by Kazimir S. Malevich"…particularly his “Black Square” era (1923-29). The artist Sonia Delaunay served as an inspiration also…as seen in the line’s color palette of black, white, red, green, and blue.
How this translated into the clothes was through the basic colors and geometric/“abstract” and yes, complex---but flattering forms-both- tailored/masculine and soft fluid feminine garments…. a duality of garments that had many hand stitched elements as in contrast piping stitches-like a man’s Saville Row suit.
Our favorite grouping was the nature imaged frocks that boasted artful renderings of the photographs of the deer, stag, and cheetah that are part of Toerzs’ “Boy On Safari” B/W pictures--- that were suspended on the store’s walls.
Hand painted (?) black and white vertical stripes ( zebra ) on delicate coats splashed up with color squares were something we could have walked out of the store wearing. If it wasn’t so hot.
We spent many minutes oogling the inspiration “board” sketches that were under a long glass plate display case that lined the store.
“The collection is based on the aesthetic philosophy of design integrity, using the best natural materials and the highest craftsmanship showing mastery of the traditional methods of construction.”
Obviously, Wolfgang Joop is on another (higher) level…having reached a point in his life we he can envision and craft wearable clothes that reflect his singular vision. Refreshing.
OTHER FACTS:
Made in Italy (by Roscini) from -of course- deluxe fabrics (pure cashmere, wool mousseline, Japanese silks etc)…that are often exclusive fabric innovations and blends.
WHAT SURPRISED US:
Wolfgang Joop completely sold his Joop! GmbH line… c’est fini in 2001! …and is focusing on the magnificent Wunderkind collection of “suspense and surprise and fantasy…flirting with incongruity…[a mix of] traditional clothing with new fashion.” ---
Catching a bit of fresh air (there’s a heat wave in Western Europe-minus the American style A/C) ----Joop told us-unless it got “Lost In Translation”-- that he was in New York City for talks with the powers that be at Bill Blass! We have met the businessmen that own that label…American guys…and we can see why that potential pairing would not have worked out. At all!
Wolfgang Joop did buy Bill Blass’ old apartment the Big Apple in 1993…
FINAL TAKE:
We felt that Joop’s works is very personal, a true mark of someone who spent weeks thinking about ‘things.” Editorially speaking- it’s a cohesive collection…by a visionary man who appeals to very sophisticated women—a client base who can appreciate the hand finishes and extraordinary detail that goes into the ‘process’ of creating each garment. Though certainly not temperament wise, we were reminded of Ralph Rucci in that not your average consumer (or celeb) will ‘get’ the dresses and separates we saw.
We could not take pictures in the boutique…but did take a few storefront photos.
Like Dries Van Noten---a designer we thought of as we strolled through…this collection is avant-garde ---given today’s mass-market “luxury” market. We felt the F/W 2009- embraced artistic concepts of the past- merged with the modern-to create a distinct elegant collection for Wunderkind customers worldwide.

BREAD & BUTTER BERLIN: OPENING NIGHT
TEMPELHOF AIRPORT BERLIN/ COLUMBIAHALLE CONCERT WITH MANDO DIAO
June 30th, 2009
20:00
Words, Images Judith Ecochard
Berlin’s cutting edge Fashion Week SPRING 2010---that includes Mercedes Benz Fashion Week at the huge white tent set up at Bebelplatz, the Premium Tradeshow and the massive Bread & Butter Tradeshow ( the biggie for the European market)…got off to a rousing start, courtesy of the a fun concert by the Swedish garage style/rock band Mando Diao.
The hour-long, high-octane concert took place at the huge concert facility Columbia Halle, just 300 meters from the historic airport Tempolhof…where the hangars are now tricked out with masses of exhibitors showing contemporary attire for Spring 2010 and baggage claim is spinning with show totes..
Even the former air traffic control offices is worked out--- set up as a press lounge we only dream of replicating elsewhere…internet, computers, yum food, drinks-all kinds, and comfy lounge chairs. NICE.
Reason To Love It ALL:
As soon as we landed…we got it.
Berlin’s public transport is on time (duh-it’s GERMAN), SAFE, AND EASY TO FIGURE OUT…even for knackered journalists feelin’ the jet lag.
DOGS ALLOWED! So cute.
The swarms of humans squeezing through the checkpoints at the show (B&B badges or invitees only) were cool, calm and collected. And really hip looking.
Free beer, bubbly, Pepsi and water kept the masses saturated.
Naturally, the fat sausages and oversized pretzels were the grilled eats.
The Mayor of Berlin, KLAUS WOWEREIT—gave a short intro –in English and German…followed by an equally brief bunch of words by KARL-HEINZ MULLER, the leading light of Bread & Butter.
KARL-HEINZ MULLER-HEAD of B&B /KLAUS WOWEREIT-Governing MAYOR BERLIN
Appropriately, Muller screamed out “rock and roll”
And the energetic band plus two back up singers hit the stage for several loud and well-received rendition of their songs including their hit "Dance With Somebody." They sang in English too--- with toe tappin’ tunes about unrequited love and friendship...what we could pick out…our eardrums were exploding.
All ages turned out for this welcoming sendoff. We stood in the balcony next to a band member’s grandma who captured the whole thing on her camcorder…and outlasted us.
