ROJAS, THREADS 4 THOUGHT, GESTUZ, SAO PAULO
Garment Center, NYC June 29, 2009
We recently had a quick review of some of the trendy labels Agent R.E.D. showroom reps…in its spacious midtown loft in midtown Manhattan.
ROJAS is an edgy casual Los Angeles based label designed by fashion vet Freddie Rojas who has scooped up celebs and regular types as fans. And print editors too…half the samples were out on spec when we stopped by.
For Fall 2009, Holiday and Spring we did preview some well made and affordable separates. We really liked Rojas take on the popular plaids-in tunics, tops and minis.
THREADS 4 THOUGHT is a a best seller for the showroom. The comfy tees, leggings that look like jeans, and artist designed graphics we saw (men’s line) are hip, made in fair trade environments and made from ORGANIC or recycled fibers. Yeah!
PLUS; Two percent of sales, not profits…goes to the Natural Resources Defense Council and the International Rescue Committee.
GESTUZ is Danish line with a “laid back rock chick” and “feminist minimalist” attitude that translates well in the separates we saw..
Top picks…the leather looks and jumpsuits and hope to see more of the collection at the Bread and Butter trade show.
SAN PAULO is a collection that’s modern and fun…but we think the styles will appeal to a broad range of women.
Our favs are the long knit sweaters that are ridiculously low in price …every piece under $150.
Knit jerseys and stylish prints---on cute sleeveless frocks are also stylish.
We couldn’t find a website…but have a feeling this label will be catching on with buyers.

POETIC LICENCE Fall 2009/Spring 2010
SHOES THAT GRAB ATTENTION
Words, Images Judith Ecochard
For gals that plan their outfits around statement making footwear…
Poetic Licence is a fun collection worth scoping out.
As soon as we walked into the midtown showroom of this division of Consolidated Shoes, exuberant mixed patterns and bold color mashes grabbed our eyeballs.
Boots (an embroidered suede Persuade Me) and wedges, cork bottom peep toes, oversized hardware (zippers) and buckles are some of the distinctive details that we think…sets the brand apart form more conservative lines.
Especially at these price points...topping out at $199-$269 for boots and most shoes falling into the $99-$139 range.
For Spring 2010, look for jeweled sandals, contrast cross stitching, mixed fabrics (fabric/leather, suede/patent) and embellished snakeskin…to bump up t-straps, pumps, wedges and booties with sculptural heels.

MADELINE & NICOLE: Fall 2009/Spring 2010
“BRIDGING THE GAP BETWEEN HIGH STYLE AND AFFORDABILITY…”
FFANY-6TH AVENUE Midtown
Words, Images Judith Ecochard
MADELINE:
It’s hard to deliver inexpensive footwear-manufactured from manmade materials- that looks like it should cost a whole lot more.
Madeline, a fashion forward collection owned by Consolidated Shoes, manages to deliver the goods-with stylish affordability.
We had a quick run through the showroom and saw lots of flats, pumps, peep toes, and boots in trendy profiles- in on target colors and print patterns.
For Fall 2009 menswear inspired tie oxfords with stacked heels (Deedi) and cute fringed (Celsa) and ankle buckled booties (Sena) in faux leather respectively are easy to wear options with trousers, or jeans.
Up to the knee boots- with a wedge and a sample with slim strap, buckles at the calf and ankle (Railey) –make these fashionable kickers something more than just practical footwear to slog through winter slush.
Even the always “hot” snake skin pattern(image up top) gets animal friendly play in a heeled peep toe (Gabean).
For Spring 2010, mixed textures are well played in a multi strap wedge (Cheeky) platform sandal, buckled Cayli snakeskin pattern kitten heel.
Prices are amazingly top out at $79 for boots.
NICOLE:
A bump up in price from the aforementioned, Nicole offers quality shoes and boots for Fall 2009 and Spring 2010 for trend followers who might want to indulge in peds that’ll work year round.
Day to night options, kickers tricked out with mixed materials, and oversized detailing are highlights of what we saw.
At the showroom, retailers were favoring the Zig Zag bump toe flat with a stacked heel and big buckle detail.
We liked the all leather multi-strapped booties with contrasting toe/heel pieces (Behave), stacked heel oxfords, and the flexible over the knee boots that can fold over.
For Spring 2010, contrast stitching, cutouts and lined footbeds for comfort play big in snazzy peds.
Our favs are the updated gladiator type sandals with stacked heels and grommets and embossed leather details, and the Rock N Roll motorcycle boots.
Prices at the high end -$175 for the Over the knee Right Now boots, with shoes typically ranging from $79 up to $105.

“Everyday is a new look and at the end of the day, you can shake them off and they dry,” she told us.
Popular options of the easy to put on (via an adjustable elastic cinch with a button hole)--- include bold animal prints.

FRYE BOOTS, SHOES & ACCESSORIES
The Men's Wall of Fame
Tatoo Collection
AMERICA’s ICONIC KICKERS and CARRYALLS FOR SPRING 2010
FFANY June 10th 2009
Fifth Avenue, NYC
Words, Images Judith Ecochard
We were beyond excited to preview the massive Frye collection of peds and accessories during the recent FFANY tradeshow…a bi-annual gathering of exhibitors from around the world who descend on midtown Manhattan’s Hilton Hotel…or serve up their Big Apple showrooms to entice retail buyers…and thereby their customers…with apparel for the feet.
Ahhhh… no wonder women love shoes…and devote sizeable portions of precious living space to house them all ...and ovens as storage too.
WHAT WE SAW:
Lucky us, we got the first class tour with Michael Petry, the creative eye and very congenial guru of Frye boots and shoes. Naturally, he was one happy camper when we met up with him in the late afternoon…the feedback from the retailers was phenomenal.
Here’s why…
HOT TRENDS:
Neutral tones (natural, smoke, taupe, black, dark brown) continue to rule sales but for Spring 2010, saturated rainbow colors are being introduced. For women the super comfortable (squishy soft buffalo leather) Carson Pull Up and Shortie boots come in poppin’ turquoise and green shades for example.
“Grommets are hot,” according to Petry. Our fav studded up versions included the stacked heel Maya Vintage Stud Slingback and a slingback clog in Dusty Rose.
“And it’s very important to get a mix of flats,”- including the popular Drivers (Reagan Campus and Deco Stitch), the Mocs with outsole stitching (Reba Honeycomb) and Ballets (Emma Leather Lace),
Striking contrast stitching-“Deco Stitch” is a signature detail of Frye’s. The versatile, multi-strapped Grace Sling comes in assorted shades---and will work with our jeans, leggings, and hosiery when we wear our dress-up frocks.
Similarly, a lace up Hazel Leather Pump has a casual, yet urban friendly snazzy style to it.
Equestrian embellishments like braided details, and harnesses (a studded Heath and the Melissa collection)--- are classics.
And in the vintage vein are boho sandals and the platform Corinna Campus Wedge--- that still finds favor with those of us who wore that style decades ago with our oversized elephant leg blue jeans.
On Our Wish List:
What we’re calling the TATOO boot collection blew us away and brought out our inner grrrrl!
In development for eight years (!!!), the laser stitched, white washed finish “plays up the tattoo,” Petry told us. A great combo of “soft” (leather) and the “aggressive” (hip designs by noted-tough to make an appointment with---- tattoo artist MASTER Scott Campbell) ---“it took awhile to figure out the leather.”
We only previewed the women’s styles…because the men’s versions were “stuck in customs.”
We also think Frye will have great success with the over the knee boots…a big trend for Fall 2009 and Spring 2010.
Sculptural:
The cut out heels---for gals “living in Brooklyn.” Cool.
Men’s:
Workmen style lace up field boots in full grain leather, tumbled/smooth full grain,
and a Greene Tall Lace in washed canvas/tumbled full grain leather...
... flexible crepe outsoles and and Chukka styles are perennial best sellers.
Oxfords, Frye’s ways ---are handsome, masculine alternatives for professional dudes.
And what makes the men’s selections so special are the obvious to the eye, hand-finished details and eye catching exposed window soles.
We were very impressed with the flexibility/softness of the boat shoes and slip-ons with bold contrast stitching..
And lifestyle sneakers (remind us of old school tennis shoes) are also “doing great.”
Accessories:
Truth be told, we wanted it all.
In the Campus Group…a Crossbody knapsack style, Hobo and Stud Tote in soft crunch leather are the perfect everyday bags.
The carryalls for men are roomy enough for weekend jaunts and structured enough for office warriors.
Prices:
For Spring 2010, most kickers will hit retail outlets in November 2009-January 2010, with gals’ MSRPs from $138 topping out at $398 for boots. Women’s bags range from $298-$498 (real values considering the quality)…
Guys will shell out from $128-$288 for those fierce Billy Tatoo boots.
Backstory:
Founded in 1863 by Massachusetts resident, the English native shoemaker John A. Frye. The oldest continuously operating shoe company in America (YEAH) has shod adventuresome pioneers, cowboys, American servicemen…and cool Hollywood types for decades.
Now:
Owned outright (since 1998) by Jimlar Corporation, helmed by brothers Jim and Larry Tarica, with a design studio and a STUNNING NYC showroom smack dab on Fifth Avenue. We wanted to move in.
We Support:
Frye’s partnership with Project A.L.S. in “A STEP TOWARDS A CURE”…via 20% donation of proceeds from the limited edition Jenifer Estess Collection” of boots.
Conclusion:
Every style we saw…are keepers! Love the embossed logo.

PURA LÓPEZ: HIGH END SHOES FROM SPAIN
DISCOVERED BY THE AMERICAS!
FFANY-Hilton Hotel, NYC
June 11th, 2009
Words, Images Judith Ecochard
Elegant sexy peds for contemporary women (on both sides of the Pond)--- were highlights of the footwear served up by the Spanish brand Pura LĂłpez.
We knew of the strong reputation for quality and craftsmanship that this shoe brand has earned in Europe…that’s 100% made in Spain.
So it was nice to meet Inma Tejedor, the US Retail distributor …and her American husband Carl Kuhlman.
TOP PICKS:
Living in a walking city we really liked the thick rubber “tractor” soles on the bold, side buckle fushia suede bootie... and a ‘blue is the new black’ leather pair with a comfy pitch.
We also were drawn to the dramatic stiletto heels and fringe details of other to the knee kickers too.
Kulman clued us in that for Fall 2009, the menswear influence keeps the lower heel and oxford platform selections in demand also.
Pumps (kitten heels, stilettos) in luxe Italian leather and satin are also major sellers.
And the peep toe front tassels on strappy high heel sandals-
in suede and leather options- are perfect three to four season fashion forward shoes…that we think will sell very well.
The evening shoe collection is stunning, with a green silk platform high heel open toe style and a plush brown velvet pair our favorites.
BACKSTORY: Founded in 1956 by Antonio LĂłpez Moreno…now helmed by designer (and daughter) Pura LĂłpez in the family tradition of the highest craftsmanship. A favorite of European royals, designers, and celebs like Penelope Cruz who wore the shoes (40’s styles) in the film Manolete.

MAGRIT: CHIC EUROPEAN SHOE COLLECTION ...
WINS RETAIL BUYERS FROM AROUND THE GLOBE
SPRING 2010-FFANY
Hilton Hotel, Sixth Avenue/54th Street
June 10th, 2009
Words, Images Judith Ecochard
It’s an exceedingly rare occurrence in our lives…a serious case of musthave-itis...
…but about five years ago, YSL- under the maestroTom Ford- conjured up a glorious Lucite heel strappy sandal number, with an oversized red velvet flower adorning the upper. The clear, sky-high heels were embedded with sparkling gold confetti pieces, an engineering feat for the feet.
The cocktail kickers sold out at the Big Apple store… in a New York minute, naturally. We lived in Washington DC at the time…so securing a pair, was not a problem.
Fashion, not exactly a talking point in our nation’s capital at that time... was a plus for us. This was the metropolis where we scooped up the H&M Victor & Rolf collection at a leisurely pace- with like two other guys (who scored all the wedding gowns, HELLO?!)…while those other H&M outlets barely controlled the buyers’ frenzies that cleared those shelves in the first fifteen minutes!
And we thought about all this when we walked into the Hilton Hotel Suite where the upscale shoe collection by MAGRIT- had a posh assortment of sandals, evening wear, pumps, sling backs and sexy stilettos on display.
For as it turns out, this Spanish based family owned company- has been making shoes for several elegant brands including our precious sandals (YSL) and other high end labels such as Carolina Herrera.
SIGNATURE CLAIM TO FAME:
Creativity and colors with pizzazz were in the assortment we previewed…with daring combinations of materials (suede, leather, lucite, silk rope, wood) in any give pair... and embellishments like no other.
We actually felt like Cinderella’s stepsister as we tried to slide on a sample size 7 on our mottled feet.
Though there was quite the bodily overhang, we could tell that these particular sandals were supportive--- with a cushioning midsole and breathable linings. Espadrilles, so popular for summer, sport easy to walk in wedges… and are definitely on our coveted list.
“Comfort is the most important element,” Pepe Sr. told us.
These graceful peds, so wonderfully adoptive for day to night wear, are a terrific value too...
(priced in “Contemporary” and “Affordable Designer,” ranges)… given the quality of construction, materials (Swarovski crystals, hand painted raffia, buttery Italian leathers), and luscious designs.
BEST SELLERS: Crystal bow satin and oversized flower peep toe party shoes.
PLUS: A select group of bejeweled handbags and clutches are also available.
BACKSTORY: Seventy-five years old, the family run business is currently run by the third and fourth generations of the Mira family (Pepe and Pepe Jr Amat). Based in the Alicante region of Spain, the shoes are 100% crafted by highly skilled Spaniards, in-house, not farmed out to regions far flung.

OFF THE BEATEN TRACK: NEW FALL 2009/SPRING 2010
VINELAND
COMFY COLLECTION WITH A HIP ‘TUDE
FFANY TRADESHOW: Hilton Hotel NYC
June 10th, 2009
Words, Images Judith Ecochard
FFANY is a massive shoe bi-annual tradeshow…that’s all business to participants…but induces major envy amongst our gal pals not in the trade.
Because, in a way, we are surrounded by the one thing women everywhere can agree on: the love of shoes.
VICTORVILLE
Off The Beaten Track is a stylish and ergonomically friendly line of kickers that we got to know at Outdoor Retailer in SLC, this past January.
Updated 2009 and new Spring 2010 looks that we saw yesterday included fresh colors for several popular styles.
INCLUDING:
The rounded toe wish flower embossed CORONA (Spring 2010)…with color contrasts (Chianti Navy)…and another color option for the JOHNSTON (velvet brown Fall 2009) that have been big sellers for the brand…and our favs too.
Fabric lace up ASHLAND boots, oozing worker/Doc Martens ethos…have a grrrllll vibe while the Mary Jane leather VICTORVILLEs' (available now) are positively girly.
A selection for Spring 2009 and 2010 toss up winners that we’d be happy to wear…all day in fact because the shoes are that comfortable!!!!!
I.E. the cork, flower splashed heel of a pair of wedge sandals (LAGRANGE-Spring 2009),
A boot (cool) MERCED (Fall 2009)
Buttery leather gladiator style flat sandals.(NATICK Spring 2009 & NAPA Spring 2010)
Thick cross strap leather sandals with the cool logo stamp on the heel (RICHMOND).
And the perfect lace up leather flip flops ever ((LIBIA Spring 2009))…in six shades--- including summery new orange and canary yellow.
There’s also a suede slip-on (NEEDLES Spring 2010) that seems to be a wardrobe staple these days.
Given the prices points (from about $79 up to $189 for boots)… the quality of materials (real leather, organic canvas), high grade rubber soles, breathable, moisture wicking anti-bacterial footbeds, and construction… add up to a value peds for work, travel and leisurely pursuits.

DOUGLAS HANNANT: RESORT 2010
THE RIGHT WOMEN HAVE SOMETHING TO WANT
Wednesday, June 9th
Garment District, NYC
Words, Images Judith Ecochard
Douglas Hannant knows his customer. Much like the legendary fashion icon Bill Blass, this veteran delivers again, and again the updated chic classics---elegant separates, gowns and dresses that his clientele will ooh and ah…
…And happily buy without the consumer guilt that seems to get written about all the time. (Enough).
For this luxurious collection, Hannant was inspired by a rich “gypsy” style.
The nano second we walked in… the saturated colors of the clothes, simply hung on hangers--- conjured up the deep blue Mediterranean, the turquoise tranquility of the Caribbean waters, the lush greens of the tropics, and fragile corals. Simply transporting…but yes…this is RESORT.
Exotic embellishments of sparkling beads and jewels adorned hems, necklines and entire bodices…sexy bold but never vulgar. Hannant doesn’t do vulgar.
And we were reminded of one of our favorite designers- the under rated Christian Lacroix.
The winner for us? The Red Carpet black/white print bustle like gown with a black silk kick pleat in geometric cutouts and lace-y attachments. WOW! The contrast of the delicate and solid textures was astonishing. No wonder all the men present wanted to pose with the model that graciously strolled the atelier, ready for her Oscar. (Image above)
The signature sloping waist defined several outfits--- all gloriously reinterpreted in different fabrics…sensuous silks, refined linens, and beautiful satins…in sleeveless and cap sleeves frocks.
We wanted it all.
Major kudos for the ‘second’ line Insignia
(priced in the affordable designer range $300-$1000) too. The silhouettes are sophisticated-caftans, sheaths, etc…but tailored out of fabrics that allow for lower price points.

PORTS 1961 PRE-SPRING 2010
PORTS 1961- Gansevoort Street/9th Avenue, NYC
June 8th 2009- 6PM
Words, Images Judith Ecochard
We have a Midas touch pal-a former flat broke, college dropout…who whisked a gaggle of us off to sail the stunning Mediterranean Sea on his latest toy, a Bentti.
IMHO: that hard work did pay off for our generous friend.
The attire---alternating between casual daywear, and more formal dinner frocks, had us alternating between feeling comfy and then NOT SO.
We thought about that idyllic sojourn as we took in the refined Pre-Spring collection of Ports 1961, designed by one of our favorite designers in the biz, Tia Cibani. Because…
This smart woman- the Creative Director of the label- must labor 24/7 to produce the namesake line several times a year, in addition to her children’s collection KICO KIDS… plus oversee an upscale accessories assortment too.
Hard Work!
And because Cibani’s luxe fabrics, clean silhouettes, deft handling of textures and embellishments, and cultural references- not only serve up chic garments fused with interpretations of far-flung locales, season after season…but also are effortlessly wearable.
To reference that jet-set lifestyle in a collection is not a new concept, plenty of designers sing that tune.
But to do it with the styles that look good on all body types, as well as craft ensembles that we don’t feel like tearing off as soon as we get home, is another matter all together.
“The clothes have to be comfortable,” Cibani told us. Now that’s true luxury.
THE STORE:
Our visit to the light fill Ports 1961 boutique in the Meatpacking District, began with a tour -led by the charming and knowledgeable salesman, Kyle.
Smart Hire:
The acclaimed architect Michael Gabellini, successfully fused industrial touches (Lucite shelves, steel) with intimate warm neutral tone flourishes- to shape this spacious three story former art gallery, into an inviting store.
We love the weather box, a roofless 10x10 foot square contained by striking 12 ft glass panels…that bring whatever Mother Nature delivers smack dab into the middle of the store.
One dressing room, shielded by gauzy shimmery silk fabric, contains a silver dollar investment piece chair that’s really worth sitting in.
Naturally we asked what was “hot” from the Spring 2009 collection.
“I have four dresses that I can sell again and again,” Kyle told us…including an one shoulder floaty dress in mauve, a yellow tiered modern coat with raw edges, and satiny silver shifts with sculptural necklines.
THE “TEA ROOM” COLLECTION
Up a flight of stairs- a separate atelier with an envy-inducing terrace…contained the Pre-Spring attire on racks, mannequins, and brought to life on a willowy model with a striking, 20’s flapper haircut.
Cibani was inspired by “the artistic and romantic collaboration of architect, designer and water colorist Charles Mackintosh and artist, Margaret Macdonald- a duo that conjured up memorable interior design, craftwork, and textiles that were “elegant and original”…and of “fragile beauty.”
Elements of “art nouveau to art deco,” with touches of Asian and Modernist elements were apparent in one of our favorite looks (and Cibani’s too)…a plush brown velvet cover-up with a wonderful grid pattern- paired with a gently draped layered mesh/silk gown. Timeless.
Another winner-a deep scooped neck, long gown with perfectly tucked gatherings (available in plum and gray).
And a wonderful vintage crotchet silver/gold metallic scarf cleverly attached to a tea length dress harked back to the twenties while still being 21st century. No jewelry required.
Peg leg pants (to wear with flats or strappy sandals) in neutral pearl and oynx shades were paired with breezy silk tops… or with a short swingy cap, a distinct and fun silhouette. We loved how the white blouse underneath had bracelet length sleeves, adorned with three buttons.
Several sleeveless black dresses also had us in the mood for posh surroundings…
And while many reads now have the ‘style for less’ columns…trust us when we say that one does not get the tailored polish, sophisticated draping and ruching, body fitting inner construction, silk linings, nor expensive fabrics that feel magnificent…with the super knock off price tags.
FINAL THOUGHTS:
Pre-Spring ships in mid-October (wow) but these clothes can be worn year round. Easily.

RUBIN CHAPELLE: GLAM RTW FOR WOMEN WHO WEAR THE CLOTHES-NOT VICE VERSA

RUBIN CHAPELLE : 410 WEST 14th Street, NYC
June 5th, 3PM
Words, Images Judith Ecochard
Images Courtesy of Rubin Chapelle
A quick visit during the recent Meatpacking District’s Design Week events- had us wanting to revisit the architecturally striking Rubin Chapelle store at a more quiet time.
And with our eyeballs on the luxe attire and accessories, designed by the FIT grads’ duo KIP CHAPELLE (American) and SONIA RUBIN (Austrian).
Lucky us, we got an “escorted” tour of this airy, loft like space (designed by Annabelle Selldorf- of Neue Gallery fame). The whimsical Gregory Coates sculptures, poured concrete floors, and exposed brick walls lent an element of drama to our spatial experience. The store, in situe since 2002 was a pioneer in this former "wprking" slice of the Big Apple…with the legendary opening night party still conjuring up fond memories.
WHAT:
Rubin Chapelle, began with their “anchor collection of RTW in 1997…and since 2002, have moved towards evening and event wear,” according to Frank Damone Milliren, our ‘tour’ guide and Creative Director.
Produced in America (YEAH) out of the finest leather/knits (Italy), and European silks…and superior denim (Los Angeles) for the separate men’s and women’s jeans line 192 DOVES™ (launched in A/W 2006)---the Rubin Chapelle aesthetic is one of the “highest craftsmanship, true pure classic silhouettes,” effortless draping, and details without the fuss and frills.
Milliren compared Rubin Chapelle’s oeuvre to the career of artist Paul Klee---we were thinking the visual transition of an Impressionist painting down to the essential essence of a Mondrian.
Same point…
THE COLLECTION:
A series of signature tops and flowing dresses made from premium silks “that verge on crepe”--- are reworked with slight detail changes each collection. All feature elegant drapes/ruching in neutral tones that are season-less and versatile.
Meaning we can see wearing a sleeveless, fluttery top as our uniform for all occasions--- with one of their hip leather belts, strappy sandals and a pair of those fab dark denim jeans…
…while professional gals could wear one under a tailored suit for work and then keep the top on, switch into a long evening skirt, throw on some bling--- and violĂ … a black tie outfit.
Dresses too, including the stylish “Tucked Pleat” that was on a mannequin, are equally as dress up/dress down multi-tasking.
The polished differences with Rubin Chapelle attire, are the refined finishes-like expertly sewn pearl edged seams, for example. The judges would approve.
Other looks we coveted include a sensuous gauzy raw silk number, laboriously (2 weeks!) hand painted and available made to order too…
And a classic sheath that the First Lady probably already has in her wardrobe.
We loved how the basic, flattering shift came in a wool gabardine, waffle silk wool, linen and for summer, a stretch khaki…all with subtle detail nuances…like piping or a tuxedo tail.
Our favorite color, a celadon green with tranquil gray blue overtones…is a prominent tone this season. And a shade that can work on anyone.
The eveningwear--- including a gaggle of Carolyn Bessette (Kennedy) worthy Bridal gowns ($2600-$5800)…are for customers that appreciate the way a fabulous frock can enhance the body…comfortably. These are must try on attire to fully appreciate ‘it all’--- we think…these are clothes that beg to be touched, feel great on--- but do not SCREAM.
Given the customizable options, i.e. modesty panels/camisoles/lace inserts inside a striking CHARLESTON gown, or adjustable raised eyehooks etc, we felt that the gowns would work are most female forms too…not just the tall and skinny.
ACCESSORIES:
Channeling that “English Manor feeling” with the initial unisex PRESTON urban bag…a full on accessories collection debuts this Spring.
Rubin Chapelle’s clean aesthetic manifesto gets a glorious translation here- in the iconic shapes, the equestrian style hand dyed leather straps, and the structure of the polished Italian leather or brick woven, Egyptian raw cotton samples that we saw.
Nice Touch: The microfiber linings, the proprietary brass hardware, the convertible collapsible opening---for the satchel into tote haulers---including our top pick, the ESTATE (with a without a leather halter).
These keepers, priced from around $1200-$2400 (leather)…$650-$1250 (canvas)---are not fad items. They are meant to carry one’s life around, forever.
AND LOVE: THE BAGS ARE MADE IN NYC!!!!!!!
BOOTS & BELTS:
Handmade and fitted, the boots we saw had a Edwardian feel to them…if Robin Hood didn’t mind looking rich while stealing from them. A creamy fringed lace up pair with coin closures and a comfy ½ inch wedge--- custom made for some Left Coast chicette, is a worthy substitute for the Uggs of yore. (Prices start around $2600)
Belts are also hand worked of plush leather/suede--- with just that right amount of grommets hardware to distinguish them ($220-$280).
192 DOVES™
Rubin Chapelle wisely “… redirected what they’ve done for fashion… into denim…with a clean simple aesthetic collection,” Millitren clued us in.
“It’s all about the fit…with 2% stretch,” he added “but engineered back pockets that hit –for a flattering look.” We wanted to walk out with a pair on… we loved the raw denim black, the cool canvas waistband-curved for gals, triple stitching, hand lined pockets, and the overall design that wasn’t over the top. So streamlined smart we thought.
Figures, celebs ranging from the statuesque Uma Thurman to Oprah-to actor Jude Law wear them.
And the name: 192 countries- on the planet at inception... and “doves for peace.”

PRIMALOFT®: PERFORMANCE INSULATION
NEW CONVEXION RECHNOLOGY™=ULTRA THERMAL EFFICIENCY, MAXIMUM LOFT
Morgans Hotel Penthouse, Madison Avenue, NYC
June 3rd, 2009
Words, Images Judith Ecochard
As outdoorsy types-- we know what it’s like to FREEZE in our wet snowboard or hiking boots. Not fun…and potentially dangerous.
Our ancient footgear is not made with the water resistant, moisture wicking, warm and compression recoverable PrimaLoft®Eco Footwear microfibers (a 50/50 blend of virgin/recycled insulation).
Now we know to insist on the black/red/white/gray Primaloft® hangtag on all future winter kickers.
WHAT’S NEW
We recently took in a mind boggling showcase of performance clothing, footwear, outdoor gear, accessories, and housewares’ that use PrimaLoft® materials as part of their DNA.
It was an eye opener…taking in all the top brands like Black Diamond, Marmot, Burton, Avalanche, Salomon, Spyder,Montrail, Technica, Cloudveil, Patagonia, Sierra Designs, REI, Arc'Teryx, Kombi, etc--- staged by functional vignettes (Traveling, By the Fireside, Hunting, Winter Camping, Extreme Winter Sports, Winter Snow Sports, and Hospitality)… all using this cutting edge, thermally efficient fiber.
No surprise…Primaloft® got a major bump up when it was developed for use by the US ARMY as a superior performing, washable synthetic alternative to down. Now all branches of the military including the elite Special Forces…are attired in gear embedded with PrimaLoft®.
Top on our female wish list was the stylish Powder Room belted plaid snowboard jacket ($170) for gals…made by Canada’s Ripzone…(it’s menswear company).
Since we spend way to much time wiping out why surfing the mountains, we were very impressed that the seam sealed, ez care cover-up was 100% waterproof, and had the details we demand from active wear like insulated thumbholes, two needle stitching, an inner powder skirt to prevent the white stuff from climbing up our backs, and zipped pockets to stash our stuff.
We also liked the Colorado born Loki jacket with a built in full face protection (and gloves!)…and the travel pouch that shakes out into a warm insulated vest (Loki Phase Change Vest), courtesy of the super lightweight, ultra fine fibered Primaloft® Sport …a new thermally efficient, water resistant, breathable and compressible material that maximizes loft.
Other advanced gear we can’t wait to demo:
the Recco® avalanche reflector embedded Animagi waterproof jacket by North Face,
city chic equestrian waterproof peds (Ariat Grasmere riding boot with PrimaLoft® Eco)
and super soft, moisture wicking, and warm Mountain Hardwear Pumeri cardigan (with PrimaLoft® Yarn)…
and Merrell lace up suede kickers…though our guys will like the trekkers.
Performance wear companies (new to us) are the Kjus collection…from Switzerland
and sponsor of Bode Miller,
the streetwear worthy “on slope and on pavement” clean lines of Isaora (from NYC)….
and Powderhorn women’s line outta Jackson Hole.
Frankly, we wanted everything. Including the bedding. The highlight was the pillow menu-puffed up with Primaloft®--- offered by leading hotel W Hotels…that let’s guests dial up or down the softness in hypoallergenic comfort.

THE GALLERY LA & KPR PRESENT:
LOGAN RIESE, BABAKUL, DIRTY DOG JEANS, SEA BAGS, KARANI, HARI
Agent Red Showroom, West 39th Street
June 2nd, 2009
2PM

The Gallery LA is a showroom/ pr/marketing machine with an eco bent. We always look forward to any project the team, led by Mikey Koffman…gets going.
Yesterday, we stopped by the spacious Garment Center located- Agent Red showroom for the Fall/Holiday collections of several clothing and accessory companies---as presented by this innovative left coast firm. One we knew (Sea Bags)…and the rest … we got to know.
Tops on our list was LOGAN RIESE an impossibly hip luxe leather line of original jackets and satchels…and BABAKUL…a fairly new collection of women’s contemporary wear with leather pieces made in conjunction with Logan (an old pal from TRUE RELIGION denim days).
LOGAN RIESE’s leather motorcycle jackets, blazers and carryalls are def original, incredibly well (and lovingly) crafted in his Santa Monica workshop out of top grain Italian leathers and exotic skins.
The outerwear and bags we saw are so cool…it didn’t surprise us that Riese has done custom work for celebs and rockers like Lenny Kravitz, Jon Bon Jovi, Shaq…and films like The Terminator.
Bet the cast kept that wardrobe!
We learned that LOGAN RIESE is set to open a new store on Robertson Blvd/Melrose next to John Vavartos LA store.
BabaKul (French for hippie) is in its second season…and true to LA fashion…it’s a beach to California formal perfect. Already plenty of Hollywood hipsters are wearing the line’s famous “Audrey” vest and 9oz denim jeans. No wonder: the collection was founded by fashion vet Kym Gold ---(a co-founder of True Religion)…and is partnered with pal Sophie Wizmann herself a seasoned denim guru (Antik, Taverniti).
What sets BabaKul apart is the trouser like polish …and the fit. Styles for Fall, available in black, grey or indigo denim, with/without a stripe -and corduroy …include “Sweet Pea” a Boyfriend Trouser, “Corey” a Skinny Zipped Hem five Pocket Trouser (our fav), “Michelle” a Wide Waist Trouser, and “Ruby” a Straight Leg Trouser.
We also liked the single button knotch collar Sophie Blazer…in plaid.

DIRTY DOG JEANS is a new denim line by the gracious Dolores Gill. “I appreciate the male form,” she told us. “I wanted to make denim that will make them look good, fit their butts in different ways--- but is flattering.”
Styles for guys that we can see guys actually wearing (and the details!!!) include “The Retriever” that zip off into shorts, and the fitted “Shaggy Dog” with zippers on the side.
There are also super comfy thermal cotton long sleeve tees, and a reworked bunch of ‘used’ tees…ECO!
For gals, there’s a classic/cool vintage like “Rock & Roll Collie” jean and a terrif denim jacket with double collar, and zip hardware details,
“It’s a little but sexy and a little bit playful, “ Gill noted.
There’s fun jewelry pieces made from recycled newspapers and resin too.
FACTOIDS WE LOVE:
Dirty Dog Jeans™ are Made In America and the jeans are made from 100% all cotton, beaten down denim.

Handmade in Portland Maine out of “retired” sailing cloth, SEA BAGS is gaining traction beyond the nautical set. We love their oversized pillows and one off attire.
WE APPLAUD THE MISSION: “Send sails to us and we’ll pay for shipping. Or call us for a pick up (especially if you’re on Tortola or Bora Bora,”
sails@seabags.com
One entrepreneur we enjoyed chatting with is the talented LA native Ani Karapetian.
Her modern gal's line KarAni has a European edge to it as well as a "futuristic "sculptural elements.
Top pick: a black skirt with intricate folds and construction. ..and a sexy pair of sleek pants with striking gold zippers up the middle of the back of the legs…for the ultimate exit.
INFO: KAR ANI
HARI is helmed by Lainey Sheridan-Young outta London.
Though barely two years old, celebs like Madonna and Mischa Barton wear the line…which has some of the coolest slouchy slick but flattering track suits ever.
What’s also popular is the Union Jack tee shirt, with Americans no less…and the nylon hoodies. Currently available at Browns, and online.

THE MAKEUP SHOW 2009: ECO FRIENDLY PICKS
PARIAN SPIRIT®, KOH GEN DO, NAKED COSMETICS, STILA, NU SKIN GALVANIC SPA SYSTEM II
The Metropolitan Pavilion, West 18th Chelsea NYC
Words, Images Judith Ecochard
Also Images courtesy of respective companies.
There was a significant push to go “Green” by many cosmetics companies at the 4th annual The Makeup Trade Show.
IE.
We like the mindset of Levon Parian…the founder of Parian Spirit., a non-toxic product for makeup brush cleaning.
That REALLY works- dissolving adhesives and serious glunk used by special effects types--- without acetone or dry cleaning fluids. (YIKES).
A former biochemist/photographer, Parian and his wife-a makeup toiler at Universal Movie Studios… conjured up several cleaning, disinfecting and conditioning liquid solutions for the tools of the trade that get splattered with makeup----including clothes, wigs, false eyelashes, false facial hair, and brushes.
Parian demoed the aptly named Parian Spirit for us---housed in a portable cannister that traps the makeup and debris beneath an easily cleaned rubber screen. The product terminated powder from an oversized bristled brush- as billed…in seconds. Plus, the brush blotted dry (on paper towel) very quickly too.
“We have a shelf life of six months to a year,” Pairan noted…”and when you shake the product, it turns cloudy when it is past its peak performance.”
And we thought…good thing humans don’t work this way.
PARIAN SPIRIT
Another newbie for us is the KOH GEN DO botanically based skincare and makeup collection. Apparently, this 23 years old Japanese line has always been paraben free.
We liked how the Aqua Foundations, made from the deep sea waters of Rausu Japan, “combined (with) the limited harvest of White Birch Sap”…looked great on our skin. Apparently, there’s a light diffusion factor that’s magical…minimizing the stuff we want to minimize (pores, blotches etc)..
Added plus: Skin perfection without artificial colors, fragrance or petroleum based mineral oil.
KOH GEN COSMETICS
NAKED COSMETICS-out of Tampa, Florida… had every color on the planet spread out for testing. Smartly, the 100% micronized mica (“that’s why we call it NAKED,”) can get mixed with clear nail polish, clear lip gloss or a creamy white eye base (waterproof!)… or just dabbed on with a bit of water for eyeliner…for that ideal shade.
Big plus…non-perishable, hypoallergenic and did we mention THE COLORS. Still popular, the shimmery samples with hints of glitter..
Stila is one of the first companies to embrace eco-friendly, recycled packaging. For the INDIAN SUMMER 24k Gold Collection…the too cool for school award goes to the Golden Noir Smudgepot $20 (a saturated black/gold shade)...that works as an eyeliner or eyeshadow. It sold out at the show.

We know very little about the marketing of NU SKIN® products…but we certainly got schooled on the company’s new Galvanic Spa System II, an at home, hand held device that delivers low level, self adjusting galvanic currents to the face, body or scalp---in order to “deliver key ingredients to the skin for a revived and rejuvenated appearance.”
The concept of employing positive /negative charges via electrical currents--- in tandem with “active ingredients” lotions/gels for a natural “lift’ is not a new. Europeans have been getting these kinds of treatments for years…and so have Hollywood celebs that swear by them (not the Botox, ahem)..
We found that the demo we eagerly volunteered to get---that included pre-treatment and treatment facial gels…certainly left our face skin feeling terrific, honestly. Though we couldn’t see any lift effect. Apparently, one has to use the device at least 2x a week to see results to see major results.
Nu Skin’s system has four interchangeable treatment heads that target different areas…including an ergonomic “Tru Face Line Corrector” for wrinkles under the delicate eye area.
The eco angle...saving all that gasoline on spa trips.
NU SKIN USA or 800 487 1000.

CHARITY: WATER, NAVITAS NATURALS, SHAMAN CHOCOLATES

Words, Judith Ecochard
Images from the company websites
It’s all about education.
Our gal pal’s teenager was sportin’ fake Dolce & Gabanna sunglasses snagged on a jaunt to NYC’s Canal Street… for “$3.”
Well, we asked, whom do you think made those sunglasses…so that it’s cheap enough to illegally sell here , let alone who might actually profit from the sale of bootlegs.
Something most people on a mission to look ‘important” via mass market labels fake or otherwise- probably never think about.
That got our brain cells charged up about all we consume and indulge in…for us it’s our sweet tooth. And how easy it is to buy 'stuff' for everyday--- from companies that give back. At the right price too.
Clearly the most successful (YEAH) of the give back, make a different organizations on the planet is charity: Water a registered 501(3) C where 100% of all monies raised goes to developing fresh water sources--- around the globe.
Merchandise wise we think the BPA free Thermos® Hydration Bottle ($40) -with a pop up straw for easy gulps---is a great gift for Father’s Day.![]()

Another innovative company we admire is Navitas Naturals. Since 2003, the company’s mission has been to provide premium organic power foods that are tasty and good for you.
“Our products come from the wisdom of ancient cultures and their traditional use of plants for both culinary and medicinal purposes,” says Zach Adelman, President of Navitas Naturals.
PLUS: through direct purchasing agreements, Navitas Naturals provides and expands fair trade economic opportunities in developing regions around the world.
One product that’s gotten a lot of buzz is the Organic Green Stevia sweetner (packaged in an 8 ounce reusable pouch $11.99). The flavor of our AM java gets a palatable push with a dab of this “Honey Leaf”--- a white flowered herb indigenous to Paraguay--- that’s been used by the Guarani and Mato Grosso Indians in it’s premium raw forms- for like ever.
And little goes a long way as Stevia is 30x sweeter than sugar cause of glycosides. BONUS: Stevia sweetens without the crash and burn effect on insulin levels, it’s calorie free and purportedly it aids digestion too. Def better than refined sugar and the synthetics we used to use.
Widely available…check out the Navitas Natural Website for more info.
We’ve written about SHAMAN CHOCOLATES before…
The 2oz bars we score at our local health foods store are ALWAYS quickly devoured as the authentic quality of the USDA Certified Organic and Fair Trade Certified treats are right up there with the pricey goodies …
But better…as all profits from Shaman Chocolates support the pre-columbian living Huichol Indians, a small (15,000) tribe of native Indians lresiding in the Sierra Madres of Mexico.
Our new favorites are the Organic Dark Chocolate with Acai, Lemon & Orange, and the one with the Green Tea and Ginger. Yum.
