SEW by Scott Wasserberger and the debut of La Mode Revient

Lower East Side-and Midtown-NYC

Words, Images Judith Ecochard and courtesy of designer.

We were thinking about the McDonald-ization of the luxury goods-how impersonal the entire manufacturing and shopping experiences have all gotten.

Psychology often factors into consumer purchases and we think the need to conjure up unique designs with the focus on the customer-not the ‘it’ item---heralds a welcome shift back to personal attention and craftsmanship.
Recently, we stopped in the wood paneled store/atelier of SEW – that serves up bespoke and RTW (“Off the Peg”) collections of finely tailored menswear with a hip twist.

Garment industry veteran, Scott Evan Wasserberger pays homage to his family with this fairly new establishment…and the tradition of a Saville Row like experience, stateside.

With a glass of wine in hand, we got an exclusive up close tour of the goodies last week---and once again feel ‘the clothes make the man’ especially when the attire has subtle flourishes---“cool” linings, unique buttons (mother of pearl etc), and contrast stitching on lapels, hand applied of course.

Long sleeve dress shirts made from the finest cottons sourced from international mills (mostly Italian, duh)---come in an array of styles-as befits the build and preferences of the client.

What dudes get are flawless fits (tapered is in)- and the ideal color/print options given a guy’s other wardrobe holdings- and skin tone. Custom finishes like higher upper buttons for a polished tie-less look “without looking like a guido”…and wider cuffs to accommodate oversized watches are standard.

“I design with what it (blazer, shirt, waist coat) will look like with a pair of denim.” Wasserberger noted…highlighting the high/low trend of wearing jeans with everything and everywhere.

And why not, it’s more comfy. And a custom jacket has all the bells and whistles ---like extra inner pockets for cigars and shoulders with some oomph that can enhance a triangle silhouette- if need be

Top spring looks include partially lined jackets and seersucker.

And a silk velvet blazer in silvery gray would look handsome and appropriate on a young Hollywood hunk.
Formal garb and outwear are available too---in classic cuts or with edgy twists. Or both.

All work is done locally in the tri-state area with experienced craftsmen laboriously hand stitching and finishing everything… as a flawless end product is a given.

This is as fine tailoring experience as any man can get…and as discreet as necessary.

Another alternative to the assembly line retail experience is launching this week via La Mode Revient---an intimate, upscale POP SHOP like experience meshed with the personal attention of designers hosting the event.

For its debut in NYC on May 1st-- at high-end shoe maker Vanessa Noel’s salon, La Mode Revient hosts Sonya Rolin (Sonya Rolin Atelier) and Irene Zelinsky (Rolling Stonz designs-a jewelry line) – will both be showing their chic, classic modern designs- and styling/customizing clients from head-to-toe if desired.
Fashion designer Ruben Singer …is also a guest host.

Privacy and discretion in the “couture” like setting is a given. Plus ---the option of sipping relaxing cocktails …make for a unique experience that women of this generation probably- totally- missed out on.

TBD: Future cities with other designers.

MALIBU JEANS: DENIM TO LIVE IN

Words, Images Judith Ecochard

Garment Center: April 23, 2009

Some retailers might role their eyes at the mention of another denim line…but our peepers were certainly lockin' on a new bunch of jeans out of (where else) California...that we previewed last week, MALIBU DENIM.

Super soft (made with cashmere in the mix- sourced from exclusive Italian mills) ---the cuts include the classic boot, slouchy, and the skinny-all with the perfect fit and finish---including the distressed look that embraces the beachy elements of sea salt and sun.

How did Malibu Denim get it right out of the gate?

Founder Diane Sedigi is a vet of all things denim (in Europe) including the manufacturing process in her DNA. With loads of experience across the Pond, Sedigi settled in Malibu and was inspired to launch a premium line: with her “signature, and most obvious detail; her modern and unique approach to the back yoke” ---for a sexy and uplifted silhouette.

Malibu Denim will be available at select retailers nationwide including Intermix, Fred Segal, National Jeans and Planet Blue. Retail prices range from $160 - $200.

LUX CARTEL: DOWNTOWN SHOWROOM WITH INTERNATIONAL APPEAL

Back To Noise

SANDRINA FASOLI, BACK TO NOISE, IVONNE COHEN

FALL/WINTER 2009

White Street, Tribeca NYC

April 21st 2009

Words, Images Judith Ecochard and courtesy of Lux Cartel

We admire women entrepreneurs who have a vision and can execute.

And in this economy, we particularly hand it to the creative types who stick to their editorial guns---like Deborah Hanau and Jenna Sloan- owners of Lux Cartel and Dei Lewison, the super nice PR Director.

A fairly new showroom, Lux Cartel represents- and launches in the USA- a bunch of international designers –all of whom have something extra.

The lines might be called luxury---as the prices are in that “affordable designer" range.

And the standouts for us were items that we term twists on the classics or off the charts hot

Our favorite is SANDRINA FASOLI a Belguim trained/based designer (and first winner, with partner Michael Marson- of the prestigious El-Botón-MANGO FASHION AWARD---- with a jury headed by uber designer Valentino-). The duo sew up fresh twists on the modern- 1920’s polished classics.

For Fall 2009, our top separate is a comfy gazillion ply black cashmere/wool black jacket with Poiret-esque elegant folds and a wide lapel coat with elegant finishes that reminded us of Albert Elbaz designs for Guy Larouche…back in the day.

A menswear swagger (think Marlene Dietrich) high waist gray wool trousers and chic silk blouses and wool skirts with scalloped hems round out a wearable neutral tone collection.

BACK TO NOISE is a “post punk” label that is inspired by the eighties for Fall 2009. The sexy mostly red/ black collections are editorial darlings…and are punched up with spidery crotchet epaulet embellishments for that hipster cred elongated padded shoulder that’s been resurrected.

We think retail buyers might like BTN’s take on a slick suit…with a cool red side stripe inching the sides of mini skirt with a zoot suit like wide lapel shiny jacket. The oversized blazer (boyfriend) paired with skin tight leggings and a nicely done trench---are key trends for Fall too.

PLUS: Exotic croc and leather accessories and satchels with just the right amount of bling---(pictured at top)

IVONNE COHEN hails from Mexico City---which explains the vivacious rainbow colors of the intricate (hand done) ornate beading (with semi-precious stones)- applied too Victorian silk blouses, denim jackets and gathered mini skirts.

These are flashy statement pieces---that’ll turn heads. We loved the long sleeve button shirts with a south of the border/folk art themes.

NOTE: Cohen employs single women in her native Mexico to turn her designs—and the line is currently available stateside in Fred Segal and Jinny in Columbus, Ohio.

HILLHOUSE NATURALS ALL AMERICAN MADE HOME SCENTS

Words Judith Ecochard, Images courtesy of Hillhouse Naturals

It’s no secret everyone we know is spending more time at home…and that what $s our pals are spending tends to go towards creating the nest of their (affordable) dreams.

One easy way to create an environment that’s luxuriously welcoming is by way of a clean and pure smelling abode.

Lucky us, Earth Day delivered some samples from HILLHOUSE NATURALS, a Kentucky based, mom/daughter (Peggy Batts and Tracy Sullivan) home grown business -that sells elegantly packaged, accessibly priced home fragrance products.

The eco-friendly Hillhouse Natural Living and Living Green™ Collections are both
made from authentic blends of essential oils and botanicals.

The Natural Living conjures up the pure air of the Southwest desert via clean burning 100% Soy Wax Candle- stylish reusable concrete container ($32), a Living Room and Linen Spray Mist ($22) a Potpourri Bag ($19) and Gift Set ($21) and our always use- Reed Diffuser ($43) containing bamboo reeds that spread the love.

The Living Green Collection includes a 100% natural soy wax blend candle and enriching plant-derived essential green ingredients in four scents that evoke pristine Nature …no cloying odd chemical scents!

And as Tracy Sullivan informed us:

"Eco-style is a big trend right now, and this is my interpretation of it for the younger generation. The designs are clean and modern, and so are the scents. Living Green was the first collection to use boxes manufactured with wind power (which we now use for all new Hillhouse Naturals products)."

YEAH!

Aromatic blends include two top selling Spring scents Sprout, and Flora (a lemon, verbena, lavender soothing scent), ... and the exotics Orange Leaf Amber (a seductive fusion of earthy vetiver, lavender, chamomile, juicy orange, and rich ylang ylang), and Red Currant Nectarine (a sweet, cool fragrance.)

IMHO- Hillhouse Natural’s goodies certainly live up to the quality of European brands that cost three times as much.

GREEN DEPOT, 222 Bowery and the WALDORF ASTORIA HOTEL- Midtown Manhatttan

Part of our Earth Day’s (week) must attend events, was a sustainable lifestyle cocktail/conference in the new to us Manhattan branch of Green Depot… a retail/trade emporium stocked with environmental friendly building and household supplies (including bestselling cleaning items).

A highlight was our chat with Steve Davies, Director of Communications and Public Affairs of NatureWorks®LLC -a company that processes Ingeo™-a plant sugar into a proprietary NatureWorks® biopolymer –that’s ‘eco aware-ly’ transformed (meaning uses less fossil fuel, less greenhouse gas emissions to process) into fiber, bottles, containers, plastic bags, non woven wipes, diapers etc. The end products offer “the potential of more recovery options” too.

We wrote extensively about the science of it all last year…and are happy to see that Ingeo™ petro-free offerings have really gained traction in the consumer marketplace…with major companies embracing this unique green material.

Part of the day’s celebration was the fifth annual Ingeo™ Earth Month in conjunction with the LOHAS Eve of Sustainability reception where the official scoop on giant snack food company, Frito Lay’s use of Ingeo™ plastic - comprising 33% of every 10 1/2 oz SUNCHIPS® bag—with a target of 100% compostable bag by 2010...was announced.

We felt the bag and detected no difference---a good thing as the development stage took three years to perfect.

Davies also proudly showed us giftcards from Apple Computers-now made from Ingeo™ plastic and Earth’s Best organic foods new-and sure to be a top selling-baby diapers.

For the 411 on the later necessary item, we had a talk with the congenial Sam Kestenbaum, an Associate Brand manager at the Hain Celestial Group (HAIN).

Noting that chlorine-free diapers was the “next logical step” for the organic baby foods producer, Kestenbaum highlighted his company’s use of Ingeo™ as a major ‘ingredient’ (around 20%) of Earth’s Best TenderCare® diapers. For those not in the know, this is a major positive as used disposable (but NOT decomposable) diapers continue to clog up landfills around the world.

We think it’s a real step in the right direction---taking everyday disposable necessities to some---and including “renewable resources” elements that break down.

LUXURY ECO TRAVEL

As snowboarders, we’ve have spent some serious coinage surfing the powder on VAIL MOUNTAIN in Colorado. We were jazzed to see Vail Resorts on the list of sponsors for this Earth Day event.

Makes total sense---as one reason active types ride (or hike) the slopes is to get immersed in Nature.

Fortunately, we got some face time with Julie Klein, the Director of Environmental Affairs at this RockResorts locale.

Like most ski resorts, Vail “has minimum programs” in place for years that adhere to sustainable practices…recycling, automatic towel, linen re-use at hotels, souce renewable energy via solar panels.

Even more so now---with the two thumbs up from the executive management team led by Robert Katz, guests and shareholders (MTN) this four seasons destination resort is embracing green values as a core value via with several programs like offsetting energy by purchasing wind power energy credits, using snowmelt for ‘gray water’ use and geothermal heating systems, and green building areas of the resort like the West Lionshead section-into a…

“…multi-use pedestrian village consisting of residences, a hotel, offices, retail shops and restaurants, mountain operations facilities, a public parking garage, a new gondola and related skier portal and a public park. This development is one of the first projects to be accepted into the U.S. Green Building Council's new LEED for Neighborhood Development (LEED-ND) certification program."

The above we quote from the VAIL RESORTS website.

“What’s good for business is good for the environment too, “ Klein noted…we’ve got to be progressive …and do what we can to be legitimate.”

AMEN.

Though not technically part of Earth Day fests---we couldn’t help but notice that two resorts we learned about at a Canadian Media event last week---are “eco” in practice without the fanfare.

The British Columbian luxury hideaway- KING PACIFIC LODGE is a remote floating wilderness barge/lodge (15,000 sq. ft.) nestled along the shore of the pristine Barnard Harbor, Princess Royal Island. Reached by seaplane or boat, this all-inclusive upscale resort has no permanent inhabitants or structures (its towed to a winter home!)---as befits its locale in the lush Great Bear Rainforest.

Adventurous travelers can enjoy five-star comfort (Jacuzzis/plunge baths, first class ultra fresh food/wines, well-appointed guest rooms) after a hike, a day of fly or sea fishing, whale or bird watching, kayaking … and/or a jaunt onboard a helicopter for the ultimate experience. The pampered few can also opt for a slower pace too and sign up for one of several packaged experiences (special spa or culinary extravagances) - in the “unparalleled” scenery of this fragile environment.

Importantly, an environmental (and economic) partnership with a coalition of native peoples, the British Columbian government and private enterprise ensures complete protection of this 21 million acre temperate rainforest that is the only home of the rare Kermode ”spirit bear.”

INFO: KING PACIFIC LODGE

ECHO VALLEY RANCH & SPA beckons travelers year round with its unique blend of refreshing classic spa therapies and magical wilderness setting for adventurers… “amidst the expansive four distinct biomes-desert, boreal forest grass lands and marshes” in the Cariboo Mountains and Marble Range.

Steeped in history, this area of British Columbia offers outstanding pursuits for active types (heli-hiking, bird watching, fly-casting lessons, horseback riding, dining al fresco by the campfire, wildlife immersions to view grizzlys with The Lodge at Chilco Lake ) and the culturally curious (excursions to a native teepee village, a frontier ranch).

For those in reflective mode, the natural surroundings connect one’s need to unwind and reflect-expertly aided by the unique Asian inspired Baan Thai Spa, where professional therapists sooth away modern day aches and stresses in splendid (authentic) surroundings.

We plan on a jaunt ourselves…and look forward to discovering even more.

JOHN LOBB: NEW -LA MOGADOR BESPOKE COLLECTION and RTW FALL 2009 SHOES and ACCESSORIES

West 54th Street, NYC
April 23rd, 2009

Words, images Judith Ecochard

An intimate presentation is an ideal setting in which to preview collections from luxury brands.

Last week, we took in the new styles and reinterpreted classics of the made-to-measure and ready-to-wear lines from France’s hundred plus years old cobbler, John Lobb- in such a locale.

It gave us a (leisurely) chance to admire the artistry… up close and personal. And lucky for us, one of John Lobb’s acclaimed Master Craftsman, Paul Wilson, was available to answer questions and understandably so, lovingly point out the expertly applied details that make a bespoke shoe worth the cost ($6000 and up)- of every hand stitch and hand polished nuance.

To commemorate the company’s relocation of all aspects of its business (workshops, bespoke salon, corporate offices and the famous climate controlled last storage space)- to new stately quarters at 32 Rue de Mogador near the Paris Opera…in, naturally, Paris, France.

John Lobb is offering clients handsome selections of laboriously made oxfords, slip-ons and boots all finished with a sole hand polished in “Mogador purple.” (A deep eggplant purple shade).

One gentlemanly elegant shoe we admired-is the made from one piece of primo leather “Mogador Phillip II Oxford” with a round toe. The stitched and punching details hand applied on the toe cap, vamp and facings reflect the high level technical know-how inherent to any pair of John Lobb kickers.

And for clients, knowing that the shoe’s inner layers are also made from top quality leather (while other high end cobblers often use resin and a heat activated stiffner) –is secretly satisfying. And clearly ensures a more exacting and comfortable fit.

Our other top pick is the suave “Patrick Magador” boot---a true knockout. With a piped quarter that is curved instead of coming straight down into the sole, the visually appealing shoe is exceptionally comfortable as well as a refreshed modern looking shoe.

For the RTW collection ($1100-$1700), suede and top quality leathers are also used---and as always, every step of the “hand” production process---is readily apparent.

The new “kick-around” sports shoe has a unique sole treatment that we think will make this versatile ped covering very popular.

NEW: A collection of wallets and billfolds made from the delicate and costly Australian crocodile (the Crocodylus porosus).

FACTOID: An oxford in white leather, polished in a dusty pink for a Japanese client was one of the most unusual color requests.

DOONEY & BOURKE: FALL 2009 PREVIEW

CARRYALLS, ACCESSORIES & GIFTABLES REFRESHED FOR A LIFETIME OF USE

April 21st, 2009
West 26th Street, NYC

Words, Images Judith Ecochard

One of the smartest (inner/outer zipped and snapped compartments/pockets, adjustable shoulder strap, inner key hook),

durable (thick, dark brown Italian cowskin),

and thoughtfully visual (contrast white stitching, solid gold hardware),

bags we own----- a Dooney & Bourke -LUCY BAG is our sturdy everyday hauler. That our nearby straphangers on the subway-often toss off a “nice bag.”

Happily, Dooney & Bourke, an affordable high-end carry-all and accessories company managed to (once again) serve up a versatile and well priced collection for Fall 2009---with a clear editorial viewpoint that we think-further establishes this entity as iconic American brand.

IMHO
There is a D&B hobo, tote, duffle, wristlets, shoulder bag etc for every, any age gal out there…no matter where she might dwell, what she’s doing…or where she’s going…at tagged at sane amounts, given the exceptional quality... (mostly from $100-$300).

PREVIEW HIGHLIGHTS:

The popular Dillen Leather Collection has “been done in a new way” by way of-

Availability in fifteen shades (white with contrasting tan trim, dark brown tmoro with matching trim, etc), and in many silhouettes including the doctor bag shaped Juliette (small and large), and a tear drop hobo. We loved the adjustable canvas shoulder strap…a stylish textured contrast to the leather handles.

“Peter (Dooney-a co-founder) loves to do suede all year round” … a material that “takes color so well.” For Fall 2009 this is wonderfully transformed into a handsome, Lee suede tote with a durable suede bottom in a same or contrasting color..

Palette options -like autumnal tones wine, fir, red, chamois, and moss green- as well as neutrals- punch up haulers that carry the suburban mundane (groceries) or the sublime urban night life accoutrements- the gazillion gadgets, wallet, makeup bags, and extra pairs of shoes we deem crucial to our very existence.

Weather friendly nylon also gets serious play- in versatile totes, satchels, a zipped hobo shaped Erica Sac, a roomy Pouchette, and a large duffle. These will sell well and are far superior to a certain European version that was the “it” bag for awhile.

Dooney and Bourke’s products are also a step-up from similar brands, with the added flourishes of solid leather handles, the signature leather hangtag, and suede bottoms- bumping the selections beyond the casual only category.

The classics looks are “new again” too. Featuring more structure in shape and feel-a welcome relief from all of the oversized slouch carryalls that don’t work for us as we can’t find anything inside.

The Alto line is one of our top choices- with the always chic equestrian influenced Saddle and Horseshoe Flap shoulder bags with handsome strap details. (In black, neutral, red, saddle and brown tmoro) and saddle stitching.

We also think the oversized croc pattern in the aptly named Croco Collection will capture eyeballs. An assortment of shapes and clever accessories are available in a rainbow assortment of colors. We’re sure the print editorial type will feature the Luna Bag (3/4 moon)…in a regular or large size.

Giftables—, most retailing for under $100—like a mini writing journal, planner, etc…are sure to be appreciated by any recipient-male or female…or oneself.

And in a nod to the RTW fashions we saw all over the runways two months ago, a handsome red or navy tartan wool fabric revs up a collection with sizes ranging from zipped cosmetic cases-to a cute pochette- to a large duffle.

A travel set in shiny, rain resistant black patent leather, including the we want it rolling duffle and carry ons –adds pizzazz to local or far flung jaunts…and eliminate the need for that red ribbon we tie on to distinguish luggage from all the look-alikes.

The popular Zebra print is a holdover from previous collections. We actually prefer the new Giraffe pattern however (a Rothschild looking design of black/brow tones) in the tear drop shape.

Eye catching giftables (shopping guide, a key chain…all priced under $100) also work well as standalone items---as amazingly we can see this animal design working with a lot of different wardrobe items we own.

BOLDRINI BRIDLE

The limited edition BOLDRINI handbags are “100% crafted by hand of the finest Italian leathers” by skilled artisans who have cobbling skills in their DNA.

Neither ostentatious nor logo laden like other luxury brands, this special collection is only available in Dooney & Bourke stores. Our favorite shape is the Tabbed Messenger bag, graced with the Boldrini insignia…and seemingly made from one piece of leather.

The cognac, soft pleated satchels (trapezoid shaped) are topped with elegant leather handles with hand stitches along the edges.

The kind of bag that gets silent approving glances from those carrying haulers costing 3x the price.

IN THE WORKS:
A Croc satchel…

PLUS: Handsome stainless steel watches with Swiss parts and oversized faces in matching leather bands. Hefty enough to be a piece of statement jewelry.

Luxe multi-ply cashmere scarves and gloves ...and leather gloves in rich primary colors.

SPECIAL MENTION: Love the PURPLE.

As soon as we walked in, after a hello to the receptionist…our eyeballs locked on the Fall 2009 handbags, satchel, hobos, clutches and carryalls by the upscale European brand MCM.

No surprise, the logo laden satchel VISETOS VINTAGE in cognac, an iconic look- is the best seller.

New for Fall is the NIGHT TRAIN adaptable luggage, that inventively zips and expands to accommodate a suit. Great as a weekender or for longer jaunts as it’s got loads of inner compartments.

We appreciated how we could carry this onboard a commercial flight as it’s just the right size.

Other popular options are the leather embossed VINTAGE CROCO top handle tote or medium sized shoulder bag. A top pick!

And it’s nice to see the color pop---in a ginger orange and plum purple---shades in an assortment of MCM offerings.

A former Wall Streeter, Zachary Prell knows the details necessary for the ne plus ultra tailored shirt that’s not baggy or too tight (uptight). His handsome button downs are well made, fit great (cut for an athletic build)…and importantly, have that office to night’s out swagger.

Prell’s shirts also sport ingenious finishes like a second button that’s higher up—so it’s tie-less friendly and wider cuffs (regular and French) for the big watches that guys wear.

Fabrics are cottony soft (with touch of spandex for shape retention) and the masculine palette ranges from solids with cool side stripes--- to masculine stripe patterns.

Nordtrom’s wisely picked up the line--- and smart boutiques (Bill Hallman, W Hotel Stores etc from coast to coast.

Damages- around $150-$198/shirt. And there are long sleeve polos too.

Antsy (L) and NOLITA (R)

ANTSY is known for their edgy graphics, free flowing tops. Jeans are also part of the lineup, launching in three categories:

BLACK HALO has a large celeb following with its feminine modern classics that’ll work with all body types. Rompers and a fetching frock in tartan (MSRP$310) are highlights for Fall.

Widely available, the collection is priced right.
INFO: BLACK HALO

Acclaimed for their knits and signature totes outfitting Hollywood types and stylish feminine gals, Foley + Corinna (Dana, Anna respectively) has a four season knockout in a glam fushia ruched dress.

Draped attire with a vintage/modern flair ensure that their eponymous NY and LA boutiques continue to serve up the entire line---with numerous retail stores here and across the Pond in London and Paris carrying the collection.

INFO: FOLEY + CORINNA

Hailing from the land Down Under, Tigerlily is a “perfectly-imperfect” very sexy glam edgy line of sportswear that’s sure to gain followers in the USA.

Swimwear is a big seller (naturally) but we loved some of the Fall “boy meets girl” looks, particularly a gray fringed number with a hood.

INFO:
TIGERLILY

Los Angeles based HeartLoom makes the kind of separates that the under thirty types are drawn to. Tanks, rompers, sweaters and a cute dress with mod studs on the sleeves are accessibly tagged between $50-$200.

There are versatile shirtdresses and cool denim looks too…perfect for that LA formal vibe.
Available at Singer22.com, Revolveclothing.com

Men get a bump up, dress-wise- with COMMONWEALTH UTILITIES. This made in Italy by Brit Anthony Keegan and Aussie Richard Christiansen …has great knits and solid separates…including a three-piece suit (sold separately), single lapel blazers, a swank black leather bomber jacket…and handsome trenches.

Kudos to the website that has the entire Fall/Holiday look book online. This is a duo we would love to grab a Pint with.

A BARNEY’S NEW YORK BREAKFAST ON ORGANIC BEAUTY/SKINCARE

J. Ecochard

PARTICIPANTS: HORST RECHELBACHER-INTELLIGENT NUTRIENTS CERTIFIED ORGANIC HEALTH AND BEAUTY, SYLVIE CHANTECAILLE-CHANTECAILLE COSMETICS & SKINCARE, BRYAN MEEHAN-NUDE SKINCARE, YAEL ALKALAY- RED FLOWER

HOST: SARAH BROWN-BEAUTY EDITOR VOGUE MAGAZINE

FRED’S RESTAURANT-BARNEY’S NEW YORK, Madison Avenue/61st Street

April 21st, 2009

Words Judith Ecochard
Images-from company websites

It was a packed house and a virtual sea of black attired, impossibly groomed women that attended this breakfast, gabfest-panel discussion on the organic/green universe of skincare and beauty treatments.

We arrived a bit late (night owls that we are) but got there just in time for the smart repartee of Sarah Brown…a savvy journalist and commanding moderator.

Interesting, to us- her shared attitudes on needing to feel a head full of lather when she washes her hair (and the not exactly healthy for the environment/body chemicals to get all those bubbles) represents the typical American---used to copious amounts of fresh running water at the turn of a faucet.

And we were thinking about all the fresh water needed to rinse the suds away…and how we all need to adjust our expectations on what beauty goodies should do. A bit of finger wagging.

In a way though, that was the point of this informative gathering. As beauty consumers, upscale types do not want to compromise on efficacy, and the feel and scent of what they use and are familiar with.

Fortunately, that is a mute issue IMHO—as indicated by some of the terrif products that the panel members’ companies sell.

MAJOR TAKEAWAYS:

HORST RECHELBACHER, founder of skin/haircare and supplements laden-INTELLIGENT NUTRIENTS, was the leading light behind Aveda (now part of Estee Lauder conglomerate). He made the point that if one wouldn’t eat it, why would anyone put it on one’s skin (which absorbs it all, after all).

Amazingly, Rechelbacher made certain that his goodies are USDA CERTIFIED ORGANIC (the toughest standard out there) ---and made the point that Intelligent Nutrients took the time to source, and produce to meet these massive requirements. Wow.

Afterwards, we got a ‘roots to ends’ dose of the Finishing Gloss a hair conditioning treatment that moisturizes locks.
Safe for color treated hair, the aromatic liquid is plant based, non-toxic and pleasingly aromatic.

SLYVIE CHANTECAILLE is an amazing woman (yup, she looks great too). Her plant based line of skincare and cosmetics often begins their life in a lab, spawn from processes akin to stem cell technology.

Meaning the ability to grow plants’ positive attributes from a few cells, in a pure environment---without destroying the world’s environment to get the benefits. Botanicals are also discovered in far flung destinations too---that are blessed with inherent properties that are beneficial.

Chantecaille passionately urged the audience to avoid anything with palm oil, even certified coconut oil, as pristine tropical forests worldwide are being destroyed to grow the fast sprouting coconut trees…to meet the consumer demand. BAD!!!!

Packaging matters too, according to this entrepreneur. Europeans beauty elixirs are always in glass bottles---as it prevents oxidation (degradation) of the ingredients.

BRYAN MEEHAN has always been environmentally aware---he was the brains behind Fresh Foods in the UK –now Whole Foods. Together with environmental activist, fashion designer and wife of U2’s lead dude Bono, Ali Newsome, Meehan launched NUDE (Edun spelled backwards) SKINCARE.

Two years in the making, Nude Skincare “is expensive…but spends a fortune on ingredients…and clinical trials,” to prove that this anti-aging skincare line is effective.

J. Ecochard

Meehan gave us a visual too---dropping a tea bag in water---and indicating how Nude sources the powerful active molecules that accumulate at the bottom…versus the top clear part. POINT: Any company can claim it uses organic ingredients (teas in this case) but it matters how active/concentrated the ingredients are.

We got a relaxing facial downstairs in Barney’s lower level beauty emporium …and we can verify that the Nude Skincare treatments used on us had an immediate POSITIVE effect…as we had zilcho sleep the night prior - and looked it. Afterwards, our dark circles vanished and our dermis felt hydrated but not greasy.
Special Thanks to the Raul Flores!

Nude Skincare employs pre and probiotic ingredients that are safely metabolized by the body and sport the same Ph 5.5 acid level as human skin so it’s easily absorbed. The bestseller is the Cleansing Facial Oil loaded with Omega 3 and Vitamin E to get the grit out and makeup spackle off.

Other top choices: the Advanced Smoothing Complex and Replenishing Night Oil both contain powerful antioxidants that combat the free radical attack. “It’s pure, wonderful and it works,” noted Meehan. We concur.

YAEL ALKALAY has a green lifestyle in her DNA. We remember when her company RED FLOWER, launched teas and six gloriously smelling candles that came packaged with dried flowers/plants on top. Since then, the pure smelling (divine, transporting) collection has expanded to include soaps, body lotion (we got a sample and love the rich moisturizer that soothed our paws), hair products and diffusers.

“The wheel is going,” Alkalay observed, with clients demanding a hand crafted rare product that meaningfully adheres to the Green.

“Its only common sense to use a plant,” with eco ingredients existing that are as equally effective as the fake stuff.

“Eco is meeting luxury…” and not a minute too soon.

KENNETH COLE RTW FALL 2009:

PLUS SILVER 925’s CHIC HEELED COMFORT DEBUTS

Words, Images Judith Ecochard

Midtown, NYC

April 15th, 2009

Last week’s presentation of the NYC based Kenneth Cole's Fall lineup for men and women was packed with so many wearable/desirable/well made separates and accessories…THAT

We think consumers more interested in getting a quality, in trend garment…and in reality, a better bang for the buck than the cheaply made hyper trendy stuff at H&M…should take a careful look at KC’s collection when it hits the stores in late summer.

Displayed on mannequins and on portable garment racks, items for practically any age or body type- of fashion aware individuals- were equally serving up versatile office cubicle to buzzin’ nights’ out worthy pieces mixed up with casual attire, carryalls that’ll stylishly hold one’s life, and terrif footwear.

As soon as we entered the spacious, art gallery cool headquarters on 11th Avenue in midtown, we got energized- by the chicly outfitted security detail…in Kenneth Cole (DUH).

The presentation for us---began after trying on the amazingly comfortable, special edition, snazzy silver heeled pumps featuring a patented cushioning system.

It’s a wonder we didn’t walk off with them (our size)---as the pair of kickers did everything a high heeled shoe should…elongate out legs, adding a dose of sex appeal to our ensemble…but cushioning our walked out NY sidewalk feet, courtesy of memory foam---the material so ubiquitous in mattress padding.

There’s also unique flaxseed pillows in the arches to “cradle and support,” soft rubber soles to “enhance flexibility,” and the pumps are lined with sheepskin (huh?) “to breathe a welcome sign of relief.”

Nice.

THE CLOTHES AND ALL:

Kenneth Cole…like DKNY…has a modern edgy city slick vibe.

Guy items include a fab zipped winter heavy leather jacket cool enough for Hells Angels but not a slave to the biker look,

distressed and dressier dark denim jeans, flat front chinos, puffer vests, pocketed wool and cotton front pocketed button downs, sleek black worker perfect black blazer and slacks, and boxy American cut dark suits (wearable separately too)…etc, etc.

Naturally, male friendly messenger bags, snow ready lace up boots with grip rubber trends, polished dark leather slips on and long wool scarves, aviators, and fitted knit caps complete ensembles…the latter providing a pop of color against the largely neutral autumnal palette.

Women’s looks were as equally wearable and contemporary.

Thick and thin leather belts gave feminine shapes to quilted charcoal gray ski jacket, a side button dark tartan above the knee dress,

a multi-pocketed black and white lumberjack plaid mini,

a flowing silk dress in vivid yellow, and a top pick---black leather vest.

Shrunken and boyfriend length blazers smarten up many ensembles…as do a studded chunky heel black leather boots, lace ups inspired by men’s oxfords, silver side buckled and equestrian style boots, and plush satchels in the always correct hobo shape.

Textures were varied…patent leather, metallics, and a subtle black and white animal print.

Tasteful chain link multi color metal necklaces and chandelier style earrings, and grey knit fitted caps and scarves provide more shine and depth to a well thought out collection.

This is as close to idiot proof shopping we can think of. No major chances but enough newness for an economically strained (or restrained) customers.

Truly.

EARTH DAY: EVERYDAY

The Natural Dentist, Sierra Designs, Mission Playground, Osprey
April 21, 2009

Words Judith Ecochard

Images from company websites

The cutback on hard copy “Green” magazine issues …is a sign of economic crunching but not indicative of the growing willingness of consumers to embrace all things sustainable.

Physical reads are not printed on recycled paper anyway and feature “eco” along side decidedly non-eco stuff.

--- AND the story angle of REINVENTING ‘nutty crunchy’ organic fashion and grooming products is tired. Good eco materials are ubiquitous with plenty of affordable organic textiles and ingredients (for beauty/grooming items) out there.

In contrast, the active wear/outdoor gear and personal health industry have embraced sustainable ‘green’ business practices, from cradle to cradle, for many years ago.

And in honor of Earth Day---our picks for products that are a ‘given,’ or should be.

PERSONAL CARE: The Natural Dentist
Our dentist (Jennifer Jablow) is one smart woman ---and she uses some Natural Dentist oral health care products. We like the entire collection for our pearly whites cause it gets the job done with clinically proven natural ingredients- and without the scary chemicals that will probably cause humans to naturally (ahem) glow in the dark.

The latest treatments- The Natural Dentist Pre-Brush Whitening Rinse
Flavor - Clean Mint and The Natural Dentist All Natural Antigingivitis Rinse
Flavor - Peppermint Sage- are both effective liquids that we feel okay with swallowing by mistake.

The Pre-Brush Whitening Rinse
is a fav. It has natural silica from bamboo powder for whitening and stain removal, Peppermint and Sage Oils to help prevent and reduce plaque and gingivitis (the earliest form of gum disease), cleansing ingredients: Grapefruit Seed Extract, Menthol, Xylitol and soothing ingredients: Aloe Vera Gel, and Vegetable Glycerin.

For us, it’s the mint flavor that gets us up. And there’s no bleach or peroxide either.

The Natural Dentist All Natural Antigingivitis Rinse
Flavor - Peppermint Sage is a unique tasting, long lasting breath fresh-ner that is burn free (no alcohol). It has Xylitol, a natural occurring sugar in the mix—that’s effective against the main cavity causing bacteria. Other palatable ingredients include refreshing and soothing Peppermint and Sage Oils to help prevent and reduce plaque and gingivitis (the earliest form of gum disease), and cleansing ingredients: Grapefruit Seed Extract, and Menthol.

And as with all Natural Dentist products there’s no alcohol, artificial sweetners, dyes or preservatives.

PRICE ALERT: Both rinses now available at $6.99 for 16 oz bottle.

Very cool attitude and we hope contagious.

ÉDITÉ SHOWROOM –RAFAEL YOUNG- “URBANIZING HAUTE COUTURE SHOES” STATESIDE DEBUT

Words, Images Judith Ecochard

April 14th, 2009
Garment Center NYC

Ironically---it’s a fashion biz syndrome that those who toil in this trade HATE SHOPPING. Yeah, we think those print editorial types are TOTALLY lying when their opinions about “what’s on their must have buy list for (fill in the season)…” appear in the glossies.

HOWEVER…

There is one item…a shoe, a dress, a jacket…that grabs our eyeballs like no other…and simply possesses us. And it’s that item that we splurge on…and wear forever.

Because even though the accessory or garment we covet in a passionately hormonal way… doesn’t fit into the “classics” or “basics” categories (ho-hum, boring would that be the object of our dreams…NO).

The innovative, original style, the materials, and the craftsmanship that produce our field of dreams--- are always out of the park homeruns.

And we found our Fall/Winter 2009 “IT”---actually it is a collection by the immensely talented shoe designer, Raphael Young. We can see why the Parisians have flocked to this outstanding lineup of meticulously made in Italy shoes.

It’s the creative designs, particularly the over the knee boots, and the inventive cutout platform heels-- scupltures really…that render these shoes attention grabbing/ statement-making kickers.

These are the kind of ped coverings that make an outfit, that are the outfit.

Although the samples in the showroom are Munchkin size, (no try-ons for us) we could see that the interior construction of the lineup- allows for a modicum of comfort…with pitched inside platforms that level the foot out a bit. Which makes sense given Young’s background in Physics---he gets the structural flow.

Young zeroes in on the popularity of metallics...often switched up with black leather cutouts…but for us it was the black leather thigh highs and black ribbed (in a semi-circle), white leather booties with Brancusi worthy stacked heels-that we see as our one purchase of the season.

In yucky economic times…isn’t that what retailers should be doing? Exciting consumers?. Awesome silvery gray mesh kickers? We all have the basics already…and those looks aren’t getting us to whip out the credit card.

FUN INSPIRATION: Superhero ladies.

THE BODY SHOP AND MTV’S STAYING ALIVE FOUNDATION SAY “YES, YES, YES” TO SAFE SEX

OFFICIAL LAUNCH WITH SPOKESWOMAN ARTIST/MUSICIAN SOLANGE KNOWLES

MEET AT THE APARTMENT, 101 Crosby Street, NYC
APRIL 14th, 2009

Words, and Event Images- Judith Ecochard

Perhaps more sobering- in a not good way- than filing one’s taxes is the statistic that over 3000 new HIV infections are a daily reality among young adults ages 15-24. (IMHO an underestimate on a global basis!)

At the official launch for The Body Shop’s unisex moisturizing Tantalizing Lip Butter balm ($8)---in collaboration with MTV----of the “Yes, Yes, Yes to Safe Sex” campaign, we were lucky enough to meet the smart, articulate…and yes, stunning Solange Knowles, this year’s face, voice, heart and soul--- for the beneficiary ($5 per/sale), Staying Alive Foundation.

IMAGE FROM THE STAYING ALIVE WEBSITE

The morning began with safe sex tips from the ebullient Sex Expert Dr. Shari Locker, author of “The Complete Idiots Guide To Sex” ---which kinda relaxed attendees that skewed under 35 yrs old, but who were weirdly static (or lacking sufficient caffeine?).

A congenial spokesperson for the Staying Alive Foundation---a name we didn’t catch (Danny?)…opened his remarks with a funny quip along the lines of how“…great (it is) to talk about condoms at 10:30 in the morning.” Then he introduced this year's spokesperson for this 501 (c)3.

And from behind a previously closed curtain, an appropriate vignette was revealed---a red bed accessorized with pillows sporting slogans---that served as a backdrop for a group of gals and the headliner, the very talented Solange Knowles’ delivering her prepared remarks and answering questions.

Poised beyond her years (22!)…the singer, sister of Beyoncé …commented how important it is for her “…to erase the cultural stigma of talking about safe sex.”
“I’m excited about the campaign,” she added...and am “happy to serve and have a voice.”

Yup, those aforementioned stats got to the young performer too. Knowles also acknowledged that although there are many campaigns out there that preach either abstinence or safe sex…the reality is that more needs to be done to reach out to young people about safe sex practices, and “…I like what the Staying Alive Campaign is about.”

Responding to a question about her upbringing, Knowles informed us that “my parents gave the real deal to me to make decisions…because the reality is young people have sex.” (Yes, they do in Alaska and the lower 48.)

Knowles also answered our question on support from Obama and his administration …and her thoughtful answer touched on how inspiring our new President is. And impactful…”reaching out to us to feel the importance of serving.”

Lastly Knowles commented on artistry as an “outlook of expression” versus the pressures of being role models. For her, she sees a return to the activism of 60’s musicians like Bob Dylan and Marvin Gaye---singer/songwriters who crafted/snag songs that “reached out on specific issues.”

And how.

“It’s coming back around,” Knowles added, “…but to be an advocate or poster child …is tough.”

“Still, artists should stand for something.”

And we were totally wowed.

W 29th STREET SHOWROOM: FALL 2009 COLLECTIONS:

HOUSE OF DAGMAR

STEiNUNN, HOUSE OF DAGMAR, AHSISH, RODEBJER, MAISE, M/M, MARGARITA SAPLALA, TOMOKO IGARASHI, DRAUGSVOLD, CANDACE ANG, IOSSELLIANI

Words, Images Judith Ecochard

Icelandic designer Steinunn Sigurðar is one of our favorite fashion designers. Her sophisticated textured separates and dresses, with elegant complex ruffled details, and architecturally intricate silhouettes are unique. The collections are made from sumptuous fabrics-found nowhere else- including her signature knitwear ---sourced from mills that span the globe. The collection is the essence of everything a collection should be… meaning handcrafted luxury that’s timeless.

We were very happy to see STEiNUNN’s Fall 2009 Collection at the W. 29th Street Showroom.

And added pluses…we got quick peeks at the other fashion and accessories’ lines that this well edited establishment carries.

STEiNUNN, as always, is inspired by the landscape of her native country…its plants, mineral rich volcano lava, and icy, frozen tundra. She also infuses this season’s collection with shots of stark blues from the sea and sky----with monikers “Petro” and “Lagoon.”

This collection deserves more retail outlets in the States…because exclusive consumers of high-end attire will appreciate STEiNUNN’s mandate to create “barbaric, feminine” garments that “…is (are) art that you wear.”

INFO: STEiNUNN

HOUSE OF DAGMAR is a youngish Swedish fashion house that got some Stateside buzz and love when they debuted during the 2007 Gen Arts/New York Fashion Week.

We lucked out that one of the three sisters that own the line, Kristina Tjäder, was on hand to show us the sexy collection inspired by the concept of “Protection,” (a common theme these days!).

We saw: voluminous woven knit tops to pair with tight leggings or super slim denim with sassy outer side zips the entire length of the leg, a woven corset dress, and sensuous flirty cocktail frocks.

“We don’t buy into the mantra of fearful…or the global malaise,” Tjäder observed. But, armor-type elements are melded into the line via metal chain straps and metallic knits.

We really liked the Gigi-esque blouson jacket, a draped, ruffle black knit dress (on the designer)… and a soft velvet mini.

Tjäder lived in Paris for four years… that helps to explain chic Euro-ness of the line.

That, and talent.

Hot off the catwalk of a fun London Fashion Week Show- are the splashy sequins laden tops and “sporty” mini dresses by Ashish Gupta, an Indian designer based in across the Pond.

We have noticed the trend of wearing evening attire during the day…dialing down the oft’ over-the-top separates with casual pieces- for wearable daytime looks.

Looks for gals who want to get noticed!

Ashish’s creations can certainly fit this category with Bollywood sparkle and glitter galore…

RETAIL: Browns in London.

W29th also reps other lines including the edgy Scandic, RODEBJER collection by FIT trained Carin RODEBJER …

The bold digital flower prints that add some much needed color for Fall---by MARGARITA SAPLALA.

Aussie premium denim line MAISE-with a zipped ankle detail we covet…designed by Sydney livin' , former Topshop laborer, Claire Greaves...

AND totally new to us…the line M/M by Japanese designer Masayuki Marukawa---who has a timeless gray knit dress with an modern deconstructive vibe to it.

Jewelry lines at W29th ranged from one of a kind pieces by Tomoko Igarashi,

We could've have walked off with this statement piece by Pretty Young Things, a magnificent silver cuff (by Arlene Guerra).

Multi-strand necklaces and earrings from the affordable (and hip) A/W collection named “Blah, Blah” by DRAUGSVOLD- a Brooklyn based duo who scour their surroundings for vintage and found objects….

Fringed necklaces that pay homage to Hendrix and Sargent Pepper…from the aptly coined “Here Comes The Band” collection by CANDACE ANG

And delicate gold bracelets and rings with reverse settings by IOSSELLIANI, a made in Italy collection…adorned with semi-precious stones, Swarovski rhinestones.

Our top picks from this line---are the skull cameos.

FRATELLI ROSSETTI FALL/WINTER 2009

LUXURY ITALIAN BRAND MEN’S, WOMEN’S SHOES and ACCESSORIES

April 8, 2009

ITALIAN CONSULATE Park Avenue, NYC

Words, Images Judith Ecochard

We finished reading the NY Times bestseller, “Deluxe How Luxury Lost Its Luster,” by Dana Thomas-the other day---a fast paced read about the homogenization of upscale global goods.

It seemed appropriate to think about that take on the fashion business as we entered the spacious drawing room at the Italian Consulate-where the fifty-six years old Fratelli Rossetti staged their F/W 2009 collection.

This family run, Parabiago based Italian business is the glamorous epitome of hand crafted, labor-intensive produced shoes and accessories …and to us, the antithesis of some of the brands Thomas writes about (with an air of disdainful story telling we note).

Which is why, we think in a humbled economy, smaller entities like Fratelli Rossetti, that do without pricey ad campaigns, but proffer true luxury with obvious attention to details, and exclusive materials…will survive as the mammoths that cater to the mid market masses retrench.

Off our soapbox…ha, ha…we did manage to think about the highlights of the women’s and men’s collections.

For the ladies, there are chic spectator pumps (with hand perforated brogue flaps) and flat oxfords-channeling the popular menswear influences.

Mary Jane styles are refined choices made a bit more au courant with mixed textile components.

We favored the 70’s dashes of color and construction in the (we want) mixed leather suede, stacked heeled boots and pumps, and wedges with a hidden platform-rendering them comfortable!

Color Alert: Pale Pink, Rose=LOVE.

Other modern and graceful options include equestrian boots made from buttery smooth leather, and wear with everything black ankle boots made interesting with a ankle topping strap...and practical with proprietary thick rubber soles.

The satchel to own; the large matching saddlebag that seems to be made from one piece of leather.

Other handbags we covet are the chain link oversized clutches---one in a python skin, and another with a glammy crystal buckle.
And portable elegance is defined by other slouchy and constructed carryalls featuring just the right amount of hardware... with the ideal/requisite amount of inner compartments for modern day haulers.

The Men’s have dapper selections for the guy that appreciates expertly well made, hand stitched shoes.

As usual, there are never out of style, polished oxfords and slip-ons with deep patinas achieved via hours of hand applied vegetable dyes and shoe polishes.

And in a nod to over the top luxury, the croc loafers are still available, and similar to Spring 2009, are made with one pricey piece that breaks over the top just so.

One pair of kickers is subtly detailed- with raised embellishments that result from the ‘pucker’ like texture ingeniously applied to the underside of the top piece of leather.

New for 2009 are a pair of warm shearling boots, that may never feel the cold snow but will work on the shoveled sidewalks of St. Moritz.

Our guy will love the handsome Desert Boot version made from burnished, ‘distressed’ brown leather.

ROSSETTI ONE, the less costly more sporty line…ups its style quota for next year. Women’s boots served up last year---like the wedge--- are in refreshed colors and joined by trendy (but not flashy) low rubber tread plush leather boots with a visually interesting curved top…that’ll make tucking in denim or leggings, hat much easier.

There are also sidewalk friendly, stacked platform loafers and menswear inspired tie shoes.

Suede and patent loafers, ballet flats with enough heel for comfort and matching bowler bag sized satchels…round out the collection.

Men get several versions of the lifestyle urban sneaker in suede/leather mixes in low and high cuts.

Casual shoes also include basic lace-ups and rugged suede or leather ankle boots that slip on…

…and an oxford inspired pair with hand applied perforations.

An as always, the black soles are specially designed rubber treads that repel mud and debris.

RETAIL: At Fratelli Rossetti Stores in major cities and throughout Italy. Statesides boutiques are located in NYC (625 Madison Avenue), and Chicago (909 North Michigan Avenue), …and some day, we hope, in better boutiques.

PERRY ELLIS MENSWEAR- FALL 2009

Grace Building, Sixth Avenue-NYC

April 9, 2009

Words, Images Judith Ecochard

Many women we know…hit the men’s or boys clothing department to buy the classic staples---like blazers and long sleeve Oxford shirts for themselves.
…Giving real meaning to the “The Boyfriend” look.

And we thought of that as we entered the spacious Perry Ellis headquarters the other day…and got an initial glimpse of the fashionably attired mannequins…outfitted in fresh Fall 2009 separates that our boyfriends would actually wear.

And the first thought that flooded our brain cells was ‘how about a women’s line?’

We so wanted some Perry Ellis ladies’ looks…especially for our two top picks:

... a deep black leather-like (really) $80 Motorcycle-Biker jacket that’s has just enough street style cred.

And a thick, cable knit grey sweater that is a refreshing update on the unisex one everyone buys in Ireland.

LUCKY US---we got some time with John Crocco, the talented veteran Creative Director/style guru of Perry Ellis, International, who showed us the affordably priced lineup that pays homage to the brand’s “iconic Perry…of taking the traditional and changing it.”

First stop, the aforementioned grey cable sweater. Crocco pointed out how Perry Ellis took a cable knit and “…blew it up with shoulders down to here (points to about 3 inches above elbows)…” but for Fall, the cable is blown up “and put on a bias with fitted shoulders.”

Crocco’s background in all facets of the retail trade also ensured a nifty “play with prints” that in less experienced hands would not be as well finished.

Case in point the argyle v-neck with a hand finish- the pattern extending up through the ribbed trim. A detail some would miss but IMHO makes the difference between ho-hum and polished perfection.

The Fall collection had other terrific “mixed separates that are accessible…”

Like a black tux blazer that wears hip with jeans,

a sold by itself herring bone tweed waistcoat, (an office/casual look that amps up any button down or Tee), a wash tumbled leather jacket, and a grandpa style, striped long cardigan with a hip, switched up pattern.

Other staff favorites (we always ask) are the English country Norfolk fitted jacket with a narrow lapel… that is made form proprietary fabrics masterfully embedded with a woven metal that keeps the wrinkled fit just so…

A pocketed/zipped soft suede jacket in a deep turquoise blue (for under $200 WOW) and a new Desert Boot Sneaker with a cross-stitch detail.

Frankly, we didn’t see a weak link anywhere. Even the innards of the separates (linings in complimentary rich colors)… are well done.

“You have to give him affordable fashion,” Crocco noted. “It’s already a jump for the guy...we make it inspirational and not alienate anyone.”

Totally.

“DANCING the HEMPEN JIG”

April 3rd, 2009

STARWORKS NY Showroom

Soho, MANHATTAN

We ‘fess up. When we used to hear about a celeb backed/designed clothing line, our eyeballs would roll back and forth visiting the various regions of our skulls.

That all changed with the cool opus- Harajuku Lovers a garb line by the fierce Gwen Stefani. Naturally, she has HELP---but we can see that her signature flourishes/personal touches- are all over the pieces.

Which brings us to…

our chance to review the Fall 2009 Collection by actress Siena Miller and her sister Savannah, Twnety8Twelve –at the NYC showroom that reps the line.

And we really think there is a distinct fashion editorial mantra that they got going on…though the old pirate term, "Dancing The Hempen Jig"---the dance of death at the end of a hangman's rope...is not exactly the visual we are channeling.

THE COLLECTION:

A vintage/boho vibe lineup of separates include biker-ish leather jackets, cropped military style blazers, modernized 70’s menswear style trousers with matching jackets (so practical),

innovative Grecian worthy twisted/draped cotton jersey feel tops and mini dresses, a romantic knee length velvet frock coat (love), and long floral dresses.

Sienna Miller, much like the other English Fashionista Style Goddess we admire- Kate Moss-seems amazingly capable of pulling together her own looks---without much effort but always looking terrif.

We think this savvy panache is in this collection---that is inspired by “Charlie Chaplin and his famous character ‘The Tramp’, full of romantic contradictions,” the sharp angularity/androgyny of Grace Jones (who ROCKED the runway New York Fashion Week for designer Xuly Bet) and the ‘New Wave’ film movement…of revolutionary filmmaker Jean Luc Goddard.”

EDITORIAL FAV:
The cozy thick knit long cardigan/dress.

COLORS: Titian (Blue), Charcoal Marl (Dark Grey), Ebonised (Black), Lead (Grey), Newton (Peacock Blue), Scroll (Creamy Beige)

Well done.

COSTELLO TAGLIAPIETRA FALL 2009

Brooklyn Duo Still Drapes Perfection

April 3rd, 2009
Soho, NYC-STARWORKS NY SHOWROOM

Jeffery Costello and Robert Tagliapietra may look like plaid shirt attired lumberjacks…but like many gurus (in their case, masters of the draped/twisted jersey)…these two guys command a devoted cult following.

The Fall 2009 collection of sensuous dresses and separates are made of a proprietary “blend” of Ultrasuede jersey, which amazingly is drip dry…or so we were told. The précise cuts of the fabric and construction details are impeccable.

Subtle Swarovski crystal embellishments on some pieces added just a hint of sparkle.

But seeing/feeling the garments up close in the showroom…confirms that all one needs are some strappy heels/kickers to complete a LOOK.

Flattering styles are a rarity in Fashion with a capital “F” ...and Costello Tagliapietra has many ensembles that would really work for all shapes. So too the color palette---in charcoal, tobacco, cement and dark greys, autumnal orange and bone beige are basics that work on most skin tones.

DOUGLAS HANNANT SPRING 2010 BRIDAL COLLECTION:

Palm Court, Plaza Hotel, NYC

April 5th 2009

Words, Images by Judith Ecochard

Much like the elegant postwar couture shows held for guests at acclaimed French ateliers, Douglas Hannant, a designer with upscale clientele, held his second Bridal Collection in the Beaux-Arts opulence of the Plaza Hotel’s luminous Palm Court.

Editors, retail buyers and other invitees were seated in three rows of Louis XV gilded armchairs, and aurally treated to Stravinsky’s "The Rite of Spring" (Le Sacre Du Printemps), setting the stage for a 12 glorious white wedding gowns “…for the untraditional bride, the modern woman,” according to Hannant himself.

Beginning with an au courant Hollywood style chiffon bias gown, Hannant crafted several silhouettes options for his “clients…who are sophisticated and chic.”

Our opinion: every gown was a winner, made from the “finest fabrics from France and Italy” including tafetta and satin silks, delicate hand embroidered lace, and detailed with subtle embellishments of sparkling sequins or flashy white ostrich feathers.

“The simpler silhouettes are perfect for resort weddings…to wear barefoot,” Hannant noted. We agree, and feel the white tulle veiled sequin racerback gown (Look #9) and the one shoulder white satin gown (Look #5) are ideal for brides’ destination bound.

And although there were certainly no princess type wedding cake gowns, there were several show stoppers dresses that made jaw dropping entrances including a white shantung tiered pouf gown (Look #8), and the finale---a sumptuous white tulle chiffon tiered racerback gown.

SPECIAL NOTE: The variety of necklines-including the sweetheart, strapless, and racerback.

MAKEUP:

Clé de Peau makeup gave the four models Old Hollywood Glamour par excellence. Bringing a candlelit look to the face, the makeup artists used Teint Natural Crème (Cream Foundation) and Transparent Loose Powder (a sheer shade of pink that flatters most skin tones)…with complexions perfected with the best selling creamy Concealer.

Strong eyebrows, …a là Veronica Lake were aided by light applications of the Eyebrow and Eyeline Compact with additional layers of eye shadow from the neutral palette Ombres Couleurs Quadri (Eye Color Quad) applied to lids.

A shiny beige/pink lipstick, Shiseido #208, “…is a beautiful nude lip for the summer that doesn’t wash you away,” a makeup artist observed. And the ladies looked beautiful and in visages that would work for day or night occasions.

TEMPERLEY LONDON’s FALL 2009 RTW

“EXPRESS OF THE ORIENT”

April 2, 2009, SOHO-NYC

Words, Images Judith Ecochard

We missed the initial staging of designer Alice Temperley’s Fall Collection back in February…but love her artistic knit dresses that remind us of whimsical color field paintings-

So we hauled it downtown to the showroom, StarworksNY that reps this British creative talent on this side of the Pond.

IMHO: Yes, the Orient theme is elegantly played out in a opulent red rose, black and white print …as in a Aubrey Beardsley illustration… as in cocoon shape “Quilted Geisha Coat.”

BUT -The stunning evening gowns and cocktail dresses with glittering gold, hand embroidered/beaded hieroglyphics… really stole the show (we assume). Red carpet knockouts or for us mere mortals, investment pieces!!!!

And we feel confident that never, ever, ever will we see cheaper knockoffs of these gloriously ornamented items. That’s why that even in this economy, one goes for the real deal.

Temperley delivers a complete collection, full of hip daywear (mini skirts, fitted blazers, lacey blouses, skinny and harem-esque high waist pants, wide belts with jackets) and sophisticated, glam bridal too.

The buttery leather separates…biker jackets and “waistcoats” are hot, hot, hot…edged with gold zippers and feminine-shaped via detailed seams.

Highlights are Temperley’s posh accessories. Her jewel-like evening bags are standouts-with her signature Apple Bag and Orient Spheres. It’s perfect for the gal who only needs a lipstick, keys and maybe her credit card or a few Euro notes for a night out.

We are haulers, however…and really felt the leather satchels (in python print, lizard patterns) are roomy enough for gals going from office cubicles to happening restaurant banquettes. What distinguishes Temperley London’s hobos, totes, clutches, and handbags are the just right amount of TASTEFUL metal bling trims and embellishments. Well done and missing from so many other accessory lines.

WHAT WE WANTED NOW:

The corset like, draped leather cincher, named the “Lalita Lotus Belt”…a knockout!

The Slimming Solution™ by SAG HARBOR® and BRIGGS NEW YORK®

Image of Fall Collection-Sag Harbor

April 3rd, 2009-Garment Center, NYC

Words, Images Judith Ecochard

Fashion with a capital “F” gets all the press and celeb hallelujahs, but the reality?

The average American women is a size 12-16…sizes most acclaimed Fashion Week designers wouldn’t dream of tailoring in---unless by special request and big bucks.

This is akin to subscription numbers of Vogue magazine –used to being the Bible of all things stylish…being bested by reality…that being that Red Book or Women’s Day reads out more, selling wise- than that impossibly chic glossy.

We have seen the latest advertisements by The Slimming Solution™, a collection of stylish, everyday office/casual separates aimed at the middle market.

When we got to the spacious light filled showroom in the Garment Center, we were treated to a wide assortment of Sag Harbor™ (Misses sizes) and Briggs Harbor New York, (for the growing 65 plus age)…collections, set to ship anywhere from July 2009 on.

THE SLIMMING SOLUTION ™ “Perfect All The Way Around”
Unlike Spanx®, The Slimming Solution™ separates have separate, state-of-the art supportive PowerNet Panels (sewn in strong lycra material/mesh liners) that firm up targeted areas (stomachs, hips, thighs)---but the garments do not compress a size down.

The line also incorporates The Hip Solution (pants, skirts) and The Knit Solution (tops, bottoms) a soft to the touch (really) fabric “enhances the bustline, trims the waistline and minimizes body bulges.”

Priced affordably (we saw a range from either side of MSRP $48)…the Fall colors are on trend, (basics, and autumnal colors) and the cuts of the tops and wear with anything black pants---flattering on all body types.

This is not va va voom attire…but clothes women can wear everyday with comfy confidence that they look slimmer!!!

SAG HARBOR:
We got a preview of Sag Harbor’s garments that are set for monthly shipments…a staggering phenomenon that shows how extensive this company, (owned by Kellwood) is.

We really like a deep cowl neck acrylic knit sweater (MSRP $48 - part of the Fashion Basics classics’ line). Available in different shades of ombre…we swear we saw the similar style sweater, albeit in luxe 2-ply Italian cashmere…in the New York, Madison Avenue windows of the high end Max Mara.
Also catching our eyes is a handsome black textured microfiber jacket, that mimics leather but is waterproof, breathable and naturally cruelty free.

Other trends Sag Harbor’s incorporates for Fall 2009 are plush wrapped ¾ sleeve long cardigans, tartan/tweed blazers and outerwear, and feminine takes on menswear like long sleeve shiny self tie blouses, sleeveless ruffle neck tops, and pencil style skirts.

ACCESSORIES:
If nothing else, women always get the bag…and SAG HARBOR manages to come up with leather-like versions of solid and

mixed fabrics python, moc croc, burnished antiique 'leather' and cro-suede satchels, totes, clutches, and hobo bags with all the zipped inner pockets a modern women needs. (MSPRs $48).

CARELLE JEWELRY COLLECTION: BOLLYWOOD INSPIRED

APRIL 2nd, 2009

Words, Judith Ecochard,

WE skipped the Oscars’broadcast this year –we knew the flick Slumdog Millionaire was going to do a near clean sweep.

--But naturally, we did not miss the post show fashion roundup…as we like to see who rolled the dice and decided to embrace the less than obvious styles...like our First Lady, Michelle Obama.

Frieda Pinto, the glam/gorgeous star of the hit pic of that moment, was a camera and audience favorite. Credit her handlers or just her self---for fab tastes. And the Bollywood theme totally worked.

For us non-Red Carpet types, Carelle jewels offers affordable gems like the one this fascinating actress wore.

CARELLE:

Producing handcrafted, meticulous collections that are modern, classic or Indian inspired, Carelle is the luxe spawn of a private label brand---- conjuring up sheer magical baubles under lead designer Chana Regev.

FASHION FORMS®: THE ORIGINAL SHAPEWEAR COMPANY

LATEST STRAPLESS “WRAP BRA” REALLY STAYS PUT AND SUPPORTS

Words, Judith Ecochard, Most Images, Courtesy of Fashion Forms

We remember Julia Roberts' 2001 Oscar winning acceptance speech and the media frenzy that followed---for her performance in the flick “Erin Brockovich” for many reasons.

Playing a feisty twice divorced single mom turned activist attired in risqué wardrobe with an enhanced cleavage and minis, the actress went 180 degrees the other way that Red Carpet night ---and was all elegant glamour in her vintage black and white Valentino gown.

On the daytime talk show circuit however, Roberts jokingly remarked how “it took a village to get that cleavage...” (and that Oscar look, no doubt) ---crediting silicon “chicken cutlets” for that extra oomp

So there we were, at a Garment Center locale reviewing the extensive collection of curve enhancing bras and innovative gizmos that are either/or supportive, provide coverage, and/or shape our boobs via adhesives, silicone or gel pads, and ingenious, size adjustable freestanding wonders that are straight out of an engineers’ handbook…courtesy of one company, Fashion Forms®.

Frankly, we were staggered. And we so got what the REAL Red Carpet staple was/is for many actresses.

BACKSTORY:

Ventura based Fashion Forms® was founded by entrepreneur Ann Deal-in the late 80’s, gradually morphing into an industry leading intimates company soon after the “Original Water Push Up Bra” (as worn by the fab Heidi Klum) hit it big in 1997.

Currently, Deal “owns and holds the license for more patented items than any other single entrepreneur” in this biz. Some of those breast enhancing/coverage free standing and traditional winners, patented or otherwise- include the first reusable “BREAST PETALS,

and the best selling “Nu Bra®” and “Nu Bra® Ultralite™” that are silicone-- and soft foam cups, respectively--- with inner adhesives and a clear front clasp---that help one defy gravity invisibly---and are ideal for “…strapless, backless, halter and formal fashions.”

WHAT”S NEW:
Two years of brainstorming has resulted in the “world’s first WRAP BRA-” (patent pending) that got our eyeballs all ga-ga when we saw a sample.

It is obvious to us why it works as billed, meaning “it won’t fall off or fall down.” There’s an adjustable Velcro Side Closure on both sides…that is hidden, super thin and lies flat---but miraculously holds it all up.

Adjustable for just the right amount of support/cleavage---this soon to be intimate staple (and we predict a huge seller, retailing for $32)-is available in Black or Nude in sizes 34-38, B, C, and D.

Coincidentally, TV commentator Melissa Rivers (Joan River’s daughter—the brunette nice one) always cited her worst Red Carpet moment as experiencing a strapless bra migratory slide down to her waist. She’s a spokes-gal for Fashion Forms® and must have put in the word for what’s missing on the market.

PLUS: Rivers and Hollywood stylist Sam Saboura have partnered with Fashion Forms® to create the "Red Carpet Ready Kit."

OTHER DESIRABLES:
The Peel and Stick “TRIANGLE CUPS” are ideal for sensitive skin types who don’t want adhesive anything on their skin---the sticky stuff is on the other side (in reverse) and adheres to clothes. The coverage is perfecto for halter tops and bathing suits. (Retail $19.99 in cup sizes A/B, B/C, C/D in Nude)

The "CAMI TOO™" that "turns your everyday bra into a sexy camisole." Idiot proof meaning we got it (YEAH!) is a lacy bandeau like item with tiny plastic hooks to attach to bra straps.

We like how we can wear it under a blazer---and all the ladies (of various shapes and sizes)--- at our dentist's office (our next appointment) gave it a big TWO THUMBS UP. ($18.00--in White, Black)

ADDED PLUS:
“For someone who isn’t savvy…” Ha Ha---like us, there are before and after pictures on the packaging of the products. So potential wearers get it.

AND the product line is so extensive…”there is not only one option” for whatever a woman needs “…a lift, some shaping, and a little bit of support.”

AND items can be combined…ie. the silicone gel “Enhancers” (Nude or Sheer) that adjust to one’s body paired with “U-Plunge Bra” (Black, Dark Nude, Light Nude) that sports convertible straps…and duh, has a deep plunging construction that lifts and shapes via padded cups.

RETAIL: Widely available at over 9000 retail outlets including Neiman’s, Victoria Secrets, Saks, Macy’s, Belk’s, Dillards, Bloomies and BARE NECESSITIES.
